Hi
We saw the paediatrician this evening who has prescribed carobel and omeprazole. Harry is currently on Gaviscon with partially hydrolysed formula. He says we are to switch to a normal formula which I am a bit apprehensive about (I still think this is a case of cmpi).
He has scheduled a review meeting for 10 days time but the earliest I will get the prescription is Monday afternoon - so we will have 1 week of the new drugs before we go back. Is that long enough for Omeprazole to take effect?
Harry's main issue is vomiting rather than pain - has anyone experienced Omeprazole lessening vomitting episodes?
Also, he said Omeprazole comes in tablet form. how the heck am I meant to get him to take it???
Thanks ladies.

He didn't spit it out so that's a good start but it didn't seem to want to dissolve fully, there were still little white lumps in it which when I got to the end of the syringe just pressed up together so had to suck up some more water so he got it all. Not sure if it was a probelm using cold water - do others use lukewarm water?
Hi Laura
Presumably his Omeprazole is the Losec Mups version (which my son has been on for over 2yrs) & is good stuff! It won't dissolve fully as the tablets contain tiny balls of medicine which have a gastric resistant coating. You sound like you're doing a fab job of giving it to him, just make sure you continue to get all of the bits in him as they are the medicine. If you gently tap the nurofen syringe before giving it can help to keep the balls suspended in the water or unstick them from the inside of the syringe.
Permalink Reply by amanda on February 13, 2012 at 20:22 Hello, my grandson has been on Omeperazole for 8 days for 6 days the dose was only 5mg, on Sat we increased it to 5mg twice daily, we increased it becausethe 5mg once daily did not appear to be helping him a great deal. Ladies on this site also thought the dose was rather low! So it is early days for us to say whether it is work or not so I guess we do have to wait a little while longer. If you believe your little one is CMPI then push for Neocate, the dr's can be reluctant to prescribe it because it is very expensive, go armed with your evidence to back up your rationale to trial him on this formula.
Again from my experience some peadiatrician's have much better knowledge of reflux than others! My grandson has seen 3 peaditricians in his short 9 week life. One discharged him from A&E with colic - another diagnosed colic and prescribed paracetamol and gaviscon (no mention of reflux) and discharged him back to GP. A third diagnosed we believe correctly reflux but told us to put him back on regular formula, which we did not agree with believing tha he too has CMPI we pushed our GP for Neocate. It is our intention to get a Peadiatrician for Noah who specialises in gastroentrology which is what all babies diagnosed with this condition should surely have?
Noah does vomit but not a great deal, his problem is pain++++++
Good luck Amanda.

Permalink Reply by Rebecca Murphy on February 13, 2012 at 20:34 We give our lo omeprazole with puree, if using water i would imagine warmer water would work a little better, I think what you did, drawing up more water to get the last little bit is perfect, I am sure i have read on here other people recommending to do that, think it has also been recommended to use neurofen syringe as seems to make things easier, sorry if you already knew this! Fingers crossed the omeprazole works bec x

When we went to the baby show when I was pregnant we got some of the nurofen sygringes for free and took more than we were meant to - who would have known how useful they have come in since!!
