LittleRefluxers

Hi there, I'm new to this site and very heartened (but sympathetic) to see that so many others are going through the reflux nightmare we're in. My 10-week old daughter has been through the usual gamut of meds for silent reflux - gaviscon, ranitidine and now omeprazole (we got the suspension after being advised by a pharmacist friend that the capsules are less effective. All was great for a week/10 days after starting the omeprazole suspension, only to start going down hill again since Sunday. We've had a full day and two evenings of screaming, with a couple of better days inbetween. Has anyone else experienced this sort of pattern? We did notice that the Ranitidine lost its effect after a short time but wern't prepared for a relapse on Losec. I'd be really grateful to hear any advice/comments/shared experiences. Liz

My daughter tried ranitidine and after a month of doing great, she went downhill, effect of it just wore off. So she was then put on omeprazole, but the capsule and this has been brilliant, i was told that the liquid form wasnt as good and also a nightmare with having to keep in fridge etc. Have you thought about trying the tablet form??
hi i also have been told the liquild form has a shelf life and isnt as effective not to doubt your friend but i was told this by two pharmacists in my area because of the process of making it into a liquild form my lo is on losec mups which i dissolve in water about 5mls to 10 mls shes older so i mix this with fruit puree but you can use a 1ml syringe to gather up the little balls she has been a different baby since beening on this for now about 10wks the radnitdine needed constantly adjusting with her weight but this has not needed to be once a maternity nurse from great ormond st also came on here and said she has dealt with hundreds of reflux babes and the liquild form was the least effective the mups the best in her experience its worth a try.x
Did you carry on with the ranitidine when you started the omeprazole. We overlapped them for two weeks and that worked. my daughter now on both which also worked.
We stopped the r'dine initially (on hv's instructions) but with disastrous consequences so i kept giving it to her till the om'zole kicked in. Since things got bad again i've been asking the gp/hv whether i can give r'dine also. They said it wouldn't make any difference; instead they recommended putting gaviscon into expressed bottles. Today and y'day have been terrible at times, with full-out screaming. Think it's worth trying the r'dine anyway?
Hi,

you can give the ranitidne and omeprazole together both medicines do slightly different things, the omeprazole is stopping the acid production but the ranitidine is a neutraliser, so it will help to neutralise what ever else is been refluxed. We had alot of trouble with the meds, omeprazole didn't agree with my daughter but we didn't know this till when we stopped it for tests and then she improved, ranitidine worked alot better for us. Have you thought about dairy intolerence and trying a special milk like neocate, that had this biggest effect for us, it stopped my daughters screaming and squirming the most out of everything.

Also have you been offered domperidone? that has helped us, it works by strenghing the stomach and helping food go the right way, I didn't think it was doing anything at first but when I stopped it I realised it's use!

Hi Lisa,

When you say omeprazole didnt agree with your daughter - what kind of symptoms did she exhibit?  Looking at my diary I think my son has been more grumbly throughout the day and having more screaming fits since the omeprazole kicked in.  Could just be his age and the reflux getting worse but does make me wonder.  Have given him ranitidine before and felt it was making him more sick but now think maybe that was just CMPI showing up as he got a bit older as he has been so much less sick since I cut out dairy.  Not sure whether to go back on the ranitidine instead x x

just realised this post is really old! x
Hi, I believe that you can take om'zole and r'dine at the same time, but there must be 4 hrs between them, otherwise the r'dine stops the om'zole working
Hi there, my little boy is now 22 months and we've just stopped final medication (Omeprazole) - fingers crossed he seems ok so far. When his reflux was at its worst he took all three medication - Domperdone (ideally 20mins before a meal, I think 4 x a day - can't quite remember!), ranitidine (twice daily) and Omeprazole, twice daily. We had the Omeprazole tablet which we dissolved in water rather than the suspension - which is what our constultant recommended.

There weren't any issues with taking them together, but Omeprazole is the strongest. Also Domperidone the one which helped most with being sick.

Do they have the 10mg tablets in stock? You could give 2 to make up the 20mg dose. Without a prescription they won't give you an alternative PPI, but the pharmacist may be able to give you a different strength tablet. Jen x
