LittleRefluxers

Hiya all
I'm a first time mum to baby Chloe wo is four weekws old. At about two weeks old she started projectile vomiting, throwing up hours after feeds, arching her back and crying whilst feeding and screaming sometimes for an hour or so afterwards. I was terrified as I had no idea what was wrong then yesterday she was diagnosed with reflux, i'm so glad to have a diagnosis so i can research what might help, at the moment a dummy seems to soothe her for a couple of minutes, maybe she swallows the acid back down. I've been looking at wedge support pillows as she screams and throws up the minute she's put on her back. Has anyone tried them? Do they help? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hiya Katharine :)

I am second time mum to my three month old baby boy Thomas who started colicky symptoms at two weeks and has eventually developed into silent reflux being treated by omeprazole and neocate - started out on gaviscon which constipated completely within 24 hours, ranitidine which first worked and then stopped after a while along with domperidone which gave him really bad wind - suspect cramps etc too as he was so uncomfortable!

My daughter Cassie of three years and various intolerances we suspect suffered from same but she was breastfed for first nine months and finally put on nutramigen formula which transformed our lives - Thomas was on this after not tolerating cow and gate newborn but has still remained very unsettled hence the neocate.

I purchased bed blocks and use these in conjunction with a slightly thinner wedge and so far my little man is comfortable - I am hoping given time that I can reduce to just the bed blocks as think flat surface is best for their back and bodies.

I can also recommend you take a look at getting your little one seen by a qualified chiropractor who specialises in children (like the one I am so fortunate to have) or an osteopath - it helps to maintain a really healthy digestive system when their spine, diaphragm, and cranials (heads) are all regularly checked out and corrected as they can suffer from all sorts of stuff from being born etc - helped my ds accept being comforted by me last week for the first time in over six weeks which was really wonderful experience :)

Also, last but not least, a couple of very good books I have found recommended on here are 'The Sensational Baby Sleep Plan' by Alison Scott Wright which contains a great section on reflux and is well worth owning and 'Colic Solved' by Bryan Vartabedian MD which is very helpful and an eye opener full of pretty much everything you may need to know in relation to reflux - cheapest place I found them both was 'the book depository'...just google the books and you should find that way.

Finally, just know you are never alone and feel free to moan anytime - it helped me to get through the worst days sometimes instead of just collapsing under the weight of all the emotions...fear, sadness, anger, fustration, depression etc etc...lol :)

Daughter (now 19 months) diagnosed with silent reflux at 5 weeks old, given Infant Gaviscon and ranitadine, worked ok but then stopped, this was due to the weight to dose thing (hard to keep changing med dose all the time) put on to Gaviscon and Omeprazole, great stuff (antacid tablet), later had Domperidone, did cause tummy cramps and green poo for a couple of days but found out that was through not spacing doses correctly, once timeing was better Fab stuff. Helped my daughter loads ass she would stop breathing before she began this. lactose intolarence test done around 3 weeks old (negative) but dairy intolarent at 14 months and wheat/gluten intolarent at 16 months, LOTS better once on a free from diet.
They say dummies help with the refluxing and my daughter loves hers she holds one and sucks one. We used a wedge with side arm things to stop her slipping down it, and one when nappie changing (to be onist I NEVER let her lie flat at any time ever, I used pillows in the day and wedges for sleeping and nappies. Rolled up towels when I went out....
Its a hard thing to be faced with but the right medication, support and a good understanding of the illness you will get through it. xxx Good luck.
