How come the meds are so low chuck, may be they need ajusting, my daughter at that age was on 20mg Omeprazole a day, 3.5ml domperidone three times a day, and liquid Gaviscon advanced 2.5ml 4 times a day. And if at night she was uncomfortable i would…

Up all night again.......

HELP!!! My LO is 6 months old and on 1.9ml omeprazole once a day, 2.3ml domperidone three times a day, 1ml ranitidine three times a day and gaviscon in every bottle. Last night he cried and seemed in pain all night, arching his back and then curling in to a ball, he sobbed 'real' tears and nothing I could do seemed to help, he has been like this again for a couple of weeks, initially the omeprazole appeared to be working but now we are back to square one. What next?????

Hi Helen Yes, this is the disappointing side of the reflux meds, it takes a while for them to work properly, but somehow the waiting doesn't feel as hard going when you know you've been taken seriously. I remember how tough it was weaning…

My son was diagnosed with silent reflux when he was 6 weeks, he is now 5 months and we still have nothing really undercontrol. He was put on Gaviscon, which was a nightmare to give as I was breastfeeding him totally then, then he was put on domperidone, which the dosage has been changed on twice, still he screams and refluxes. Now they think he may be dairy intolerant so I am on a dairy free diet and he is on Nutramigen for the 2/3 bottles a day he now has. He still screams and cries, some days it feels like all the time you can physically see him reflux all though he is only sometimes sick, we have tried so much, raising his cot, keeping him upright and still after feeding and on really bad days I carry him around in a sling. We have no real set routine and he just appears to be in so much pain all the time, we now have a consultant appointment on Tuesday I so hope they have got an idea what else we can do.

Hi Helen
So sorry to hear you and your son are having such a hard time. Hopefully your appointment on tuesday will be productive and things will improve very soon.
In terms of medication, there's a lot they can do. I can see your son is not on any medication to reduce the production of acid in the stomach, which is what causes the pain when it goes up the food pipe. Some drs tend to prescribe Ranitidine first and if this doesn't work then it's Omeprazole which seems to be a much more effective drug for reflux, hopefully you'll leave the consultant's office with a prescription of this in your hand.
Your son sounds pretty much like my daughter when she was around that age, in her case omeprazole was the thing that really made a difference to her pain and improved her quality of life.
I guess what I want to say is that it does get better, it WILL get better.
Please let us know how the appointment goes.

I remember how tough it was weaning Alex off the breast, bless her. Which bottles are you using? We tried sooo many until we were advised to try the Dr Brown ones and they worked wonders for us. Alex seemed to reflux less on them and also because the milk flows out she didn't have to work so hard and less sucking effort resulted in less air intake.
Hope things continue to improve :-)
