Thanks for this, very interesting although such a shame that you are having to go through all this, babies and toddlers are hard enough without living with conditions which seem impossible to get diagnosed. I will just keep an eye on Lauren over…

Catherine, I read somewhere on the site that your little boy had a thirst problem, I am intrigued to know how much he drinks? My daughter is 2 this weekend and she drinks (and eats) non stop. Everyone always comments on how much she drinks though,…

Ok, 4 weeks makes sense! As far as the barium goes, they will probably flavour the drink for Toby so it will be more palatable for him. I recommend you put him in old clothes (incl shoes!) as the drink seems to go everywhere!!! (or maybe that was…

A Year on.......

I have just read a post I put on this site a year ago, what I would love to say is how life has improved, unfortunately that is not the case. In fact we are due to see Dr Shah at GOSH this month, I am hoping for a miracle. My son is almost 4yrs and he still suffers with reflux. Unbelievable to think what he has gone through. He is still on Omeprezole, still sleeps with a wedge, still has to keep still just after food, still has to use a baby cup when drinking to control the flow. He controls… Continue

Life with a Refluxer!

My son, Sam is 2 1/2 and was diagnosed with reflux at 11 days old at A&E. We spent the next 12 months wishing every day away as we wanted him to grow out of it, be out of pain & stop screaming! We had mixed help & advice from the Health Professionals but most of the time it was trial & error. My biggest mistake was obsessively feeding him so he just about maintaned his weight, all the Dr's care about is the weight! The vomiting took over our lives, sometimes we knew he would…

Hi Helen

Thanks for the comments, managing to eat the green and blacks okay, and found a small choice of dairy free foods at tesco, some better than others. It was interesting to hear about the lactase in drugs, you never think of that, will be checking a few more labels. I was a label checking geek before all this, now I am going to be worse, I am sure the staff in Tesco must talk about me. I am going to stick with despite what the DR said today as I will try anything to help Anna, they really don't understand and play the whole thing down and leave you feeling like some stupid over anxious woman. I am gaining strength now and am finding my tongue again, I cannot believe how much all this has knocked my confidence, but I am a fighter and will not rest until my daughter is treated with the respect that she deserves. I wonder now about my son, as he had a rash the whole time he was breastfed, never vomitted though, and still has the odd bit of eczema now and then here and there and has not touched a drop of milk in a glass since he stopped breastfeeding and he wont eat cheese. I am maybe thinking that he has a mild intolerance as he will eat yoghurts, and has a litttle milk in his cereal and of course he manages chocolate but he never gets a lot. I don't know I did mention it to the Dr but she just shrugged. Thinking of going private stuff the savings its my kids. Speak soon Gillian

Hi Giliian,
Thanks for your reply. Certainly interesting about the dairy issues, my son, Sam has to be completely dairy free and you would not believe how many things contain milk powder! Its a nightmare! By the way, a Paediatrician told us that Gaviscon does not work on breast fed babies!! We have had 2 years of conflicting advice and medical OPINION not FACT! Going private does not improve the level of expertise or understanding you get either! Some things that were successful for us though were, the cot wedge (he still has it now), Dr Browns bottles, sitting upright & not being held whilst feeding. This was the hardest thing - I breast fed Sam for 12 weeks and it was a nightmare, he fought me and arched his back & screamed EVERY feed. Once on the bottle, we would put him in his bouncy chair and feed him upright. The baby carrier saved my sanity - again it kept him upright. Once he was 3 months we gave him his daytime naps in the buggy upright - he continued this till he was 18 months! Another thing that seemed to help the discomfort was Fennel tea! (You can get baby version! Hipps I think) We also kept him on new born bottle teats till he was 10 months as he couldn't cope with a faster flow. All of this was trial & error but you may find just one of these ideas helps.
All the best. Helen

Hi

my son archie is now 9 months old and he is finally gaining weight which i am so pleased about however everything has to be pureed he cant have any lumps what so ever and i really want to start progressing with the lumpy food but as soon as he eats it he throws up. We are back at the hospital in a couple of weeks but after joining this web site i have learnt so much about reflux. How was Sam with solid food was it a slow process or do i have wait until he finally grows out of the reflux? many thanks Debs

Hi Debs, I have just read your story so I can try to understand fully about Archie.
It may or may not be reflux related that he can't take lumps just now (I am also a Nursery Nurse & I have experienced this problem with non-refluxers too). Sam's reflux did get worse during this period but we were made to believe it was because he was crawling and not being kept upright enough after food. We were advised to put him in front of the TV (still in high chair) to keep him still for as long as we could after eating. (Bit of a challenge!) However, if you have weight issues then don't be too hasty with the lumps, just try to get the food inside him, thats the most important thing. You also don't want him to start being frightened of food. Having a reflux baby means you go against many of the "norms" as a parent but its a case of survival! We also found a walker to be very helpful at this stage - Sam was more comfortable upright. Once he was walking (11 months) this problem with lumpy foods and extra meal time sickness improved. I can't promise Archie will follow this pattern but hang in there. Is Archie on dairy free? Maybe for the next couple of wks before your hosp appoint just write a food (and sickness) diary just incase you or the Paed can see a pattern. Does he have much pain? Can't believe you don't have any medication. Let me know how you get on. All the best. Helen

Hi Helen, hope things are going okay, not been on line for a few days xmas etc keeps you busy. Anna is doing really well now, settling well in the evenings, and is a much happier baby. She has been on her meds now for almost 4 weeks losec and domperidone, although I for get a dose of domperidone usually once a day. Dairy free continues, survivied all the xmas food with no dairy, getting quite used to it now. I was wondering if you had ever come across bad nappy rash on any of the meds, Anna has a real sore bum and my usual creams etc are not working, have changed nappy brands, never used wipes anyway and it is still really red and angry, don't know if there is any connection or not. No sign of any teeth either. Have also started weaning just rice once a day, seems to be ok so far, going to take it really slow though as she only five months but I am getting exhausted with the feeding, desparate for a full nights sleep!! Take care Gillian

Hi Gillian, glad you all survived Christmas, so did we!
Glad Anna is more settled now, I assume this is the medication kicking in? Sorry to hear about the nappy rash, is she having a lot of dirty nappies? Sam did not have Losec so I am unsure of its side effects. Sam had a lot of dirty nappies (due to his dairy problems) but I don't think it was connected to reflux. Obviously this in turn caused nappy rash.We got a cream from the Dr in the end which I only used when bad. I can only advise to see your GP (Nightmare I know!!) but hopefully you can get cream then it'll become more comfortable for her. What milk are you using to mix with baby rice? Are you expressing or have you added in formula? Could this be a problem? Hope you are soon able to get more rest.
We had some test results back yesterday, Sam had a PH study done over a 19 hr period (a probe was inserted into his stomach and attached to a computer to assess his reflux & acidity. ) He actually undertook this whilst on medication but it seems he still refluxed 43 times during the assessment. The Dr said he would have refluxed at least 100 times if he had not been on meds! Thing is we took him off meds 2 weeks ago as we figured 2 1/2 yrs was long enough. Now I feel bad especially as they recommend he moves onto stronger meds. Not sure what to do now! We see the Paed on Jan 8th!
Happy new yr Gillian, lets hope things look brighter in 2008!

Hello, can anyone tell me if their child has had a bad reaction to Omeprezole? Sam has been on Ranitidine for 2 1/2 yrs and following a PH probe test he has now been put on 10mg Omeprezole. He has not been sleeping, been in constant discomfort and still been sick. Anyone else experienced this? Helen

Hi Helen

Thanks for the support. I will let you know how we get on at the hospital tomorrow. Really grateful to Archie's mummy for telling me about the site at a children's birthday party yesterday. Finally feel I am no longer fighting this on my own.

Hi Helen, Hope Sam is happier on Ranitidine, Freya hated the stuff! Yes I do get some support with Freya, my Mum helps out as much as she can, but shes quite elderly and is scarred stiff of Freya being ill when she is left with her, so when things are really bad she has my 4 year old son for me so I can give all my attention to Freya, she will babysit for short periods but never an evening so our social life is no more, I would never trust anyone one else to baby sit, because when she vomits........she really vomits and its not fair to put someone through that!! However she has just started to go to a day nursery, as I have recently gone back to work she goes for 1 1/2 days per week and although I have phone calls everytime she vomits she loves it and the nursery are good with her (helps the owner is my nextdoor neighbour).

I didn't see any pics but hopefully we will when we have our follow up. Hope things selttle down with Sam.
