Hi!

I'm a first time mum to baby Lucie who was born a week late in September. She is now nearly 7 weeks old. I noticed there was some problem when she was about 3 weeks old but was told, as most of you seem to have been, that she had bad wind and colic. So on the Infacol she went... A week later the HV watched me feed her and noticed she was still being sick (which made her cry) over an hour after her feed. She recommended we go to the GP.

I think we are lucky our GP is so sympathetic and after a couple of visits, and a week of trying Infant Gaviscon, she referred us to the consultant. Again we were lucky and saw a Dr whose child had suffered from reflux. She instantly saw how much pain Lucie was in and even tried to convince me how much it was hurting her! So she put her on the highest dose of Domperidone and Ranitidine that she could and has her on the waiting list for a stomach scan. So far so good....

But despite medication she has really bad days where she cries in pain, day and night, and you can hear the reflux happening even when you can't see it (and she cries every time!). She pulls off my breast because she's arching her back when I am trying to feed her and I don't know how she can be putting on weight when she hardly manages to eat. It feels very lonely and so hard to watch your friends whose babies feed quietly and calmly. You wonder what you did wrong.

It has really helped finding this website because I can see I'm not alone in my struggles to convince others of the existence of reflux and how distressing it can be for the whole family.

Hi Sarah,

Pls don't feel alone, i understand how u feel like all the people on this site! My son (71/2 months) started his pain when he was about 3 weeks old, i tried all the over the counter meds for colic, docs woiuld not help me nor would health vistors. At 51/2 months i had enough and took him to a private ped'tion, he was put on domperidome andzantac straight away (he has silent reflux). The Zantac worked for a few weeks then he went back to normal. He was then kept on the dom'dome but also given losec tablets. Since then i have seen an improvment. He had an app yes'day, doc thinks he may grow out of it when hes around 1yrs. I did not breast feed and feel so guilty, maybe i could ahve helped alike with the acid..who knows! Stay in touch.x

Hi,

My son is 6 months old and I am still breastfeeding most of the time. We had a rough time with breastfeeding initially and he started with minor reflux symptoms at about 8 weeks old. After Gaviscon nightly for 3 weeks things seemed to settle down to a "happy spitter" stage. Unfortunately at about 4 1/2 months he started screeaming in pain at the breast, pulling off and back arching a lot as well as other symptoms. Couldnt feed in public really as after about 3 weeks it was getting to be that every feed was a wrestling match and NOT in any way a bonding experience. I have been in tears at times as friends babies happily feed and smile contentedly afterwards. I would fight to feed him then he would vomit what seemed to be a whole feed up! Wondered what I was doing wrong/eating etc
Zantac initially was fantastic and stopped most of the arching but over the last 2 weeks the fussing/pulling away and crying has started again while feeding. I am about to start him on Omeprazole and Domperidone.

Curently I am feeding him from the breast 3-4 times a day, a bottle of expressed milk and sometimes one of formula.

He has been reluctant to eat solids ovr the last few days but did start trying some 2 weeks ago when the Zantac was working and he loved it then.

Have sympathy as I wondered how he could be putting on weight when he fed so little but I used up at least 1- 2 litres of frozen milk I had stored. I felt he couldnt be getting anything when feeding so badly.

4 weeks on Zantac- 2lb weight gain! 2 months for the same gain before.

Nicki- suspect if your little one's pain is so bad breastfeeding wouldnt have stopped the symptoms. I exclusively breastfed/EBM until 24 1/2 weeks.

Hi Rigel,

My son was quite bad last nite, problem burping and farting, eventally fell asleep, this morning he only had 4 floz of milk but then had his redbrek. Think its going to be a long day 2day!

Thanks for ur reasurrance re breat feeding, its amazing how us mums beat ourselves up about every little thing once our babies are born!x

Hi Nicki,
Hopethe day wasnt as bad as you thought!
Only recently realised farting was worse in refluxers I just thought he took after his Dad.
I am lucky he usually settles when he wakes in the night but still have to get out of bed to do it.After 10 + times it gets wearing. Have had 3 nights over last 2 weeks where he was inconsolable in the early hours even feeding didnt settle him.

Will be trying readybrek soon myself does your son like it?

Hey Nicki
I know exactly where you are coming from, our little girl has been suffering from very much not 'silent reflux' or at least she may have been silent in the beginning. She has had bad reflux pretty mch from birth and started projectile vomiting from a very young age. She still does but after months of going out of our minds (having to change her and clean the house dozens of times a day) we eventually saw a paediatrician at great ormond st. He prescribed domperidone (highest dose 4 x day) and omeprazole 4 x day. She still occasionally vomits but it is definitely far less regular than goodness. I guess the trick is not to stress, lots of babies suffer from reflux but they all get better in the end (the question is just when). we take a much more relaxed approach to it now but in the early days we were going out of our minds (and because of the vomiting her weight has always been quite low).

Hiya Nikki,

How old is ur little girl?? My son is 17.7 lbs and hes 71/2 months. Hes on 2.3mls of domp'done 3 times a day and 1 (10mg) omperrazole (losec tablet) a day. Mys son is vomiting a little now, i think thats better then silent reflux, thats horrible for babies and parents!

Hi Rigel,

My son was a really bad sleeper b4 we started his meds (51/2 months). After that he started to sleep through (7.30pm-7am). I found feeding him in the nite made him alot worse, in fact he wasn't hungry (i thought he was cos he was crying) he was just in pain bcos of the reflux.

I think hes having a bad time at the mo bcos hes teething and is agravating his reflux, will give him some calpol 2nite. I ahve noticed he is now vomiting alot more now, i can handle that, its better then him being in pain (silent reflux)
