Why we get prescribed Omeprazole tablets for babies

I took Joe to the GPs yesterday to refill his Omeprazole prescription as the hospital hadn't given me enough to last until my next appointment due to me doubling the dose.

The GP asked me if I was using the suspension form. "No", says I, "All the pharmacies say it doesn't exist"

I'm pretty sure lots of other people have been told that aswell.

Anyway there on his screen are 3 types of Omeprazole, suspension, dissolvable tablets and normal tablets that barely… Continue

Things are looking better (i will probably regret saying that though!)

So Joe's meds didn't seem to be doing any good, infact he was getting worse and screamed almost constantly for 4 days after seeing specialist.

I doubled the dose of his tablets on Saturday as I couldn't wait any longer and he seems to be settling down. Yesterday wasn't too bad and last night he slept from 11pm to 5am - the longest yet! He has also slept most of today - I think he was completely exhausted and it's all caught up with him...let's see how tonight goes.

My Reflux Story

I have 2 daughters aged 11 and 2. They were both model babies. I really didn't appreciate how lucky I was having them. I thought that No 3 would be just the same.....boy was I wrong.

On 29 August 2007, little Joe was born 5 weeks early. Not only was I not prepared for his early delivery by emergency cs but I was definitley not prepared for the problems that came with him.

After about 3 weeks Joe started to cry in pain, often when feeding and his stools changed from yellow… Continue

Thanks lisa
Had a better night again, we had a few hours of being awake but 'happy awake'! still doing ok on the fig rice, although tried banana custard with the meds- although the taste was good it went rather runny with the meds- back to the rice today!
I'd be really interested to see how you Joe gets on with the hypoallergenic milk, as although i've alaways been told that rohan has no intolerances it's always in the back of my mind- it would explain alot of the symptoms.
Hope you're having a good day and good luck when joe's back at the hospital

Hi Lisa
Just wondering how you and Joe are getting on.
I really hope you're feeling a bit better and your baby is in less discomfort and pain.
Is he getting progressivley used taking the medication?
How are your 2 daughters coping with the situation?
We had our first proper family outing yesterday and I was shocked at how stressed I felt.
I found myself freaking out at feeding time. I started to worry about how people would react, what they'd think if Alexandra started screaming.
My hands were shaking as I was making her bottle and I could feel my heart racing when I started to feed her. Fortunately she was OK.
The funny anecdote happened when we asked one of the waitresses to warm up her vegetable puree. It was such a tiny amount that she looked at my husband and said: Is it really worth it? What she couldn't understand was that to our standards that was a whole proper meal! It's funny how this condition colours your perception of life and you end up accepting that your baby won't manage more than 3 or 4 oz of her formula or what other people consider to be a ridiculously small amount of solids.
Buy, hey, she finished her puree and boy was I over the moon.
The whole experience made me realise that I'm still a long way from recovering of my anxiety, but I definately feel a bit better. Three months
ago I would have never tried to feed my daughter in public, out of the security of my own home. So I will try and look at it as a small victory for me and my family.

Let me know how you are.
Take care

Hi Lisa
How are you and Joe doing?
Did you see get to see your GP?
I was glad to read your last blog, learning that things seem to be getting better. I hope he's continued to sleep for longer at night, sleep deprivation makes things so much more difficult- as if looking after our little refluxers wasn't hard enough!
Hope you're well.

Hi! I am the proud mother of a toddler, (age 3 years) and more recently in November 2007 of twins at 3 weeks prem. Apart from being exceptionally hard work I am at the end of my tether managing my baby boy (Alex) reflux. When the twins came out of SCBU we were told "Alex has a bit of reflux". And thought well I'm sure it won't be too bad. What a nightmare and it just seems to be getting worse. To top it all Alex is gaining weight so therefore no-one really wants to know. On a waiting list jof 18 weeks just to get into the baby clinic at the hospital and if we are "lucky" will then go onto waiting list for the gastro specialist. Alex is on 2 sachets of gaviscon per feed and Ranitidene every 2nd feed. Neither of these seem to do anything! Today was a very bad day. 3 cot changes, 5 outfits for Alex and 2 for me! Coupled with a very wet carpet and about 10 muslins. Poor Alex screams before a feed, during a feed and for at least an hour after a feed. Very distresssing to watch and listen to.
As for my little girl twin - no problems. Text book feeder and sleeper - thank goodness - dont think I could cope with two! Alex is 14lbs now and is 15 weeks and I am wondering if I should start weaning him?? Would that help?? Have changed the milk to SMA hungry baby milk but he still is hungry. Tomorrow I am taking Alex to a Cranial Osteopath which I have heard may help. Basically I will now try anything! Has anyone tried this? How did you get on??
Please Please has anyone got any advice. Today felt like going out and not coming back. Dreading feeding times and feeling soooo guilty about not spending anytime with my toddler or twin girl and spend the whole time comforting Alex or mopping up puke, or washing clothes!

Any words of comfort or advice would be great. Thank you!

Hi Lisa

Good to hear your GP was so understanding. Hope you'll begin to feel better soon.

I haven't done any more trips out. Although lat one was relatively successful, I ended up exhausted because I didn't manage to relax at all and was on edge all along. I felt more panicky than I had done for ages and that seems to have triggered feelings of anxiety again. I'm hoping to see my CPN today, see if I can regain some control.
As for the colic calm, I haven't used it but I know it's an homeopathic remedy for some conditions, including colic and reflux. You can find more information on the website www.coliccalm.com.
I don't really know about slippery elm but I think Kay and Francesca could give you some info on it as they're both using it on their babies.
It sounds like Joe is doing a bit better, that is fantastic.

Gotta go. My little monster is awake.

Hi Lisa

Just a quick line to ask how you and Joe are doing.
My little one seems to be theething at the moment- or so I'm hoping- so her reflux is worse than usual.
Hope you're well.

Hi Lisa

So glad to hear Joe is doing better, hopefully he's on the right medication now and he continues to make good progress.
Alexandra is still unsettled and my anxiety is back with a vengeance. I saw my CPN yesterday who had some suggestions and mentioned the possibility of increasing my medication. She wasn't surprised about the effect that the family outing had had on me, as I had been living in a comfort zone, avoiding all the situations that could potentially trigger my anxiety.
She also said that Alexandra's relapses are bound to affect how I feel.
So let's hope both me and my little one get through this rough patch soon.

Keep in touch,
Helena X
