LittleRefluxers

Hi!I'm sheri-a 25 year old mum living in South Africa.I am a stay-at-home mum to a beautiful baby boy,Blake.Blake is 5 months old.I breast fed for 2 weeks and wheni realised i did not have enough milk,i was advised by a gp to put blake onto S26 Gold.He was fine until about4-6wks when he started with a runny nose and some vommitting but nothing serious. We then changed him to the more popular formula,NAN.He started possetting worse. Then tried soya as my hubby had a milk allergy.Duing this time the paed had suggested MOtilium but it had no effect.I then heard via mums of babes who had had reflux about Losec MUPS.Started using the tablet which we had to dissolve and if blake did not take it all in it wasnt much elp. Then got hold of the liquid. It worked for a week or two then it came back....Same story over and over.Did an ultrasound which showed no probs regarding pyloric stenosis so paed said dont need to do a barium.Started om Novalac AR formula-good formula!Anyway,it got to a point where i was suggesting things other mums had used to the paed and then he would sy ok and prescribe it and my baby was convulsing in my arms.Eventually got an appt with another paed adn oh my word its been different.Straight away paed said these could be all the reasons for a baby throwing up so do a barium to ascertain if its pyloric or just reflux, allergy tests, urine test as urine infections can cause vommitting.Just reflux was the verdict.Prescribes motilium ans zantc. In a ratio(Zantac:motilium) according to weight-so at certain wieht the dosage increases.Blake has gone from 4.5kg at 10wks to 8.2kgs at 24wks!!!He stills possets but less than some 'normal' babies.Did start him on rice cereal and purity. However!!!Recently he was keeping bottles down AMAZINGLY and we though it was cleared. Then got gastro.Cleared up but cintinued to hane bile and numerous soft stools.Paed said gastro can cause slight lactose intolerance-which results in upset tum and bile. For 5 days did an anti-diarhoea formula and was great on it.Went back onto anti-reflux formula and it recurred. So at the mo tring a lactose free formula because paed said that the reflux may be righting itself but is being aggraveted by lactose intolerance.Tums better but as its not thicker like the AR formula it does come up a lil easier. So gonna give it a week or two and see if its much different.Maybe go back on the AR for a while and see for sure if its lavtose intolerance. He is a specialist paed who has successfully treated a number of babies. One baby was in ther and the mums stopped the meds because in a matter of months its cleared!GThe trick is to use the two meds together in this ratio!

I have visited this site so many times for info and insight.Thank you all or your comtributions-its such a support tool!Reflux is generally treated haphazardly here as well.Dont know why they are willing to let lil uns suffer. And the strain on mums-HELLO.maternal instinct yells when somethings wrong no matter how much you clever docs say its NORMAL:)))))

Well, its great to chat.Dunno if this helps you mums over there!

Keep strong:)

OOOOH,before i forget. This paed said no ways to losec MUPS.Its an adult med.He showed me a recent paediatric journal-newsletter thingy that said docs should be very cautious when prescribing ppi's-LOSEC-to infants for reflux as the long term effects are unknown!!!Did i mention its also bedtime here.K, hope thats everything now:)

Hello! I'm from SA too but living in the UK now! My son was on a lactose free formula after being on a thickened formula and it took him a while to get used to it but he eventually did so might be worth persevering as his reflux was 100% better on the lactose free milk. We had to move him to a hypoallergenic milk as the lactose free one was making him very constipated. Very interesting re the losec mups. He was prescribed these but after reading the side effects, I decided to stick to the Zantac/Ranitidine which he's still on. He's almost five months old and started on solids when he was 3 1/2 months old with baby rice/cereals and purees and he took to it very well.

Good luck to you and enjoy the SA summer lucky you :)
