LittleRefluxers

Hi all, I hope everyone is doing ok.  As you may know Jasmine has improved dramatically and is med free for last 4 weeks.  I started weaning her at 6 months with complete purees and stage 1 jars/ellas kitchen pouches.  She has a good appetite but I have started trying to move onto stage 2 but she doesn't take it very well, is gagging on it and spitting it out.  I'm not sure if she has an aversion to lumps or she is just being fussy as she will eat finger foods fine (organix stix, banana, sweet pot etc).  the HV has told me to just start putting whatever i'm eating in front of her and let her pick it but i'm a bit hesitant due to her not getting enough and also what do I put in front of her as I don't home cook every day. What do you think I should do.  Are all your lo's on stage 2 food from 7 months as i'm feeling quite pressured.  Just a bit confused and I don't want to start making her hate eating as she is just started feeling well and enjoying her food.  Any suggestions greatly received xx

Hi Emma

My dd was the same when I weaned her. She was fine on finger foods but would not touch lumps till 12 months. Pead said it could be from reflux but said she'd do it in her own time. Just keep trying and your lo will eventually. I used to get stage 2 jars and blend them up a bit so it was semi lumpy or make pasty sauce with mince and blend it so nearly smooth and gradually she took bigger lumps. But it did take time and even now at 22 months I'm finding her still a vert fussy eater but she will now eat unblended mince.

Good luck x
hiya hun

i am so happy that Jasmine is so much better and that things are on the up for you.

have you considered following Baby Led Weaning? I started weaning my Louiza at 6 months following BLW (she never had purees) and just put in front of her what we were eating. To start with she just played with the food but she now eats and chews it really well. She has 3 bottles of milk per day (one early morning, one mid afternoon and one at bedtime) so the rest of the day she fills up on lots of food she feeds to herself. Her poo has really changed and there is less food on the floor and her tray so she is obviously eating it due to her milk intake decreasing.

For once i have to agree with a HV! Good luck!
Hi Christine, thanks :-)
I've thought about baby led weaning but am a bit confused. Jasmine on dairy free diet at moment but dietician has said I could try and introduce it but i'm too scared at moment in case I upset the balance and spark off reflux again. So I can't really give her what I eat. I think what i'll attempt is at tea time she has veg and fruit purees so instead i'll boil up some veg and cut it into finger food and lay it on tray and see??? I think i'm just over anxious cos don't want to do upset her but I suppose I can stop treating her like a ticking bomb lol! It's amazing isn't it, a HV giving sound advice :-) xx
Hi Emma, thanks for reply :-) I get a bit confused, went to see HV and first she said introduce breakfast first rather than milk, then try dairy then try lumps aaarrrgghh, just scared i'll do something to tip her back over edge. Theres so much emphasise on speech problems now but my mum said one of my brothers ate purees until 12 months and spoke fine but other bro ate lumps and needed speech therapy so who blooming knows?!?! Yeah i'm getting a bit stressed about it and Jasmine sat in her high chair excited about eating and then I shove lumps in her mouth and she goes right off eating. I think she's going to be able to wrap me round her little finger :-) xx
Oh yes that definitely happens. Hannah knows just how to play me. But not sure about the speech thing. Hannah at 23 months talks so clearly and is probably advance as a 4 year old and she's still a terrible eater.  One thing I've learnt and it's the only advice my pead gave me is she'll do it when she's ready and stop worrying about timescales and development. If we stress then they do and it's so true as I'm a mega stresshead.  Just keep trying now and again but the main thing is for her to be eating. I went to another mums house when Hannah was just over 1 and her baby was a month older than Hannah and she wasn't a refluxer and she was still eating smooth purees. Your lo wil do it soon.  Oh and breakfast thing hv is right. Hannah used to eat breakfast so well but I made the mistake one day of letting her have her milk before and now she won't eat breakfast anymore and I end up letting her have a snack before lunch..
My Lo still has his milk 1st then breakfast. He always has had to have his milk before his food or he'd never drink any milk! (& I mean none!) They're all different tho & his dietician also said when weaning give food then finish off with milk. But as she also said it was still important for him to have min 20oz which he couldn't achieve before adding in food I had to just go with what suited my bubs, so do what feels right & what suits your Lo. He's now supposed to have 16oz -more achievable I thought til she said in just 2 bottles breakfast & bedtime! Oh well...at least he can eat cheese & yoghurt. Another positive for breastfeeding as they can't get you obsessed with milk intake or lack of!! xx
Oh dear :-( For tea yesterday I gave Jasmine some veg puree which she really enjoyed then I thought would try a small piece of banana, she took then chewed a little, tried to swallow it gagged, then it seemed to get stuck and she choked. She then projectile vomited the whole of her veg puree all over the place and really struggled to breath. Do I continue, it scared the hell out of me :-( p.s. I gave her oaty porridge this am with 61% whole milk, only 4 teaspoons :-/ but we'll see what happensx
Oh Em! That's horrible when that happens isn't it!! Did you offer more puree after & would she take it? Maybe try with something else- I've found banana fine with both my boys & only thing I'd allow my eldest to eat in car as worried about choking, but later my Mum told me she'd heard it the worst fruit for causing choking as it can get stuck! So maybe try melon or soft pear? Well done for trying porridge- hope she doesn't react! xx
I know it was horrible poor love, she was enjoying it so much. I managed to give her a little more puree after but only about 4 tsp. She settled ok overnight tho so couldn't have been too hungry. Yes it is quite a "sticky" fruit, will go for a more watery type and she loves taste of pear. Oh I don't know, the other thing is now she has all 8 front teeth she won't suck on the food but bites it off i.e baby cookies and organix stix so bit of a worry. I bought a pile of veg yesterday - b. squash, sweet pot, parsnip and carrot. Not sure whether to just puree it up now. My mum keeps saying don't worry about it. She is saying da da and has just started clicking her tongue today and she'll eat lumps eventually. I need something to worry about though don't I ;-) xx
I wouldn't worry too much as she's only 8mths isn't she, but think you should persist with soft or dissolvable finger foods. It's nice for her to be in control of some of her food & to be independant esp as she was enjoying it so much! I'd do cubes of soft veggies (like you bought) if I were you for her to feed herself as you can always mash them with a fork if needed. I remember offering cubes of food & then mashing some of them to spoon feed in between so he didn't get too rustrated if hungry. Also he could see it was same thing as at 1st he looked at the food & picked it up but didn't take to his mouth like he didn't realise it was food! That's fab she's saying Dada & making tongue noises...see nothing to worry about!...though I'd keep trying before she gets lazy or twists you round her little finger- kids can be very powerful through food & I know I'm more of a softie around Ben & eating than with eldest (who's trying it on with food recently after previously eaten anything & everything!) then wonder if I'm giving him a snacky-picky habit?! xx
Yeah she's just 8 months, sounds like a good plan. Maybe I won't fill her up with purees before I give her finger food and offer her that first so if she gags she doesn't bring everything up. Well last night was terrible. Jasmine was up 5 times in night and I got about 3 hours sleep. I don't know if it's teeth or the dairy I gave her but she was settled all day and then screamed whilst drinking her last bottle like the teat had caught sore gum but ???? The gum around her canine is definately bulging so i'm not sure if it's coincidence. She had a poo this am and it was slightly runnier than normal but again this could be teeth. Think I will leave for couple days and then try again. If same thing happens I know xx
How's it going? Was it the milk she reacted to do you think? xx
