LittleRefluxers

Can anyone recommend a good consultant in Wales?  We will pay privately if we have to but can't afford the investigations that we think we should get.  We have an appt with gastric paed Dr Ieuan Davies (we know nothing about him), but it's 3mths away which is just ridiculous!!  The paed who referred us only did it to cover her own back after problems we had over her missing another condition (erbs palsy).  She has said it's not urgent and not to chase it up as our baby is not a priority!!!!

Both babies have GORD/CMPI but Leo is doing excellent on omep/neocate whereas Ché is having awful problems (he's on Neocate and 10mg Omep but the general paed won't change anything).  They will be 6mths old next week and Ché has spent most of his life screaming in pain with silent reflux.  He is now having reactions to food...we're not sure what yet as we've stopped weaning for the second time and plan to take it more slowly next time.  Our paed asked me if I'm suffering from PND which just goes to show how unsupportive she is!  She lectured us and told us that he is not a priority because he is gaining weight and doesn't vomit.  But he is in pain and on his bad days it is unbearable for us all.  I know he's not losing weight but that's because I fight to get milk into him eveyday which is very very draining and the whole thing is exhausting me.  The relationship with the paed broke down when she failed to notice he had Erbs Palsy and lied to other doctors about it all to cover her own back.  So, I am very reluctant to go back to her about the referral and I don't think I'll get an appt with the gastric paed any sooner based on whats been put on the referral form (that it isn't urgent)  So, I think we need to go privately but who should we see?  I have no idea of who is good in Wales or near Wales!  I don't think we can make the journey to London with the twins as we had a nightmare taking Ché to see an Erbs Palsy specialist in Leeds and I don't think we can go through a journey like that again!

We are really struggling with it all and sometimes we're not sure what is or isn't reflux or a reaction.  People say he's spoilt and it's behavioural but we know it's not, although on times we wonder if they're right!  But we know that when he's not suffering he's not needy and is quite content, but when he's bad he's really bad.  It's difficult to tell exactly why he screams or why he wakes up from naps and through the night seemingly in pain.  It's driving me nuts coz I'm trying to justify things on the one hand while doubting myself on the other.  So, I would really like him to have a ph study so that we know once and for all if it's all reflux or if it's a mixture of things.  Our paed said she's told the gastric paed that I've asked for one but that she doesn't support it as he's gaining weight (she was originally going to refer him for one but has completely gone against it now).

I'm worried that the gastric paed won't take us seriously as the general paed has a close relationship with him and has probably discussed our case.  He may be good but how do I find out more about him?  If he has a good reputation I can consider paying to see him privately then keep the NHS appointment as a follow up!  Is it possible to be referred back to the NHS for the tests then?  Does Dr Shah in GOSH refer people for tests on the NHS is you pay for a private consultation?  I can afford the consultation fee but not the tests and follow-ups!

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help!

Emma , I've just googled him and he teaches as well by the look of it and works from the university hospital so he should have all the upto date knowledge , would it not be worth taking Chè to the a and e and say your worried about his feeding , tell them taking less and less , and explain all his issues , maybe you might get somewhere especially if you say you have an appointment already in a few months anyway , you may get to see the consultant if he'd around ? Just a thought
Sorry should have said to take Chè to the university hosp xx
I would phone the nhs guys sec and explain the situation. She may well be able to speak to him for you or tell you more about his private practice if he has one.
I don't think he does Sarah , when I googled him it just lists NHS and some comittee he's on.
But I agree with Sarah I'd try and ring the secretary first see if that gets you anywhere , nothing to loose xx

Do you mean to the a&e at the university hospital? Am I allowed to do that?

It's the hospital that did our fertility treatment and it's not too far away. Would they see us if I just said he's not feeding well then? I know our luck...we'll turn up with a sleeping content baby and look like liars!!!

Yes Emma they have a & e I've checked and It's worth a try!  video Chè feeding etc before you go just in case he's an angel

Xx
Oh and if you turn up at a and e they have to see you and from what I ve read on here your better at university hosp , thing Sarah told someone else to do the same.
Xx
