LittleRefluxers

Hi guys, i think i'm just looking for a bit of support really. We have had a really desperately hard time with our second little boy..he's 8 months (we have a 3 yr old boy aswell) and has struggled in pain with silent reflux since 2 weeks old. he was two weeks early and slept for the first two weeks, but boy has he made up for it since! We have been through the whole palava of milks, he's currently on Aptimil comfort milk, he definitely doesnt respond well to normal stage 1 or 2 milks. We have had him tested for lactose intolerance 3 times....he isnt. We tried Gaviscon, ranitidine and now we are currently on domperidone. We practically begged the doctors to let us try omeprazole, but they refused to give it us until we have seen the peadiatricians yet again, but our appt for this is only 21st Nov, which feels like a lifetime away. During these 8 months we have even taken him to a&e twice as his symptoms have been so bad.  I have been diagnosed with alopecia as my hair is falling out and balding, and am taking setraline as i'm literally a nervous wreck! He isn't sick, but he screams and writhes around for the larger part of the day. he grunts and strains like he needs a poo, but he isnt constipated. he has runny acidic poos frequently. He always smells of acid sick, and has been gnawing at his fist in pain for months. Its sooo irritating when ppl say he's teething! what? for 8 months? and without one tooth yet! We suspect he has sandifers syndrome but when i mentioned this to the doc she didnt know what we was on about, its only through reading and watching online i heard of it. He arches his back up and throws his head side to side, which can look like he is having some sort of fit to others, and also hits hiself in the mouth when he's in pain at times. we keep video-ing when he does this to take with us to the paed, hopefully then they can tell. Sorry for the long post, just needed to let off steam i think. It truly has been the hardest 8 months and makes me feel so sad, cos we were looking forward to having a little brother for my son, and its just not been how we imagined at all. its awful to see my little baby in so much pain at times, i just wish we could get him sorted :(

Hi Sonya, I know that's its been a while since you added this post - I hope that things have improved recently. I really feel for you. I wanted to add a comment because it sounds like we have had similar experiences. I have a 3 year old girl who did not suffer from reflux and a son who is now 16 months; he still suffers from silent reflux! But please be reassured it does get easier, however we have found that there is definately no quick fix. We finally got to see the paed when our boy was 8 months old. The paed said that I should have come to him months ago!! (at which point I started crying because I had been asking for a referral since my baby was 2 months old!!) but it was a relief that someone was finally taking me seriously. We too, had 8 months of absolute hell - no sleep, self-doubt, arguments within the family etc, etc. The paed gave us Omeprazole (Losec Mups) and within 2 days our son ate his first tiny bowl of food (we had been trying to wean him for months!) He also started to sleep better. We still to this day have our bad days and weeks but I just wanted to give some advice; - trust your instincts - you know your baby best; if anyone offers help (grandparents etc) take it!, do whatever it takes to keep yourself sane and don't listen to people who try to make you feel like it's because you're a bad parent or it's all in your head..... I am an ex-teacher trained the early years and currently work as a child psychologist but still people thought they knew better! Good luck and let me know how it's going if you ever get to read this :)

Thank you Rachael. We actually had an appointment with the paed today and they have said we should stay on neocate and losec for another four months...( since this post we finally getting somewhere and after trial and error with a few different combinations of meds and dietary stuff, this is where we ended up seeing improvement) and touch wood, Jamie has been settled for the last four days! We have waited ten months to get to this point and to have had four days of settled, normal baby-ness is amazing! He has been on the meds and milk since before Christmas, but it's only now that we have had results, and he suddenly has started to common, he had struggled developmentally and I swear that it was cos he was in too much pain to do anything. We have finally managed to get himintohis own room this week and we are beginning to get him into a much awaited routine, as he has never been pain free enough in the day to sleep properly. This means we are getting a bit of a much needed break when he has his naps! I'm not going to fool myself into counting my chickens, I know that there will be plenty of ups and downs, but it's just so nice to have had a good few ups in a row :) does your little one still suffer with reflux? Thanks for your reply, it's good to chat with people who you can relate to x
