LittleRefluxers

Dear All,

about a year ago i was on this site pretty much every moment of my free time. With a refluxer that wasn't very much at all. My little boy, who is now 2, suffered with Silent Reflux, and in my opinion didn't outgrow it until he was about 14-15 months. Having said that, i don't think he has totally outgrown it as he sometimes still possets and will often go have a suck of his dummy for a few seconds after he's eaten a biscuit or had a drink. The dummy has always helped his reflux. i don't know what i would have done without it
Anyway, Maxi (my son) was a baby that, until he was 18-19 months old, woke up every 2 hours at night. I kid you not. He would fall asleep at 7, wake up at 9 crying inconsolably for half an hour to then fall asleep exhausted in my arms, to then wake up again 2 hours later, to cry for another 20-30 minutes, to.... repeat until you get to 7am the next day.
I swear on my life, my husband's life and that of my child that i am not exagerrating in any way.
During the day, his sleep was not much better. He slept 40 minutes at lunch time, and that was it. But he would wake up crying and screaming inconsolably and angrily and with hindsight it is soooo obvious to me now that he was tired and wanted to sleep more but couldn't.
At 18/19 months we went on holiday to Italy for 2 weeks, Maxi slept through the night and was doing 3 and a half hour naps at lunch. We could not understand why or how but were very grateful. We finally got some rest. We then got home after the 2 weeks and the first night back the 2 hourly waking began and the next day the lunch time napos went back to 40 minutes. I was in tears but realised that it had to be something in the house. We had at this point already tried pretty much everything: cammomile teas, laveder drops, no protein after 5pm, etc etc.
Then something clicked.
I have no idea why it clicked, almost 19 months into the whole saga but it did,. An angel coming to my rescue, i guess.
Maxi's cot was situated directly under our wireless router. Although not in the same room, he was directly under the little white British Telecom box andi thought maybe , just maybe , that was what was disturbing his sleep. causing him headaches? maybe he could hear it?? i had no idea but that day i switched it iff and "went back to the wire" and that night Maxi slept through. The next night and the night after and the night after = Maxi slept. Never waking. His naps lasted 2 hours, sometimes 3. 3 weeks later, beacsuuse our friends were laughing at us, telling us we weer flaky hippies, we switched the wireless back on. Guess what? Maxi woke up after 2 hours. With the same inconsolable , angry crying.
Anyway, long story short - from when we switched off the wireless router Maxi slept and he slept and sleeps well.
Talking to guys i later met who work in IT, they all now tell me that as soon as their little ones were born they went "back to the wire" becasue it isa known fact that EMFs disturb sleep and that routers transmit downwards so we should have had ours, not in the loft but ideally in a cellar or ground floor. Certainly not above his bed.
Anyway, many of you will have a child that doesn't sleep bceause of reflux and but if any of you are questioning whether it is the reflux that is breaking up your child's sleep and have wirelss in your home, try switching it off and going back to a wire. What have you git to lose? worth a try no?
By the way, you can't just switch t off before bedtime and keep it on during theday. The EMFs build up during the time the thing is on. So i am told.
Hope this works for some of you. Worked for 4 friends of mine so i now know i am not a flaky hippy :0)

You have just described my son, he does exactly this wakes every two hours and I am thinking this can't be reflux and our wireless router is next door to our sons room, hes on the other side of the wall from it, thank you so much and I really hope it works - I will let you know, although my husband is going to think I am mad!

oh my goodness!!!! That is exactly my son too!!!!!! The wireless is at the end of his cot!!! Always has been! He is 11 months... I will speak to my husband when he wakes up ( got a break last night for once!!) and see what he says...now, where IS that wire....

My son had ph study 2 weeks ago that did actually show that his night wakings did coincide with the reflux though. But anyway ANYTHING is worth a go! Will try today! Thanx so much for your story.
Hi ya SPOOKIE, my daughter is 14 months and wakes at night, not 2 hourly thankfully but for 2 hours tossing turning whinging (dummies are great for reflux totally agree). We have wire less but its down in the living room not above her, its under her. Dont think its any thing to do with it,,, Reflux pretty much under control we think. Day sleeps fab 2 to 3 hours on an afternoon.
Francesca I love you and I'm sending you a huge hug today and THIS WORKS!!!!!! I turned off our router yesterday morning after reading this post and for the first time in 6 months my little man slept last night, he didn't even stir! My husband and I were still awake amazed that he was sleeping though, I can't quite believe it but ours is directly the other side of the wall to him so I guess it does make sense, it is like a huge jigsaw puzzle that someone just put in the last piece as he has been so settled during the day now hes on omeprazole and even our osteopath who has been fab said he couldn't understand why he wasn't sleeping as its the first time in 19 years that hes had a child it didn't work for - I guess I know now. So thanks again francesca for your post and Gayle please give it a go and I hope it works for you too.

Woo hoo!!!!!
Dear Wendy,
I'm writing this with tears streaming down my cheeks as i am so happy that it worked for you and so happy i had the courage to write the Post. I had ummed and aaahed about it for ages as i knew lots of people would think i was weird and mad. When i told my sister that i was going to switch the wireless router off to see if that was causing Max's wakings, i remember her reaction well. She definitely thought i was losing my marbles.
i have no idea, what it does to them and their sleep - can they her it? does it make a screechy noise like when we used to have dial up internet in the old days? does it give them headaches? does it simply cause "hyperactivity and wiredness"? NO IDEA. it does something. And maybe only to a small percentage of people (children) who are "sensitive" to EMFs. I know that my husband has always complained about not being able to read legal documents from the PC screen at work (he is in a paperless office) as it gives him headaches and hence maybe he's one of these "sensitive" individuals....
Max definitely sleeps VERY well now and we have tested the Wireless thing so we know it is that.
Belinda, yours sounds differenetly but i hope in a way as itis that as it would sove a lot of problems.

I am so grateful to your courage as this is something we would not have thought of in a million years and if your mad then so am I!!

You are also right that you can't just turn it off at night for some reason, it appears to take 12 hours to clear as my husband put it back on yesterday lunchtime to send some work emails from his laptop and then turned it off again, Harry went mad while it was on, shaking his head as if he could hear something nasty, well he woke every 2 hours until 12 hours had elapsed from turning it off again and then he slept the rest of the night - weird and quite scary. My husband wanted to move the router downstairs instead but I have now banned it and told him to ask his work to get him a cable to plug into the phone line and we will just get another socket put in the lounge.

So thanks again for your courage and whatever your sister thinks we know it works and thats all that matters, I've got to tell the HV on Tuesday and she already thinks I'm mad!!

yeah, i know. you literally have to go back to using a wire. i've been told by I.T. guys that the "waves" the EMFs build up as the thing is switched on and stays on and then it takes ages to go.
I don't think that is crazy thing. I really believe in this.
My parents (I'm only 33) were really "careful" on the direction of our bed. They would put our bed ideally to have our head facing North. Then my dad would check if there is no source running under our bed as in the old days they said it would disturb your sleep. (I'm from france so maybe this is never heard here in uk).
Also it is well known not to have any electrical, tv in a bedroom.
Glad you are sharing your experience as there are so many things in life which can affect your sleep. Unfortunately for those who live in flats, even if you don't have wireless you might be affected by your neighbours's wirelss and sadly you can't avoid the wave.
I know it sounds crazy but my husband was saying that the only way to stay away completely from those waves would be to have our little one to sleep in a faraday cage.
google it and then you will see what they look like....not a life!
x
Well, Maxi didn't need a Faraday Cage and i suspect that a lot of children don't.I think there are some that are more sensitive than others to these EMFs and for those, it may well be that simply reducing the waves in the house (ie like switching off the WIFI) may be enough.
I know that, especially in big cities like London, we live in bubble of "EMFs" and we can't get away from them, but my understanding is that you can reduce the levels in your home and i think that this can really help.
Anyway, it worked for us and has worked for a few of our friends. I don't think it is necessarily what works for everyone's child and a lot of the time the sleepissues for the babies and infants on this site will indeed be reflux related. But at 18 months, and sleepong well wgenever we weant away? we figured it wasn't Maxi's reflux waking him up
poo. Didnt make a jot of difference for us :( thanks for your message though. Up every 2 hours last night. husband away too. so tired. Thinking maybe a change of milk may be an idea? Been on neocate for 8 months...
Cheers for the heads up about the wireless, but sadly that did nothing. Seen consultant yesterday and she now needs a dairy free diet.
