MILK ALLERGY OR WHAT ? PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP.

Little Harry is 5 wks old ans been diagnosed with silent reflux, on Gaviscon and Renitidine also put 5 ml gripe water into his bottle, apart from crying most of the day he is gaining weight and looks well, but does not settle at all.

In the first place my health visitor suggested that perhaps the milk was not suited and he may be allergic to milk, we dismissed this because he was not sick and gaining weight, but we did change the milk from SMA gold to Aptamel for hungry babies then to easily digestible, hes now on Cow and Gate First, but still wont settle, have reduced the amount from 5 oz to 4 oz and feeding every 3 hrs trying not to overload him, but at the end of our tether, we cant think what else to do for him and its so worrying,

Have read about this Neocate but don't really want to change his milk again unless he is allergic.
Has anyone else had a baby who is gaining weight and not sick who's allergic??

Sorry to keep asking questions but we dont know what else to do to help him.

I demanded a lactos intolorence test when my daughter did the same thing she was about the same age,,, it came back negative. As horrible as it is to have to deal with some times with Reflux it happens. There may be nothing you can do. Its horrible to hear them scream and cry inpain, i would always be in tears. Keep strong things do inprove. Ask for that test though its worth finding out.

We did the test and it came back negative, but already started him on Lactose intolerant milk ourselves, what a diference in a child slleps all night now getting him to sleep in the day as well, we cut out the Renitidine and Gripe water in each feed, but still has the gaviscon and also Donperidone, Dr says that he has a floppy windpipe and still makes funny noises at times but really a changed baby now.
So any other mothers out there hang in there cos it does get better, and tanks to everyone who gave us advice ...

Forgot to say that our GP will not prescribe the milk so have to pay for it ourselves.

Glad to here things have improved,, How lucky r u having a baby that will let you sleep. This is one thing we still dont have the privalige of. She will sleep from around 9pm till half 12am ish them wake moaning for a drink (not milk wont touch any thing containing it). After a drink she will settle for ten mns, my be half hour (if we r lucky) she tosses turns and moans like shes uncomfortable until 2.30am then falls fast asleep till i wake her for breakfast around 7.30am... Im at aloss as to why. What a crappy doctor, they should prescribe any thing that may help refluxers, i guess hes never had a ill child.

Hi there, I'm Saras mum-in-law, oh your not getting much sleep are you, they spent quite a bit of time at my house because it was terrible at first untill we took him up to childrens hospital, but with the meds and how Sara looked after him he is greatly improved.
We rose the cot mattress up as high as we could, reduced his feeds at first not to overload him, and Sara would hold him upright for a good half an hour.
Also wind him about 4 times during a feed, but try this milk think its SMA L.F. dearer than the other but really did him good, Sara also lays him on his front, it eases him like that, but she checks on him nearly every hour during the night, she is so good with him.
Now started controlled crying, laying him in cot and going back in after 1 min, then 2 and so on till you reach 10 mins, then you start again. He only went about 2 or 3 mins, But it only took about 3 days and now he goes straight to sleep when he s put in there.
Seems hard I know, but as long as there not in pain it wont hurt them and most of it is temper because they've gotton used to being handled.
I do hope life improves for you, know what we went through with Harry, Drs are pleased with his progress but hes got a floppy windpipe as well and might go back to having the reflux pain but were keeping our fingers crossed.
No our Drs at home arn't up to much.,when first took him to A and E they thought I was fed up cos he kept cying !!
Good luck ...Linda
