LittleRefluxers

Please help- Im at my wits end. I have a beautiful 9 week old baby girl. Since week 2 she has been a 'bad' feeder. She had some reflux but i felt there was more acid coming up than milk. Baby Gaviscon has stopped any sickness, but she has always been a reluctant feeder. The past two weeks she has been arching her back, crying, squirming and turning away from her bottle. Sometimes this is before she has even had a sip- so now I am confused is this still reflux? Or a fussy baby?? She has gone from taking 5oz in 1 hr to taking just 2. I broke down in the drs this morning and feel like I need some help. Lily is generally content and as soon as the feed is finished she is again content. Im not sure what to do. Im sure she is going to get very cranky and hungry soon. How can I make things better???

I feel for you greatly, it is awful to see youdaughter like that I have been there with my son. Firstly all the symptons you describe sound very much like reflux, never doubt your concerns you know your baby and you know when things aren't right. My son was diagnosed with silent reflux (when the acid rises up and down in the throat, but doesn't projectile vomit) at 6 weeks although I think he had it from birth. He is now on several medications to stabalise it and we regularly see a consultant. I have found my H.V absolutely brilliant, if you havn't already done so why not speak to her. I have found that reflux is actually very common, but I have felt exactly the same as you and cried many times. Babies learn at a very early age how to refuse things and if your little one is getting pain whilst feeding she will quickly learn to associate. Push your doctor to refer you to a consultant. What have you tried so far? Is it only at feed times that she suffers? I have no miracle cures (unfortunately) but sometimes it just helps to talk to someone whos been there!!!! Take care and let me know how you get on.

Hi ya, first thing is keep your chin up, (hard I know) but your doing the best you can in the situation. I would deffinatly say It is silent reflux, and the other lady is 100% right.. due to the amount of pain and discomfort your little one must be in, they quickly learn to refuse what is hurting them.
Im sorry I cant offer you any help on the feeding routine except to say just keep trying, maybe if you get some good pain medication she'll feed better.
Speak to your H.V or G.P and demand they refer you to a consultant at the hospital who knows about reflux...make a complete pain of your self until they do, DONT BE FOBBED OFF.
It is true Gaviscon can help, but I always found not very well on its own, my daughter was on,
Gaviscon: A coating medication helps with the burning feeling.(acid)
Domperidone: Emptys the tummy quicker after a feed so there is not as much acid produced to break the feed down.
Omeprozole: An antacid tablet, again stops to much acid being built up.
Thick and easy or Carbol: A thickning agent to help keep the milk/water/juice down, so thats not refluxed.
My daughter produced lots of acid and this would stop her breathing. She would always take her feeds but never enjoyed them, and at 5 months old refused to have any more, I found out at 14 months old she had an intolarence to dairy, since putting her on a dairy fee diet things have improved, (just another avenue you could look into. Dont no about the diff milk was never offered any but there are loads of others on here that will help.
Dont know if it helps but I use to wind my daughter after about every 2oz and this helped for us.
Fingers crossed, be strong it does get better, Iv'e been in your shoes, and I wish i could help. let me know how you get on x
