LittleRefluxers

Matthew was sick at nursery today, after having been better (mostly) for a good few months. He's not been sick at nursery before (amazingly!) because since starting he's been down to morning and bedtime milk feeds, with only solids between times; solids stay down in his case, usually.

His meds likely need upped and they will be next week at the paed, but for now he's started vomiting again, so...

As he was sick at nursery, they took his temperature. He's teething a lot just now and this has raised his temperature a little bit. Nobody would have noticed except that he was sick. He wasn't unhappy, or grouchy (happy chucker this time) or otherwise ill but policy means they sent him home.

He only goes for 2 x 2 hour slots a week, which were arranged to give me a break from the reflux nightmare. Now I'm back at work, my Mum is watching him and really needs that break, just like I did. Luckily, she could pick him up and I didn't need to leave my work this time.

I understand that they have to protect all the children from potential contagion but it has made me wonder if anyone has had problems keeping their reflux baby in nursery while they're going through a bad phase (and I know for us that was the case constantly for 7 months before he started).

Also, has anyone had problems because baby has needed medicine administered, particularly stuff like Gaviscon or Losec that doesn't come ready prepared?

I know I'm starting a rant here but wondered what others had experienced!

Love,
Marion.

Hi Susie,

Your nursery sounds really well informed, which is great. Were they this clued up on reflux and her high temperature before you enrolled Abbey, or have you managed to educate them?

I'm lucky because I'm back at work, which gives me the break I need! My mum watches Matthew Mon-Fri during the day but she doesn't keep so well, so I like them to keep the nursery hours (few as they are) so that she can get a couple of breaks. I think it's important that Matthew gets a chance to see other kids as often as possible as well.

I think a high temperature on its own would have been fine, because the probably wouldn't ever have noticed. It's only because he was sick that they took his temperature, but that in conjunction with the vomiting made them think he was ill.

I suppose that if he did have a contagious bug, he would be sick with a temperature, so they have to be careful. My post was more about how people cope with this because I imagine a lot of people don't understand why baby is so sick all the time.

Just a prompt for discussion really! I like to stir things... Also thought I might get some hints for what I can tell them to watch for to distinguish between normal sickness and tummy bug sickness :)

Thanks for your post - it's really useful to know that other people have got robust plans in place.

Thanks,

Marion x
