LittleRefluxers

Hi my lo has suffered from reflux and milk intolerance from birth, i weaned him at 14 weeks to try and help him with the sickness. I must say it has been hard going as most foods seem to effect him. He can't tollerate any fruit (apart from a small amount of pear), onion, cauliflower and sweetcorn. He is also soya intolerant and suspected gluten intolerant! I make everything myself as most jars have apple in them as a preservative plus they tend to be too thin for him. I have to thicken his milk with baby rice to keep it down. I was just wandering what everyone elses baby's eat that doesn't effect them, i am running out of ideas of what to give him, he is only 7 months and i feel like i'm feeding him the same all the time. Plus he starting to need snacks between meals and all i can think to offer him is rice cakes!

Hi,
I can sympathise with you!!! My son who is now 18months is intolerant to gluten, dairy, soya and egg and seems to also have issues with a few fruits and vegetables....it has been lots of fun with food!!! I have only just started to reintroduce gluten last week, and then if that goes ok will start trying to reintroduce the others!!! anyway...i make all of his food as well, and generally he has tended to have lots of different casseroles which I have put either chicken, beef or lamb in, along with potatoes, sweet potatoes and a variety of different vegetables that I know he can tolerate (found out over a long period of time by trial and error!!!) I have also tried haddock and cod which he seems to be able to manage. Due to his reflux he has been unable to tolerate any lumps until the past month or so, therefore I always had to puree everything up really smooth. I found the Heinz baby stock really useful for the casseroles (I get it in my local big sainsburys or boots), and I now find it useful to mix with meat / bolognese to thin it out a bit and soften it so that he can chew it as he is getting used to the lumps!!! finger food wise between meals, I have used the organix crisp things (there are different kinds...carrot wotsit things, sweetcorn rings and tomato ring things!!!)...they dissolve in the mouth really easily. Banana is also easy to give between meals (although my son seems to get constipated with it, so we only give a tiny bit at a time). Soft nectarine seems a favourite at the moment, as does soft pear. (although that is not very helpful if your son can't tolerate fruit!!) And rice cakes are also good. I too felt (and still feel!!!) like I was always giving the same food....and I suppose due to the intolerances there was less variety than there would otherwise have been.....but, we are under a dietitian who has been really supportive and I have found it really beneficial as it has set my mind at ease that he is getting all the nutrients / vitamins he needs. She also gave us a recipe book of things to make with nutramigen (the hypoallergenic milk my son is on), which has been useful, and she has given us lots of information about substitutes for different foods to try in recipes, and some new ideas that I would never have considered. Are you under a dietitian??? My health visitor referred us. We were also under a consultant but have now been discharged. I still take introducing any new food really slowly, but it has got easier...touch wood!!!!
Hope this might be helpful. Good luck!!!
Jo
Hi Jo yeah he is under a dietition but haven't seen her since we found he can't take gluten, his next appointment is August but might phone and see if she can bring that forward. Might try beef this week just to give him a different flavour. I am lucky that he takes lumps no problem and would eat anything you give him, just suffers later. I gave him a chicken cassorole yesterday that had apricot in it as hadn't tried that and he was sick all day and up all night uncomfortable!! He is still unsettled today which puts you off trying new things! My lo is on neocate and i too worry he is getting the right vitamins etc. especially cause he can't eat fruit.
Hi Sam, I know.....it is really difficult when you try something new as the effects can last for days before they wear off if they dont tolerate it. I always kept the casseroles pretty basic.....chicken, potatoes, sweet potato, courgette, broccoli, carrots and baby stock.......and then when I tried a new veg I would try a tiny amount amount separately so that if there was a reaction it wasnt as severe as if he had eaten lots of it, and I would try it over 3 days minimum to check there was no latent response, and then if that was ok would then add it to stuff. It is so time consuming though.....and quite stressful....especially when you know certain things are fine, you don't want to upset the balance as you know the nights (and days) are likely to be so bad if they don't tolerate it!!! That must be really difficult as well if he can't take fruit. Definitely give the dietitian a ring....you may be able to get some advice over the phone even if she can't fit you in sooner. I believe there are supplements that they can advise to take if required (not sure at what stage though!!!)....or if you don't need them, at least she can put your mind at ease!!! She also may be able to send you out some stuff....I went to the supermarket looking for such different things to normal after our dietitian had given me the list of all the substitutes....took quite a while reading all the labels, but found pasta that doesnt contain gluten or soya (I didnt know that existed!!!), custard powder that I could use with nutramigen, etc. Good luck!!!
Jo
