LittleRefluxers

On day 5 of Nutramigen and reflux symptoms seem worse anyone else experienced this?

My 6 week old baby has been suffering with silent reflux from week one after being bottle fed from birth on SMA gold after taking her to the doctors we were given infant gaviscon to try which seemed to improve symptoms about 60% after speaking to health visitor who contacted a dietician it was recommended that we try Nutramigen formula as it was likely she may have a possible milk allergy or lactose intolerance.

After gradually introducing Nutramigen over a period of 5 days she is now purely on Nutramigen and have stopped the SMA we  are carrying on with the infant gaviscon but her reflux symptoms are getting worse to the point that we are now back where we started with her not settling at all and us all getting very little sleep it is devasting to see her in so much pain and when she does sleep i'm terrified of her choking.

We were told to give the Nutramigen, 2 weeks as this is how long it is suppose to take for the SMA to come out of her system does anyone know if this is the case? and whether we should just give it time to work? i'm not sure i can wait another week and watch her suffering.

Hi Sian
Jesus what a day, whoever thought motherhood was easy didn't have a child with reflux or allergies. Nickers not been too bad today, although something clearly pissing her off. She has been awake most of today and think the milk and meds still working their magic as she's different everyday. One good thing is that as she's actually started moving her bowels the wind seems to be getting out on the other hand, she's pooping loads and it's upsetting her as it's coming so hard, it's popping right through her nappy, lol sorry for being so graffic. Could Cerys have a touch of asthma? I have got to say the combination of milk change/meds has certainly calmed Nicole, but I know now why they say it can take 2-4 weeks cos honestly she is so different every day, thankfully most days better than the next (touch wood). The whole chemist/doctor/hospital communication your end sounds the same as here (nightmare), god if I acted like this lot in my job, my ass would be out the door, and I certainly don't deal with poorly kids at work. Ice-cream sounds fab. I have my sister up tomorrow as it's a year tomorrow since my dad died, so after crainiologist tomorrow, Nicole's all daddy's. I really can't beleive how much she's been awake today. My health visitor mentioned the other day that there is something that can be added to Nutramigen aa etc to make it taste better. What do you think the reason is that Cerys isn't eating? do you think wheezes bothering her when eating or other symptoms too? God love the wee monkey's xxx
No dont think its asthma, she is just chesty because of the dairy intolerance i thinik but cant cut it out cause its the only thing she will take, Hope you have a lovely time with your sister you should go for lunch and have a big glass of wine, sorry to hear about your dad, i lost my mother in law last year too when i was 6 months pregnant!
I will get the omeprazole on monday and hope that makes things better and then maybe if that sorts her out she might take a new milk.
Jesus this is a long road and i feel like there is no light at the end of it, cant wait till she is 2 and running about and sits at the table for her meals lol.
My hubby has decided to take next week off work to give me a break, dont know what i would do without him i tell ya, dont know how these single mothers cope!! Got cery's christening a week on sunday so that is something to look forward too, but her pead appointment is the deay after so ill have to limit my drinking lol.
Have a great day today x
Hi Sian
Nicole's had a day of two halves today, she was really really upset this morning and still upset when I took her to Crainiologist - this woman is amazing, she can calm nickers in minutes. She said that as Nicole has taken the wrong milk for so long her wee insides will be all swollen and irritated and will take a few weeks to settle down again, but she managed to release something in her tummy that was blocked, she said that her tummy was rotating (whatever that means) and she managed to do something to that. She's been pretty much asleep other than feeds, since we got back at 2pm, up now though so we'll see how she goes. I know what you mean, this feels like such a long road with no end, Nicole is just so upset whenever awake, it's awful. I need a vodka!!!!xx
i have already had a few glasses of wine lol, oh well at least hubby is off for 10 days now, heaven, think i need to see one of them cranigolists, maybe it might help, im half cut now lol so things seem alot easier, she had 5oz this morning then a high calorie pot at 9 then a 6 oz bottle at 11.30 then 2/4 jar at 2.30 and 2 and half oz of milk then 5oz bottle before bed, not sure what to do but i managed to get her drugs today so starting on them tommorow. my sis in law is a sister in the cancer ward at the hospital so managed to get them early, fingers crossed, hope you had a nice day with your sister xxx hope you had loads of vodka lol xx
Thats great u got the meds. I asked the crainiologist if she'd like to move in with us today, and she thought I was joking lol. Am still too scared to have a vodka - think one would lead to 25 and that wouldnt do with little missy when upset lol. I hope we get there soon and Cerys starts eating and Nickers stops crying xx
lets hope so. xx
Hi Sian,
I know how you feel now with a baby that won't feed, my little girl is slowly feeding less and less it is so worrying i'm lucky if she drinks 2oz's at each feed.
She used to be on 5oz's every 4 hours now shes just not interested and so unsettled got an emergency doctors appointment this afternoon he said he would probably prescribe ranitadine not sure thats going to help much.
Have you ever been given an explaination as to why your little one won't feed is it because of the acid causing pain when swallowing?
It just seems really sudden with my baby but she does seem in more discomfort and gone back to not wanting to be put down.
Hi kathry,

Never been given an explanation just them guessing all the time, she had 6 different milks and numerous meds, the ranitadine helped a little with the screaming but not the amount she took, she is now on omeprazole and we are slowly seeing a little improvement although still only taking 5-6oz and she is 5 month old now!! They think my daughter has dairy intolerance and she was given loads of dairy free milks but she took less of them so i kept her on sma, never sure what to do for the best, just gotta keep going and try not to go insane, its the most awful experience to see your little one not eating and not gaining the right amount of weight, but i just keep hoping she will grow out of it, thats the only hope i have!!!
Have you been to peadiatrics yet?
No have been referred now just waiting the appointment. We have noticed a slight improvement on the ranitidine but she has only had 2 doses so far as i only got it yesterday still not feeding very well in the day but take 5oz for my husband last night.
Debbie how old is your little one??
Madeleine is 9 weeks on Thursday!
Hi my baby has severe reflux she was put on nutramigen milk, she did get worse whilst she got used to the milk but after 8 days she doubled her milk intake, she still has reflux though unfortunately! So prob best if you stick with it for the 2 weeks. good luck x
