Stressing about nursery managing Cians needs , anyone got any experience with nursery and LR !

Hi All
Cian is going into nursery in four weeks and I'm so stressed as Cian is only drinking 4 ounces of neocate a day , Im having to make custard , make few ounces up and also add it to his pureed foods . I have tried everything ( he was drinking 21 ounces before ph test) putting it in a beaker , dream feeding but nothing working ! He gets upset when he sees the bottle and starts fussing .
When he goes to nursery will they go to the same lengths I do to get the required amount into him?? I
So worried about the whole thing and sods law Dietican is away. I
Also worried about the medication side of things , what are your experiences with nurseries with you LR with diet , medication etc
Making myself Ill with all the worry !

If it helps Charlie hasn't had any milk (Neocate) regularly in his diet since 9-10 months old and our dietician and feeding specialist are fine with it as long as he has a balanced diet.  Like you I worried myself stupid about it but in the last 6 months Charlie has probably got through 3 tins in total.  How old is Cian now?  Does he eat enough solids to continue to gain weight?  If so I would try and relax a bit and maybe get some calcium supplements if you're worried.

No experience just wanted to say I'm in the same boat and would be interested to see how you get on.

I was meant to go back to work tomorrow but delayed it on the advice of our gastro paed and now dont go back to work until April. Our nursery have been very understanding but they are honest in saying they feel slightly daunted by the fact that Noah currently only has one food he tolerates, some days he will drink milk some he won't etc.

The only blessing for me I suppose is that it's literally round the corner from work so if necessary I can pop along fairly quickly.

I hope the transition to nursery is as pain free as possible for your LR.

Hi Catherine,

Just to say try not to worry.  Remember you chose that nursery because you obviously liked it and felt you could trust them with Cian.

Seb's been at nursery for about 4 months now and I must say they are very good with all his needs.  I provide the food so that I know what he is getting.  They are not allowed to offer him anything without ringing me and checking first. If Cian won't take milk from them is there any chance he'll have a yoghurt instead.  I make it using water, cornflour and neocate - so it's basically milk which has set, and at least then you know he's getting a decent amount into him. Only takes a few mins to make aswell so easy to do in the morning before nursery if you haven't managed it the night before!

If you still try to give Cian his morning and evening bottle, then he should be ok without a bottle during the day if he has alternatives such as yoghurt and custard.  Many of my friends babies who aren't refluxers gave up daytime milk at 6 months and are all fine.

As for medication the nursery are very good about given him the right stuff.  We needed a letter from our doctor stating what medication he was on.  Each time they administer something it's written in a book which we have to sign at the end of the day.

All I would say is speak to the nursery about your concerns, and label evrything food related, as you don't want Cian ending up with the wrong food.

Hope this has helped put your mind at ease.x

Thanks Ladies, it has put my mind at rest. We have a settling in day on 17 th so I will discuss it with them then, they did say it wouldn't be a problem being on medication, I suppose my anxieties are related to my job as a care home manager as I have had to deal with staff mistakes with service users diet and medication on many occasions.

Helen thanks for that, CIan is 8 months on the 20 th jan , he is taking enough solids to put weight on. How do I get the calcium supplements , can I buy them or does the dietician have to arrange for GP to prescribe them.?

Thanks GIllian, I'll let you know how I get on.

Laura , I will try him with the yogurt again , he wouldn't have it last time but at the time he wasn't used to cold foods and maybe add the moo free chocolate drops to flavour it. I think also it will put my mind at rest if I I take my own food as there's so many things he can't have I don't want them to give it to him accidentially.

I also was worried about the dosages changing so often and getting medication bottlerede labeled as our policy working for local government is the label on the bottle has to be correct but if they will accept the letter from the GP stating mg per kg it would make things a lot easier.

Laura is completely right and we've had the same positive experience with my daughter. She's 14 months and has been in nursery since she was 6 months old and she absolutely adores it. She is on a highly restricted (4 food only) diet and so I send her food in with her because then I can be certainshe has what I want, although our nursery are happy to prepare her meals for her even when so restricted.  Meds-wise, they give her 9 throughout the day if that reassures you at all. It's written in a book and I sign when I collect her. Hope that helps (and makes sense - typing on phone so can't read what is written). S xx her.
Thanks Sarah , wish I'd have posted this weeks ago have spent , last few weeks worrying about it ! Xx

Go and talk to them, Catherine. Our nursery have been really great with Matthew, I was worried because it seemed to take his keyworker a while to get to grips with what he can't have to eat, but they've bent over backwards to accomodate him. To start with I had to go through all the monthly menus with her but they seem to have got it now. The cook often makes him special buns or whatever so he doesn't have to miss out. We provide Oatly and dairy free spread, and to start with I gave them a bagful of "safe" snacks, but they seem to be up and running with it now.

Matthew pretty much refuses to have Oatly as a drink so he doesn't really "drink milk". He still has a couple of breastfeeds a day and I get a couple of portions of Oatly into him in porridge or rice pudding, but he has a calcium supplement to make up the difference so I/nursery don't have to stress about milk intake.

They haven't had to give medication as he was on once daily omep when he started, but I'm sure they said they could give prescribed medication as long as you sign the relevant permission form.

It feels like an insurmountable hurdle but I'm sure he'll be fine once he gets into the swing of it. Make a list of the things you are worried about and talk to them before he starts so they can get some plans in place.  Jen xx

Thanks Jen, I could do with asking to see the menus really couldn't I and seeing what is on them before I make the decision to take in my own food.
It reassuring to know that you've had good experience, it's a small nursery so I'm hoping it will have that more personal approach, the cook is the owners mother too so I'm sure she would want to get it right.
The transition to nursery is bad enough without the added pressure of diet and medication!!
I will write a list as I will probably forget to tell them something, maybe I should draw up a care plan of my own for them to follow , they may think I'm OTT but will put my mind at rest !

Thanks again girls don't know what I'd do with out your replies, drive my husband mad is a sure thing and then maybe a straight jacket !!!! Xx
Catherine the calcium supplement is called calcium sandoz apparently that's the only one available in a liquid form they need to be done on a prescription. Also you can get a to d vitamins which are £1.80 and only contain them vitamins and a banana flavouring. You can get them from health visitors.

Hopefully put your mind at rest a bit x

hi catherine

i remember the feeling well, Rosie started nursery at the beginning of October and i was absolutely dreading it. Before she started we had a few really bad months with her refusing her nutramigen AA and i was having a right panic that the nursery staff wouldnt be able to dedicate as much time to her etc. She has been fine though and really enjoys playing with the other babies. She takes her milk really well now but i thnk that is due to her being changed onto lansprazole 2 weeks before she started nursery so it had just had the right amount of time to kick in. Food wise i always provide the food as it is too much of a faff going through the menu's, i tried that initially but there was hardly anything she could eat (she is CMPI and MFPI) and i wanted to be absolutely sure of what she was getting and the consistency of it as we have had big problems with her gagging and not tolerating lumps. Its working out really well they write down everything shes done, how much she has eaten, even when she has poo'd and what it looks like!( they know i need to check for mucus or signs of constipation) ..she goes to nursery for 2 days a week and then to grandma for 2 days.I actually have more problems getting grandma to follow instructions ...inlaws eh!

Try not to worry i bet Cian will be fine just be really clear with your instructions ..writing a care plan is a good idea, i did that too xx good luck

Thanks Clare,
How old was your LO when she started nursery ?
I'm just sooo glad my Inlaws haven't got him as I would be in a straight jacket as they can't follow instructions when I'm there watching !!! I think they think I'm being over the top about his reflux as they say " he looks health and a good weight " !!!!!!!! Could scream !

Xx
