LittleRefluxers

Wow am I glad I found this group!! Just wondered Iif anyone had had any issues weaning with a reflux baby? My son is 17 weeks on sat and is on infant gaviscon and ranitidine for reflux.
He was premature by 5 weeks which I think is one of the reasons for the reflux so we will be weaning him at about 21 weeks but just wondered if you had encountered any problems or if things improved?
Thanks
Stacie x

You'll find if you look back through the threads this topic is discussed so often as most health professions seem to encourage early weaning for refluxers.

In reality it seems to be a rule of thirds.

One third will improve with solids
One third will get worse
One third it'll make no difference.

My LR was 7 weeks early and we started weaning at 17 weeks (10wks corrected) If I could do it again I wouldn't even consider starting early. Noah has other problems with multiple food allergies and intolerances so maybe weaning was always going to go badly for us but I wish we'd waited til he was closer to 6 months before starting.
I tried weaning at 4 months, then 6 months then started again very slowly just before he turned 7 months. We're introducing new foods very slowly and finding he can't tolerate all foods.
My advice would be to go at your baby's pace, try it, if they're not ready then there's no pressure, try again later!
We weaned at 17 weeks on doctors advice and initially there was an improvement he wasn't being sick as much, but then all sorts of problems started courting as he has food allergies and intolerances. He is now 9.5 months old and were still in a confused state with regards to food lol!

I advice if you want to try it then take it really really slow introduce one food at a time and try that food for 4 days. Also of you think it's making your lo worse then stop weaning and try again another time.

I meant happening not courting! Silly phone. Also if I could go back I would have waitied until he was 6 months old x

HI Stacie - welcome to LR!

We tried at about 20 weeks and it went badly and seemed to make it all worse so we stopped until after 6 months and did babyled weaning which was a very gradual introduction to food. My LR is intolerant to milk and soya though, and it does seem that the babies with intolerances are mainly in the "third that get worse" category.

Interesting thread. I was pushed to wean early cos of Joe's reflux . I didn't listen cos he is No 3 and my other too have food intolerances so felt all the more reason to wait til 6 months. We did and have BLWed it's been a brilliant introduction to food (I've puréed with the other 2) and I'm glad I didn't bow to the pressure as the vomiting worsened for at least a fortnight but then settled down. So hard to know eh? What I don't get is if you wean early it's purees, virtually liquid so why would it stay down any better? Good luck x
