Update on Liam - making progress

Hi there,

Just thought I would let you know how Liam is getting on in the last month.Three weeks ago he had his cleft palate repaired at Great Ormond Street and he's now been off all his painkillers for over a week. The other good news is it looks as though he is growing out of his reflux - he hasn't been sick for around six weeks and is enjoying his solids and slurping his milk from his Doidy cup. He was nine months old yesterday.

It's been a very difficult journey to get… Continue

Hi
I note in your reply to my question about gavison you mention a Speech and Language (and feeding) specialist. What do they do and did it help? Thanks

Hi there, basically they will just look at your child eating and what they/you do and offer some advice. I guess every child is different - Liam also has a cleft palate so this is why we were originally seeing the Speech and language specialist.

Liam has a bottle aversion so we've also been given some kind of advice by nurses/the speech and lang specialist on this - not that it has really helped. I think at the end of the day we see our babies every day so we know more about ther behaviour and what helps than anyone else. They said to try swaddling which he wasn't keen on - but we do try to cuddle him in and hold his little hand - which stops him constantly pushing the bottle away,

Hi Rebecca
You say in one of my discussion sthat Liam is now improving on his solids - was there any particular way of feeding him that you have found to work , any particular spoons that were better than others etc??! Does he eat a lot of his solids now?

Hi
Thanks for your messages.
How old is Liam? I am not sure when to try Fraya on things like carrot sticks etc as she gags on purees so I am not sure that she will cope with anything else!
Fraya is also on high calorie milk. How do you structure your feeds (milk and solids) if you don't mind me asking and how much will he eat/drink at each feed (roughly).
Thanks

Hi Rebecca
Thanks for your timetable. How much solids does Liam eat (ie how many ounces of milk mixed in with his solids)? I only do 1 ounce of milk with each meal but Fraya will not manage to eat all of that amount. This morning she only had about 4 spoonfuls of porridge mixed with her milk.
Fraya has SMA High Calorie which she seems to like and actually pulls the bottle to her mouth which she has never done before! Beofre this I was using Dr Brown bottles until she started hating the sight of them! What bottles do you use? Do you think a change of bottle might make Liam drink more? When I changed bottle Fraya suddenly drank a lot better and now has 3/4 ounces in 5 mins when before she was having 1-2 ounces and sometimes it took an hour! Hope to hear more from you soon!

Hi

What is Duocal high energy powder? Not heard of that. How come it is needed to be added to high energy milk?
How has Liam been lately?
Fraya's bottle feeding is going really well - she is having about 20 ounces a day now! Hope this continues!

Hi Rebecca,

Glad to hear things are a bit better with Liam. I really hope the op goes alright and it helps his eating/drinking. Poor thing - not nice to have an op at his age. We send you all our best wishes for that!
I really feel at the end of my tether at the moment. I'm just so depressed by it all. Stella seems to deterioate rather than improve. She got quite a bit better when I stopped the domperidone at 7 months and we had three weeks of eating (small amounts and very fussy), but eating and drinking without too much screaming. Then 10 days ago she got ill, had a temperature and vomited for two days, and since then she has been screaming and screaming through every feed and now she won't eat a thing. She is refusing outright to even look at the spoon. Went to the hospital yesterday and they said that they would do tests if I wanted but thought I should still wait to see if she gets better over the next two months. They are not worried about her losing weight as she now wavers around the ninth percentile. They say it's only a major problem if she comes off the chart altogether. I am just at a loss now ... I have remade an appointment with Dr Thomson at the Portland (made one before which I had to cancel as my toddler was ill). I suppose I want to know what is normal for a reflux baby. Will they just not eat until they stand up etc. I keep hoping certain milestones will bring some improvement, I find it soul destroying that weaning and age haven't helped us like other people.

Sorry, I'm moaning on ... it's hard to be positive in this situation!

Hi Rebecca,
How are you and Liam after his op? Hope it went well for you both.
Seems like we are headed the way of a speech and language therapist as my Liam seems to have developed/ is developing an aversion to feeding. I think you've mentioned this before when responding to one of my discussions- what exactly happens in it - is it just a consultation or do they get 'hands on'? Your reply to my discussion seems to have cut out some of what you were saying - can you let me know any advice you were given that actually helped. I have heard about the swaddling, but Liam doesn't really respond to this.
Thanks!

Hi Rebecca
I have just read your long message on Marmum's page - very useful advice!
I hope Liam is feeling a bit better now.

Hi
Glad that Liam is feeling a little better & is liking his solids.
Fraya still ahtes her solids and mostly clamps her mouth shut. She still likes her milk and will have about 20-23 ounces a day which I worked out to be equal to about 30 ounces of normal calorie formula. I am getting her weighed on Friday when I see the paed. What is Liam's weight?
