I am so glad I have found this website, I no longer feel like I am going mad. My son Christopher who will be 2 in January has never vomitted in his life and has been at the Dr's once about a year ago. However I feel that I have never been out of my surgery with Anna, who is now 17 weeks and was finally diagnosed with reflux a week ago!! I had been saying since she was 3 weeks old that there was something wrong, my health visitor and GP kept saying oh this is all normal, if she had been my first I may have believed them. Anna had every sign and symptom of reflux except weight loss, and that was what they commented on all the time, and ignored the fact that she had every other sign and symptom. I by this stage could not think straight due to being post-natal and exhausted by lack of sleep, rest and having a "fussy" feeder on the breast. At 5 weeks she was started gaviscon which constipated her further, although my health visitor did not feel she was constipated, that it was perfectly normal for a breast fed baby to only go twice a week, I think otherwise. I was made to feel that I was doing something terrible giving her drugs at such a young age so I stopped them after two weeks, I feel that it didn't really help anyway. I took her to an osteopath at 7 weeks for 3 sessions and that appeared to help and by 10 weeks she was doing well, only screaming for about an hour or two and sleeping better during the day and at night. I thought foolishly that that was the end of it as I had been given no information otherwise, then at 14 weeks it all started to get very bad again and I started to panic. Anna was screaming till midnight, my poor wee girl and my poor wee boy, he gets very upset when she is distressed too. My husband had to take time off work, I had been coping on my own for most of it as he works away from home. A GP at the practise diagnosed ME with post natal depression, one day when I was in the surgery on my knees with exhaustion barely able to speak let alone protest at the diagnosis he has never met me before, duely gave me a prescription which I hasten to add is in the bin. I finally after much pestering and perseverance have been listened to, it took three visits in one week to the GP, NHS 24 call, out of hours GP call and a visit to casualty!!!!! Anna has been started on Losec and Domperidone, which has reduced the screaming to one hour in the evening and she has a cons appt next week at sick chicks. Hallelujah! I have also gone on a dairy free diet, not that easy and I feel I am craving what I can't have, diet otherwise good (missing chocolate the most does anyone know of a good dairy free variety?). I feel so guilty and annoyed that I did not listen to myself and my gut instincts, however I now feel I have the strength to get this reflux sorted and to get back my happy giggly wee girl. I am amazed that for such a common problem that the health care advice is so limited and so stuck in the "colic" dark ages. Thanks to this website and the links I have purchased a wedge at a reasonable cost and have some nice "bibs" for Anna to wear with her party frocks at Christmas. I can't shut up now that I have got started, it has been great to rant and get this all off my chest. Speak to you soon, Gillian

hi gillian, when i read your story it sounds like the exact same my son didn't lose weight either except he put it on really well but that doesn't mean he still suffers from reflux i'm afraid that with the drugs my doctor told me it's trial and error to get the right dossage his individual case needs. plus it took about 2 weeks for aaron to start settling down with them but like everything else if your not happy then go back to your doctor and don't feel like a nuscience because no-one else knows your baby best other than you.aaron still has days where he is either cranky or he will be sick and i'm afraid those days will come and go for me anyways but when he turned over on too his little tummy for the first time and he had that great big smile on his face trust me then those other frustrating moments that comes with reflux will melt away. But always remember that every kid is diffrent and that diffrent doses work with diffrent kids.

I think Isabelle is calmer after seeing the osteopath, only had 2 sessions, got another tomorrow evening. It is so hard to know what is working and what is not, and she is never consistant, so some things that help her work one day and not the next. Keeping her really busy throughout the day seems to working well, but im finding it hard taking her out all the time, i get even less done around the house... She is only happy in really noisy places with lots of people and objects to look at, not happy just staying at home playing with mummy and all her toys, she just screams and screams... But if it means she sleeps right through at her sleep times in her bed all by herself, then im happy to take her anywhere. Just wish it wasnt so cold and wet...

Hi Gillian, just wanted to let you know that I started a dairy free diet about 5 weeks ago and it made a huge difference to Lauren. It took a good two weeks to take effect and during that 2 weeks the screaming and general unsettledness got a whole lot worse, so hang in there if things don't seem to be improving - I was told it would take 2-4 weeks and bang on 2 weeks she was a different baby. Thats not to say the reflux has gone - I can still here her milk going up and down again and today she has hardly drunk anything and is on off my boob and just not interested.

Suzanne A on this site gave me a few pointers - although now wish she hadn't cause I can't stop eating chocolate bourbon biscuits!! Waitrose sell quite a few dairy free cakes and biscuits as do a lot of supermarkets I think.

I am taking calcium tablets and have an appointment to see a dietician for long term advice. I tried to give my daughter some formula for the first time last week and i gave her 2 oz 3 nights in a row and she just reverted back to her old self, so will have to try another formula when I have the courage too!

Take care

Hi Gillian, I am new to this website but I wanted to mention a few things to you. Firstly, a nice (ish) dairy free chocolate is Green & Blacks dark chocolate! I read your story with interest and sadness, why is it that parents of reflux babies are treated as problems themselves? I could write pages about my experiences with my 2 yr old son but I want to help you with a few pointers. Firstly I assume you are on a dairy free diet because you have been told that it helps reflux babies - there certainly is strong evidence to support this, however are you aware that domperidone has lactose in it? ( so do many other drugs) My son has just had an endoscopy and we have discovered that he is has no lactase enzyme, therefore he is unable to tolerate any lactose at all. This is pretty rare so I'm not suggesting that Anna has this problem but a degree of lactose intolerance can be connected to reflux.
I am sorry things have been so tough for you and I hope Anna starts to improve, you have done the right thing by listening to your instincts and getting the medical proffession to listen to you. I wish this web site was around when Sam was born, I used to walk the streets with a screaming baby thinking I was going mad!! Needless to say, I didn't go mad and we all still take one day at a time! All the best. Helen

hi gillian

i live in liberton so not too far away from you! ryan is 7 weeks old it all started when he was 2 weeks old he seemed in pain when having his bottle and i had no idea why i never had this with my older son. it was my health visitor who mentioned relfux and one night it was so bad we had to take him to the royal and we were given gaviscon which worked for about 2 weeks and once again he became very squirmy and seemed in pain. my gp was totally useless and said he wouldnt give me anything else for ryan as he was putting on weight even though i told him my little 4 week old son was in pain! my health visitor couldnt believe this and told me to take him to the sick chicks. so now he's on the gaviscon and losec but i just dont know if its working he's been on it since just before christmas and it has made a difference but for the past few days he's started squirming again so i'll see how he goes and will probably take him back. thats great that anna is much better there's nothing worse than seeing your child in pain. sorry to have gone on so much its good to hear from someone who knows what this is like!!

take care

Hi Gillian

Thanks for the support. I went to a birthday party yesterday with my 3 year old daughter and met Archie's mummy and she told me about little refluxers. It has really helped to read other parents experiences and realise you are not alone.

Hi Gillian,

Thanks for the advice. I have in fact cut out oranges, cause one evening after a day Leila was much better I had a few oranges and she had a terrible night of vomiting and screaming to follow. It is just amazing how sensitive their little systems are. I am now off gluten and I find that is definitely helping somewhat. Wish I could stop the medication. Did Anna's reflux get any better with age? I'm hoping they do get stronger and vomit less as time goes by. . .
