LittleRefluxers

Hi guys well Isla (15wks on Monday) has recently been gagging and vomiting her ompemazole 15mg up straight after she's been on it since April 15th, now I think some days there is improvement and others not. She has a cold and bad chest at the moment so not giving her ompremazole for the last 3 days and shes been fine with hardly any reflux! Now would I be silly in not restarting the ompremazole? ?

hiya hun

i am not sure of what to advise you to do but heres my story....

my DS (now 21 months) spent the first 4-5 months of his life screaming in pain. hardly slept and was permanently aggitated. Looking back on it, with the knowledge i now have of reflux, i think he had silent reflux. all the signs were there but none of the health professionals picked up on it (i was told it was colic but i don't think it was and didn't even think it back then).

slowly he got better and virtually overnight (and i mean overnight) he changed.....he just stopped screaming and seemed such a happier child (about 5 months as i remember starting baby groups at that time) and was feeding really well.

My point is: do children out grow it? is it just something they were unlucky enough to get? perhaps your DD is at the stage she is outgrowing it?

My DD is on meds. yeah, there is an improvement but i often wonder if left alone would she, like my son, just outgrow the reflux? i am not sure.

i think, if your DD is not presenting with reflux stay off the meds....i am no expert but if they show signs of returning then restart her (that is what i would do).

Hope i have helped and i REALLY hope her reflux doesn't return.
if you are going to stop it you should perhaps just start reducing the dose rather than just stopping altogether (eg go down to 10mg for a couple of days, then 5mg etc). but then you say she's not had it for 3 days and has been ok. i have to say from experience with ds when we've tried to reduce his dosage its almost been immediate the effects (as in we go back to full blown symptoms within 12 hours) so we've never got past reducing his dose more than on one day as we've always had to go back up to the full dose the follwoing day. (lol hope that makes sense!). so i'm guessing that perhaps she's going to be ok if she's not showing any symptoms? like pp says why not keep her off it and then if she starts showing symptoms again then restart it?? have you done anything different/changed milk etc in between times that might explain the change?

btw great name for your daughter :-) our dd is also called isla :-) xx
Thanks guys for your help, well its day 5 of no meds and she seems okay!!! Ive not changed anything else so maybe its just pure luck that her symptoms have improved. I will restart it if she displays any symptoms, fingers crossed that because she is getting older her oesophogus is getting stronger and less acid is being produced???? Oh my I'll be so happy for her if she does continue to be okay. Have consultant appt on 28th reckon they wont be very happy in me stopping the meds!
That's Fantastic Sarah Jane...I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you & your Lo!!!
I'm sure hosp won't mind you'll be saving them time & money & will be pleased she's better!
When I stopped the Domperidone, as never seemed to help my Lo, I also worried about their reactions esp as recently he was going thro bad patch, but so far Hv & Dr supportive & didn't feel there'd be any benefit starting it again. Haven't seen consultant yet tho...
Really pleased for you! x
Doh! I spoke too soon. Had to restart the medication again as isla's symptoms came back violently. she's having a really bad time with it today so feeling abit guilty for not giving her the meds over a 5 day period. Thanks to you all for your replys x
THe same thing happened with my little boy. We were actually told by the pead to stop meds as he was doing so well with just the milk but then he got a tummy bug, and then a cold, and then teeth appeared and then 2 more tummy bugs and then more teeth! All these affect reflux so basically, he's been back on meds since the day after the paed told me to stop them! She mentioned this does happen often, that babies show massive signs of improvement and then go back to displaying symptoms. I didn't give him anything yesterday and we had an awful night. He's teething which doesn't help but I too felt guilty for not giving him anything. Have you spotted anything that might have triggered the relapse like teething for ex?
