LittleRefluxers

Hiya,
My son has been on 1.2mls of ranitadine twice a day for 6 months. It stopped working recently so I went to the GP today to up the dose because am not seeing the Paed until January. She upped it to 5mls twice a day!! That seems like an enormous jump to me! He is 9.5kgs/21lbs and the solution is 150 in 10mls. Does that seem like the right dose?
I've had a look at www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz which suggests it is ok but I don't undertsand the solution bit. Does that make a difference?
Thats a good website BTW - worth a read for refluxy babies!
Thanks in advance
Clare

Hi Claire

When my little girl was on ranitidine I set up a spreadsheet to work out her dosage and according to that (based on a liquid where 10ml contains 150mg of ranitidine) the new maximum dosage would be 1.9ml 3 times a day!!! 5ml twice a day sounds like a huge dose to me.... If you'd like me to send you the spreadsheet so you can work out the dosage yourself (maybe safer than your doc!!!!) then PM your e-mail address.

Evie used to be just the same, her weight would increase and the meds would stop working but once we corrected her dose, even if just by a tiny amount, it would make a huge difference xxx
HI,

That seems too much to me, my daughter is 9kgs and her max dose is about 2.8ml twice a day. This was worked out by the pead and it is the solution 150 in 10mls. Their is a dosage calculater within the topic "Gutted" that someone else has posted if this helps you. Hope the dosage gets sorted out soon for your little boy.

Thats wrong hun - please don't give it - my dosage chart also says 1.9 ml 3 times a day max
Crikey I'm glad I checked! I did give it to him this evening - a once off won't hurt will it? Tried to find that dosage calculator in 'Gutted' but couldn't see it. Nicola am not sure how to pm but will have a go in a sec.
Thank you everyone. I am shocked. I would have just given that no question - blimmin GPs!!!
Have just found that calculator - thank you. God I feel a bit sick. If I hadn't checked I'd have merrily given him 5mls twice a day! He is allowed 1.9mls 3 times a day which means a total of 5.7mls. Today he has had 6.2 - 1.2 this morning and 5 this evening. So has only slightly overdosed. Think that is ok?
Thanks again everyone.
THanks Susie,
He actually had the best nights sleep in months!! Not that I'll be trying that again mind ;-) Am off to check with a pharmacist today and then I'm going to complain - not to be mean but she needs to realise that she's got that doseage completely wrong and can't do it again!
Thanks again
xx
I got that dosage from the internet and it corresponds with my GPs book on drugs so I am sure its right hun

But shocked yr GP would get it soooooo wrong

Bet when you use the right dose yr LO will be much better
hi there i have looked in the children bnf doses for ranitadine, as follows: neonate 1-2mg/kg 3 times a day
child 1-6 months 1mg/kg 3 times a day max 9mg/kg in dvided doses
child 6 -months- 12 years 2-4/kg max 159mg twice daily. To work out how to measure your childs dose use this calculation:

a child is pescribed erythromycin. therecommended dosage is 40mg/kg/day, 4 daily doses daily. if the child weights is 15kg calculate the size of a single dose.
example : 15kg
x 40mg/kg/day
_______
4) 600mg/day
________
150mg/dose
________
--------------

answer: 150mg dose

the solution bit is this, in 10mls you have 150mg so in 5 mls he is having 75mg twice a day.

in 5mls you will have 75mg and so on, i would ask your pharmacist as they are the last checkers for the doctors and they do the working ou bit. by my reckoning he was on about roughly 37.mg a day ish i would recomend you check with your pharmacist or should have an on line pharmacist who could help also, if n doubt dont give it, best to check, hope made sense, i would not like to advice anything other than to check, also check out the bnf website and drug calculation websites for help.

hope this helped or confused ???? you
