LittleRefluxers

My son, Oskar (4 weeks old), was diagnosed with reflux earlier this week. He has (mostly) silent reflux, that is, he does not vomit frequently, but he screams constantly and seems to be in pain. This means that he does not sleep very much and neither do I, for instance, in the last 24 hours he has only slept 5 hours solidly. I also think that he wakes up from excessive wind. I was wondering if anyone has had similar experience of reflux and wind going hand in hand. I also try to burp him for at least 30 min after every feed and am only very rarely successful. Is it not more likely that a baby with reflux burps/ vomits easily?

Any advice would be gratfully received.

Hi Amber
I have a 7 week old baby girl who I think has silent reflux too. My son (who is nearly 4 now) had reflux as a baby, where he would be sick after every feed, and was prescribed infant gaviscon. Now my baby girl seems to be very irritable when feeding (bottle) will drink 2oz then get very irritable. She spits the bottle out then either falls asleep, then i try to wake her for the rest of the bottle, and she finds it hard to feed. The most she will drink is 5oz, and she doesn't have the symptoms with every feed, although She is difficult to wind, has frequent hiccups and coughs. I was going to go to the chemist to see if I can get infant gaviscon to see if this relieves her pain as this worked for my son.
I would suggest you take your son to the GP to see if he thinks it is silent reflux. Is it your first child?

Hi Lou

I am so grateful to hear from another mom with the same problems! Oskar is my first child and I feel like all I have done in the last week is fed him, dealt with him crying and cried myself. We have been to the GP who immediately referred us to a paed who diagnosed silent reflux and prescribed moitilium which apparently works to empty the stomach quicker. We have been using this for about a week but it has not been working. In fact I think he has got worse. He now sleeps only for an 1 - 1.5 hours at a time, wakes up screaming but stops once he passed explosive farts (sorry I could not think of a polite way to describe it). During feeds he does arch his back, pull off from the breast suddenly and coughs loads and sounds like he is about to be sick. I do think he has reflux but I think he may have bad gas in conjunction with reflux. I have not seen gas being one of the symptoms of reflux, which is why I think Oskar has wind in addition to reflux. Did either of your children have bad wind.

Thanks so much

Amber
Hi Amber
Really sorry to hear your are having a tough time. Since I last posted a reply I have spoken to a friend who is a GP (as its easter and surgery is shut), and she confirmed that she def has reflux and to give her infant gaviscon. So we have and she has been SO much happier! She is now taking 5oz bottles and not hitting that 2oz barrier and not wanting to feed. She is fairly windy too and does lots of farts! she still has a few probs bringing up wind, but gripe water helps or also a friend recommended fennel boiled up and give 2.5 ml.
The first day of giving gaviscon, she slept that night from 9pm to 3.45am!
I would go back to your GP and get gaviscon prescribed, esp as the other stuff isn't working. I am going to spk to my GP and get it on prescription when she goes for her 8 week injections next week (dreading that!)
I hope this helps, let me know how you get on....

Hi Amber,
My son (also my first) is now 11 weeks old and has finally been diagnosed with silent reflux (my Mid wife, HV and 2 GP's told me I just had a windy baby). He has dreadful wind and we also spend at least 30 mins after each feed trying to wind him.
The feed is usuallly miserable with him crying on and off throughout and then usually about 30 mins later he tends to start straining and appears in real pain until he manages to fart (what else can we call it?!!). That can go on for ages.
Gaviscon and Ranitidine made no difference. The paed we saw last week prescribed Domperidone to move the digestive system quicker and Losec MUPS. It is nearly a week since he started taking the drugs, which is a real misery to force him to take, but I can see little improvement.
Fortunately he is not a screamer but I managed only 3 hours sleep last night because he was fidgeting, straining and farting most of the night. It must be related to the reflux.
I'm desperate to find something to help relieve him, it is getting worse.
I have also tried reflexology, acupuncture and cranial sacral osteopath.
Any advice from experienced mums gratefully received.
Shelley
