LittleRefluxers

My 17 week old baby has had reflux since birth but has now decided he doesnt want to have a bottle. He screams hysterically when i put the bottle into his mouth. Our consultant says that he has oral aversion due to the pain he is suffering from the reflux, he associates pain with feeding. Ive been told to try feeding in a calm dark room with little stimulation which sometimes helps but very rarely! Does anybody have any experiences with this or any ideas for me to try out. Help!!!

Hi Elaine,

Thanks for your advice. I have noticed that distraction helps when feeding, if Charlie can get himself fixed on looking at something then he takes his feed better.

He is under a consultant pead who also advised us to wean early so ive started him on baby rise but it doesnt seem to have made any difference yet. Im hoping it will though!

He is on gaviscon, ranitidine and donperidone for the reflux which must be working as when i stopped the ranitidine he started to be sick quite a lot.

I know what you mean about you crying all the time, thats what i do all the time! Its nice to hear a happy story and to hear that it will eventually get better. 10 months seems like a long way off as Charlie is only 4 months but i know we'l get there in time!

Thanks Emily, thanks for your advice.

Charlie is under a consultant paed who specialises in reflux. He has referred us to a speech and language therapist to assess his feeding and oral skills so im clinging to that hoping it might bring us a miracle!

I use Dr Brown bottles but i might try the cup thing, you never know, il try anything for a feed that isnt so upsetting.

How long did your dd suffer with the aversion? Charlie is already on gaviscon, ranitidine and donperidone so not sure there is anything else to be offerred for the pain?

Thanks Emily, i hvae started to wean Charlie last week and he doesnt seem to be frightened of feeding from a spoon so fingers crossed it will sort him out!
