Hi there,
we live in waltham abbey which believe it or not is classed as Essex.
Our little ben was diagnosed with Reflux after a trip to A & E las friday and has been on his meds since then. He has improved but seems to be on occasions going back down again. Hate seing him like this!!

I completely sympathise, our little one was 8 weeks prem and was diagnosed with silent reflux 2 weeks later. He's now 5 weeks old, on Ranitidine and Domperidone, neither of which seem to have made a difference and we feel utterly useless whenever he eats. He looks to be in so much pain, for up to an hour afterwards. There doesn't seem to be a magical cure and doctors don't seem to take the condition very seriously. Think we're stuck with this for some months to come - I'm told they grow out of it?!

Hi. My baby was born 6 weeks early and was in special care for 2 weeks. When he left hospital he was put onto Infant Gaviscon and Domperidone neither of which did anything as far as I could see. He is now 10 weeks and the GP says he has colic and he is on Cow and Gate Colic food. Having read info on this website, it sounds like he has reflux as he can't sleep on his back and is in so much pain. The only place he can sleep is lying on me (which isn't practical!!!). Has anyone experienced this? He's not on medication now as was taken off it to have treatment for colic (Colief) but I'm confused as to what is wrong with him now!!! 1st baby and not a lot of sleep recently as he is in so much pain :(

I completely sympathise my daughter has a similar story, domperidone is a drug for sickness so that would only help vomiting and gaviscon rarely helps. The weakest drug for reflux is ranitidine then omeprazole then lanzoprazole. If i were in ur situation I would keep going back to the doctor, its what I had to do. you dont say exactly what your babys symptoms are but most reflux babys can't lay flat so try raising the cot mattress at a slight angle n lying baby on its side or I know its not recommended but until my daughter was treated I would get her to sleep lying on my chest then transfer her into the Moses basket still on her front. It's not ideal but it worked for me for a few weeks, u get more sleep and just end up waking often to check they are still breathing! Hope this helps

Hi Emma, yes I would agree with Charlotte. There are varying degrees of medication and the doctors will start off with Domperidone and things have to get pretty bad before they'll consider omeprazole or lanzoprazole.

However, we have had trouble with GP's before, in contrast to the paediatricians at the special care unit. GP's aren't too familiar with reflux and can often confuse this with colic. Taking you off the Domperidone may have made things far worse. It surprises me they did this without referring back to the paediatrician in the first instance - especially considering the prematurity aspect.

Domperidone has to be increased with baby's weight and if you've not had a recent increase, your LO's symptoms may seem worse as the meds aren't as effective with the increased weight. Symptoms often mimic colic. We found the slightest increase in Domperidone made every difference - even just 0.2ml or so.

I would certainly recommend that you return to the GP and ask to be referred back to the paediatrician at the hospital. I know you'll probably feel really cheeky about doing this or even a little embarassed, I did. But I found the courage and asked....it worked, with a little pushing. If you've got a 6 month check with the hospital, you could approach it by asking the GP to arrange it be brought forward due to these problems?

Hope this helps.

There is light at the end of the tunnel - my LO is now coming up to 7 months, is still on the Domperidone and Ranitidine (for the acid reflux) and is soooo much better. You'd hardly know he had it. We only have to increase the meds now once he's put on a few pounds, rather than a few oz's!

He slept on his tummy for most of his first few weeks/months as it was far more comfortable for him. We invested in an angel mat for peace of mind. We then bought the 30 degree wedge from little refluxers and its worked a treat. A little awkward at first, but you get used to it and it means that baby can go down after 20 minutes rather than an hour or two!x

Hi. Thanks for all the advice and its a help knowing we are not alone!!! After a weekend of hell with Isaak screaming and in so much pain, I took him to the GP. She agreed he does not have colic and has changed his feed again. He is back on Gaviscon and not on Domperidone which fingers crossed at the moment seems a little better although he is still regurgitating and screaming for no obvious reason. I followed ur advice and got him to sleep on my chest and then transferred him to the moses basket on his tummy. He is SO much more settled like this although I'm paranoid something awful will happen but I prefer waking to check he is breathing, more than listening to him screaming without being able to do anything to help him!LO is now 3 months and it seems to have improved as long as I follow the same routine regarding feeding and then settling him. Will look into getting an angel mat.
Thanks again for all your help. Really made me feel better and your tips helps my LO. x x
