LittleRefluxers

Hi girls,

Emma has had a dummy since about 3 months old - she was 1 year 2 weeks ago.Various drs and hvs have told me that dummies can help with the reflux - something to do with the saliva helping - so i've let her have it much longer than ds (gone by 7 months).

But last night was an awful night. She was up every hour all night. I know it wasn't her reflux playing up as all she wanted was her dummy and a cuddle. No other signs of teething or illness causing it, which leads me to believe she's now waking for the dummy.

As it's bank holiday weekend and oh is at home to help, I'm seriously considering ditching the dummy from tonight onwards.

Any suggestions??

My ds had his dummy till 2 only at night & had nights like yours only when teething so could it just be early stages of teething when teeth just starting to move under gums? Esp if its the big ones they can takes ages to really show.
Does she have them in day too as I'd stop that 1st. Have you tried glo in dark ones or a short dummy clip so she could find it in night herself when needed?
hi marnie my son still has his dummy at nap times i would love to get rid to but i have also been told that dummies help reflux babys, its not any easy decision to make but i would give it a go bite the bullet it might be hard at first but could be worth it in the end.

good luck

I should take some of my own advice and give it a go to!
Well, yesterday was awful!!! I decided to put her to bed without the dummy to see what would happen, and after 10 minutes of crying she made herself sick!!! So after i changed her and the bed i gave her the dummy and she went straight to sleep. We had another awful night and i even had to bring her into bed with me as she wouldn't settle at all. I've no idea why she's not sleeping well atm, I really hope its because she is teething (although no other signs yet!). I left her dummy in the cot this morning, as she hasn't been looking for it at all, so hopefully i can at least stop her from having it during the day!!!
oh poor you. yeah just try to cut dummy out of day time and just keep for naps if she is teething this will make the reflux worse so she will want dummy more than ever! with harry i put about five dummys in his cot i still have cot bummper on to stop them fulling out i use cherry teet ones thay seams to work well for harry.
I think you are brave for giving it a go! i wish i could do it but i keep putting it off! CLUCK CLUCK!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck
I wouldn't worry if I were you about getting rid of dummies you and your babes have enough to deal with!!
My son & his friends all gave them up happily at 2yrs swapping them for a new special teddy (mine had muslin anyway so just kept this) after reducing usage to bed & nap times.
All have good teeth, social skills & excellent speech (well mine has slight speech issues but nothing to do with dummy use, due to hearing problems which have hopefully now been sorted by surgery & speech already improving).
His cousin stopped hers at 3 & is no different to her brother who had his taken away after couple of months.
None were allowed to permanantly have them stuffed in mouth day & night, which I feel is where they cause problems.
Dummies also reduce risk of cot death!
Unfortunately my Lo has refused dummy preferring his own fingers which will be harder to wean him off but if it keeps him happy I've given up fighting it!
Give yourselves a break...life is hard enough!!!
Hi Marine/ My daughter is 20 months old and still has her dummy 80% of the time, she will give it to you in the day time if you ask her for it, but you have no chance at night. she will not sleep with out it, and even some times likes to hold one in her hand.
She has never been a great sleeper and still does not sleep completely through.
I totally agree with Sarah, reflux is tough enough, I dont mind if she has a dummy a little while longer just till the reflux nightmare is completely over. One battle at a time so to speak.
Thanks Sarah and Belinda,

I've taken everyone's advice and stopped it during the day completely, and so far it's been good and she doesn't seem to be missing it. The other odd thing that's happened as as she's only having it at night, she seems to be sleeping better! maybe because she really appreciates it now?? No idea but I'm not complaining!!!
That's good!
