Hi girls

I'm sorry I've been awol for a while.....we've been very busy with the babies but I need to ask for some advice about weaning!  The babies are now 24wks (5.5mths) old and are being weaned but things are not quite right.  They're very unsettled in the evenings and won't go to bed at their usual time of 7pm.  They were initially sleeping better through the night when we started weaning (the poor things were starving), but now they're playing hell at bedtime and just won't settle (it's unheard of as they usually can't get to 7pm without falling asleep)!  I ALWAYS planned to do baby led weaning and introduce new foods every 4 days but somehow I haven't done this (probably coz life has been so difficult that I thought pre packaged purees would make life easier...pffft)!  I just don't have the time to do the research I would normally do so I'm just looking for a few pointers with what to give them in these early weaning days.  And some advice on what I've done so far (I know I didn't go about it all in the best way....none of this was quite what I planned)!

The boys have been having Ella's Kitchen Pears with their Omeprazole since 12wks of age.  This wasn't weaning...just flavouring the meds.  When they were well past 17wks I increased the amount of pear so they were having 2-3 spoonfulls.  I didn't give them anything else until they were almost 22wks...night time wakings were becoming horrendous and the babies were obviously hungry so I tried them with some Organix Sweet Potato and Carrot puree.  The first night, Ché was screaming in his usual reflux way...but we thought nothing of it as it was nothing out of the ordinary.  Anyway, we tried again the next day and he screamed for 4hrs solid so we realised the weaning wasn't suiting him (I probably gave him too much too).  So, we knocked it on the head for a week and tried again with Ella's Kitchen pouches.  We bought a mix of 'Brocolli, Pears & Peas', 'Sweet Potato, Brocolli & Carrots', and 'Banana, Apricots & Baby Rice'.  We've alternated these foods over the past week or so and for breakfast on some days I've given Plum (brand) oats mixed with water and a bit of Ellas Pears to flavour it (they don't like it with Neocate) and on other days they've had the Ellas Banana, Apricots and Baby Rice.  They were obviously starving before now because they slept really well for a few nights.....but now it's all gone bums up!!  I'm not sure if it's something they're eating or if it's just a coincidence.  Things can change so quickly with these boys that I never know what exactly is upsetting them.  I'm not certain if it's weaning related or just an upset to their routine.  I know to avoid apples.  I know that baby rice doesn't always agree with CMPI babies but I didn't see any reaction when I first gave it.  To be honest, I don't know what's a reaction and what's just behaviour anymore!!

Sorry for long post...wanted to give some background!

I would go back to just 1 meal a day pref the lunchtime one as it gives you some time to look for a reaction before bed and also they can be a bit to tired on the eve one. I don't know what type of routine you use but when Dylan was that age he used to do

7am - 4oz
9- am Nap
9.39/10.00 - 3oz
12.00 - lunch of puree etc
12.30 - bottle 3oz then nap
3.30 - bottle 5- 7oz
6.00- bath
7.00 - bottle 8oz

Now at 8 months his routine is

7am - bottle 7oz
8.30 - breakfast (if he wants it)
9.00/9.30 - nap
10.00/10.30 -snack
12.00- lunch - finger food (plus stage 2 puree if will take!)
12.39/1.00 - nap
3.30 - bottle 5-7oz
5.30 - dinner (same as above)
6.00 - bath
7.00/7.30 - bottle 8oz

I don't know if that info helps at all but the gina ford weaning book is really good as is the Annabel one someone else mentioned.  Also Dylan loved swede at same age, hated parsnip though!

Thanks Charlene...this is really helpful.  And yes, you're all right about going back to 1 meal a day, an early one, and taking things very slowly.  That's the plan now.

The first routine you give is very similar to ours but we can't get the boys to take a bigger feed in the evenings - all of their feeds are 3-4oz and they don't want them as often as before.  We also really struggle at around 5pm as they want sleep!  We were following Gina F loosely but there is nothing in her book to help with when your babies don't do as she dictates!  When the boys wake at night they want milk and won't go back to sleep until they have it.  Water doesn't work (the paed advised us against this too), and neither does a cuddle as Gina suggests.  And she says about giving a big feed at 10pm to get them through the night but they'll only take 2-3oz...somtimes 4oz if we're lucky.  They're wide awake at 5-6am ish but don't want milk then as they've had the odd ounce through the night.  They play about with the bottle half heartedly at 7am then by 8am they want to go back to sleep.  Ginas book makes total sense when you read it but putting it into practice has been a nightmare.  Did you have any problems getting your baby to conform to her regimented routines?

Rylee loves parsip its on the same level as carrot and pear Swede is the same just done some to start tomorrow with it

Rylee is only weaning as she was eating my sisters Xmas dinner without my sister knowing stole a pig on a blanket parsnip and sprouts

I have got purrees in the. Freezer I just take one out the night before

Blw you can still go on to do it I done it with my son he was weaned at 4 mths and at 6 mths I started doing finger food lunch within 2 weeks he wouldnt let me feed him anything not even how bottles
I found annabel karmels new complete toddler and baby meal planner book really useful at first. Explains about first foods, how long things can be frozen for, also has a like timetable of when to give foods.  I'm not sure if you might be able to view a lot of the book on the annabel karmel website. I started with puréed fruit and veg at 17 weeks and then at 7 months started lumper foods and then at 7.5 months Finley refused to be spoon fed anymore so I started doing baby led weaning  he is now 8 months and absolutely loving feeding himself and making a mess. Really developed his eatiing skills and also helped with his development with picking things up and touching bits. I'd definitely recommend tryin BLW when your twins get a bit older xx
A combination approach of blw and puree is a good way to go, especially when they are teething!
Thank you again for all your replies. I really want to ask more but ché is awful and all I can do for now is ask you about Omeprazole doses. Do any of you know how much Omeprazole I can give him? He's on 10mg now and weighed 16lb a month ago

Omep dose is 0.7-3.3mg/kg with a maximum dose of 20mg per day in a baby. As Che is over 7kg he'd be able to have the maximum dose of 20mg (subject to a paed saying so of course) Jen x

Hi Emma.
Everyone's given you great advice already but I just wanted to say that food reactions can take a while to show. Douglas is an extreme case with a specific diagnosis of EGID but he can appear fine with a food for several days and the go haywire. I was thrilled to bits when he was still ok with rice after 3 days then say 4 he woke up crying all night and did an almighty mucousy poo the next day. What their bowels as well as their reflux. Constipation, diarrhoea and particularly the mucous poo can all be signs of reactions. They may also be signs of an immature digestive system but if you are doing the purée route, I'd give it 4-5 days before introducing a new food. X

I've spoken to the dietician about Ché today.  She didn't seem convinced that he's having reactions.  As usual, I've had to deal with ignorance that has become the norm with the medics.....she tried to find other reasons for his screaming and upset.  First of all she tried saying it's probably coz he's getting used to a spoon...but I said no he's loving eating the actual foods, the reaction is afterwards.  So she said that he's probably working himself up and screaming for more food!!!  So I said no, he's screaming and upset 24/7 and waking at night upset during the times that we've tried weaning.  I also told her that I know when he's refluxing a lot of the time and that the absence of vomit doesn't mean he's not refluxing.  She wasn't really getting it and said he's probably constipated or teething!!  It was like talking to brick wall but she has prescribed some Neocate Spoon for us to try.  Can someone tell me more about this please because I don't know what it is.

Emma , I've just picked mine up today , they are sachets that you can mix to a spoonable consistency to give on its own or mix with other foods and it's for baby's over 6 months who have allergies and intolerences and feeding problems. Our Dietican spoke to the rep yesterday and she said it can also be sprinkled dry into food but it's not complete they have still got to have the neocate it's to give extra vitamins and calcium etc that they are missing from not getting enough formula .
She has prescribed one sachet a day as she has worked out that is what he needs to cover the shortfall as hes getting 13 ounces in foods and he will drink a small amount Usually in the morning , I'm just glad out Dietican is helpful !! Xx
Hope that makes sense

Thanks Catherine!  I just read your post about Cian and possible reactions to what you thought were safe foods.  I really hope you get to the bottom of it.  This whole thing can be so confusing!!!
