LittleRefluxers

hi all,

havent posted for a while but could do with some advice, oliver is 17 months and on 15mg lansoprazole he was switched to this at 8 mnths old when he was diagnosed as having a hiatus hernia. previous to this we tried every other med and prescription milk with little improvment.. this drug seems to of been the turning point for him and since then he has greatly improved, although his weight gain is still slw he is happy! his gi specialist has been reviewing him every 3 months and at last visit was happy to wait 6 mnths till nxt appointment, so january.. he said studies show babies with hiatus hernia suffer less as the get older but he has little experience of this himself as they are quite rare in babies. i just cant see this as i know how adults who have this suffer, my dad has one, my brother and my auntie all are medicated and suffer daily with certain foods etc

they have said if he is still suffering when he reaches 2 they will lok into other options but dont like to operate.

last night we had an awful awful night, it was like going bk in time to when he was little he woke up screaming, nothing would console him he was arching his back, throwing himself on the floor for over half an hour this happened throughout the night, i could hear him gulping and choking like he used to do when really bad, every few seconds he was swallowing something bk down i felt so helpless all over again.

the question is what do i do? push for more tests?? whilst this isnt happening everyday i still feel he shouldnt have to suffer this.

Hi Kate

Sorry to hear Oliver is having a rough time of it. It's not nice and just not fair for the poor little guy. I would try your consultant again. I have a family history of this too and gp has laughed at me suggested could my kids have this. My dd is 23 months and has recently started to projectile vomit again and my 4 mth ds is suffering too with reflux and wind. I'm going to the dairy free route as breastfeeding by he's still not happy. Hope you get some answers and some help for Oliver

Hi Emma,

thanks for your reply, i dont seem to get any replies anywhere when asking for advice with the hiatus hernia, maybe because not many little ones are found to have one!

sorry to hear you have two that are suffering, i think its ridiculous that we get fobbed off and laughed at, the amount of doctors and hv who used the colic card with me was unreal but i knew all along there was something wrong. we asked for the barium swallow and the paed was happy to do it for 'our peace of mind' because he was sure it would show nothing.. how wrong was he!!

Hi Kate

Not nice for Oliver but I love proving the drs wrong. When I saw the consultant last week with my son he said he sounded bored rather than having reflux. I nearly punched him. As his mum I know something is wrong, reflux and or cmpi but getting them to listen is so hard. He prescribed omperazole, but such a low dose, even below recommended minimum, but I made it up to the minimum amount and the next day I had a different baby. That showed him! But and there's always s but, I font think his dosage is enough as it seems to wear off by early evening.

What are plovers symptoms with his hernia? Are they they same as reflux? My dad, sister and brother have hiatus hernias as does mum in law. I'm curious to know how it affects babies/toddlers. My daughter, just 23 months, has all of a sudden practically stopped eating and has started to projectile vomit again after 18 months of not even showing signs of reflux. She's still on gaviscon and never needed any thing else but then again o never knew they existed and put up with hr sleeping with mr for comfort and being a poor eater and wanting to be held for most of the time.

Have you decided what you will do?
Hi Emma,

He said he seemed bored!! OMG thats such an insult... i can remember one paed saying to us that maybe oliver cried after solids because he didnt like the texture arghh i wanted to punch him too lol

how much omeprazole is he having?

his symptoms were basically that of really severe silent reflux, the main difference i noticed was while they all said he would improve with weaning he got worse, that and i just had a hunch there was something more...he would happily eat the food but then immediately scream in discomfort. he can only eat small amounts of food , right up untill he was 15 months he had only ever been able to take 4 ounces max at one time.. i dont know if this is because he learn more was uncomfortable??
even now his med stops the burning so he rarely screams like he used to but i can hear him refluxing all the time, even when he drinks i can hear it glunking about in his chest as it refluxs back up.
when we had the barium swallow it showed just as he was swallowing it was all refluxing back up!

my paed said it is more than likely heriditary especially as my half brother was born with his, can you ask for them to be tested? could you maybe go private?

well he seems to be over his little flare up so i will leave it for now, but if it happens again i will def get onto them and ask to be seen.

Hi Kate

I'm glad Oliver is a little better. Wish I could say the same for my 2 :0(

Ryan was only prescribed 4.2mg for his weight of 6.92kg which I know is far to low. Gp upped it today to 7.5 but said I could give 10 if I found it easier as on mups.

I mentioned a hernia ages ago to the gp and she nearly laughed. Reading olivers symptoms I don't think mine have that but some of it fits with Hannah in that she barely eats anything, especially lately. But waiting for pead app for her. I just can't believe that the pead I saw for Ryan discharged him and said gp should manage his omperazole. I don't know maybe just a crap pead.

I'm going to try and get some sleep. Not sure I'll be able to as Ryan been so sicky today I'm worried he'll choke in his sleep.
hi emma,

how r u doing? how are hannah and ryan today? oliver has a good night last night but awful the night before quite a few times today he has suddenly started choking on whatever he is refluxing :(

when oliver was on the omeprazole we used to give 5 in morning and 5 at night rather than all at once, i found this lasted him better

i think its ridiculous that he was discharged, can you ask for another referal say nothing seems to be working and you want another opinion, a paed would be able to prescribe lansoprazole which is what worked wonders for oliver

Hi Kate

Glad to hear Oliver had a better night. Poor little chap for today though :0(
Do you find certain things set of the choking or just good days and bad days?

Hannah is much better but still won't eat only her milk. I guess at least she's having something but I'm wasting a lot of food. I do hope this referral comes thru soon.

Ryan is a bit better. He seems more happier between feeds and he's not screaming so much during after feeds but he still seems very uncomfortable and in pain especially in the evening. He's let me put him down a little today so that's an improvement but he's still frantically rubbing his eyes after a feed, sicking up various quanties after a feed and constantly has fingers in mouth until all of the wind is out. I can't understand why he's do windy. I've been dairy free for over a week now? I did try the nutragien milk but he wouldn't take it. I dint blame him either as it smelt gross. Hannah asked to try it and even she wouldn't touch it. So I guess it's back to dairy free eating for me.
I would say he's definately better on 10mg but whether it's enough is another question. I also give it in two doses.

Gp said they'd refer him back if 10mg or milk didn't help. Seeing her on Monday for review so we'll see then. I can't believe he's not under the care of a pead.

How is lansoprazole different to omep? Gp did mention that to me when gaviscon wasn't helping Ryan but she called pead who said to try ranitidine first.
hey Emma,

had another night form hell with oliver last night, his reflux was so bad and i can actually feel it coming up his chest when im holding him, does that make sense?
i dont know why this has suddenly flared as he has been doing so well..

i dont think anything flares it up particuarly? just good and bad days, but like hannah he is really not eating anything all he wants is milk.

oliver used to constantly rub his eyes, they would be red and watering and he was always sneezing when his reflux was bad as a baby, he hated the nutramigen at first and i nearly was sick when i tried it lol but believe it or not you get used to it.. he did and even i could tolerate it as i used to sometines try a bit if the teat got blocked etc...

lansoprazole is just a different type that does the same job, paed says some work better than others on different people
Hi Kate

Sorry to hear you two had a bad night. Poor little guy :0(

I've had not such a good day again. Same story as yesterday really but Ryan seemed to be worse tonight.  He doesn't cry so much it's more groaning with eye rubbing, fingers down throat and loads of silva. Oh and a rick hard belly from wind I just can't shift.  I called the gp again today but the two Drs I normally see were both off so I thought I'd leave it till I have an app Monday. I just can't pit my finger on it with Ryan? I'm not sure if it is reflux? I guess it is but hrs not crying all of the time. He's been sicky today but not massive amounts. Had a few splats on the floor bur I'm not sure what is normal.  I just feel like I'm going mad, and wondering if I'm imagining it all. Had my sister to stay today and she said he's worse and does seem uncomfortable and in pain at times but she don't know what's normal either.

Stupid Drs making us feel like we have to justify our babies health!

Hope you have a better night x
