LittleRefluxers

Hi all-any advice or guidance would be much appreciated.  My lo has been diagnosed with severe GERD.

My lo was started om 5mg of omeprazole on Sat as ranitidine didn't work.  Could anyone tell me how soon after starting the drug did they see an improvement in symptoms?  I have to open up a 10mg capsule and mix it with 10ml of bicarbonate of soda, I then draw up 5ml of solution and mix with small amount of milk.  Reading websites this seems to contradict what manufacturers say - they say DO NOT dissolve capsule as once hits stomach acid it will be inactivated and should remain in little beads so can reach small intestine where it is absorbed.  Does anyone else administer it this way and if so does it still work?!?!?!?!?!?  I don't want to go through hell of trying to give it to lo (she hates it!) if it is ineffective.  Please any help on this would be great Emx

My lo is on Omeprazole and I was told it can take upto 4 weeks to take full effect but we started to notice an improvement within a week although I would say it took 4 weeks for it to take full effect. We use Losec Mups which are the tablets, they dissolve in water and the medication remains in little balls which I then mix in a little of my lo porridge or you can syringe it, we have always used the tablets and were told by the pharmacist it is the best form to use, you can also get it in suspension but it has to be specially ordered by the pharmacist and has a shelf life. I have never used the capsules and there was a post on here a couple of weeks ago which said they should not be used in children I would check if you can get your Omeprazole either in suspension or in tablets.

Hope this helps.

Hi Wendy, thanks for the information. I have rang gp this morning and he is putting up px for losec mups which i'm collecting soon. Do you give it once daily, am or pm? I have no faith in the medical proffesion anymore, my GP agreed shouldn't be giving capsules:-(.My lo is 9 weeks old, is it best I just syringe in with water? Thanks again x
Hi Emma/ My little one changed from Ranitadine to Omeprozole the same. I found it worked after around a weeks ish. We where given the mups (tablet form) I dissolve it in a little bit of boiling hot water and when cooled suck it up a syringe and give it, it does taste horrible and I was told any problems she could have a little bit of yoghurt of neat jucie to mix it with. I found it to be good stuff. The suspension is harder to get, more expencive and only has a short shelf life. It's also not as affective x.
Hi Belinda, thanks for reply - oh right I will try that then. So just small amount of water and then syringe in. Does the whole tablet dissolve including coating? x
Emma

I give it once a day first thing in the morning, ideally you should try and give it 30 mins before a feed for it to work properly but that is not always possible. We did give a morning & evening dose at one point in the hope that it would help his sleeping but it made no difference at all so I just give it in the monring as I remember to do it better. All you have to do is dissolve it in water like Belinda says and syringe it in, if you have a Nurofen or Dentinox syringe they work better as the hole is bigger and the little balls of medication come out better. My little man will take it by syringe or with yogurt/porridge etc but obviously your little one is a bit young for that.

Hope it works better for you as for us it was the miracle medication we needed and we didn't get it until 5 months!

Keep in touch.

The whole tablet does dissolve including the coating and just leaves you with some tiny balls, these are the actual medication so need to be whole and you need to get as many in as you can.

Sorry Belinda to answer your question

Thanks a lot Wendy, thats great. I gave first dose yesterday, unfortunately a few white beads came out and then lo brought a slight amount up but most went in. Great idea about bigger syringe. I'm just praying it helps her, everyone seems to have such good things to say about it. Poor you and little one having to cope for 5 months, I don't know why the docs don't seem to take this condition seriously. My nan suffers from reflux and is on omeprazole and if she doesn't take it she is in awful pain, like a heart attack! Emx
Hi all, well my 8 week old daughter has just started on Omeprazole tablets 10mg which i disolove in 5mg water and use a syinge. Her reflux is bad today so im hoping the meds work soon as not sure i can take another 4 weeks of this.
Hi Emma, I was given Omerprazole for my daughter last Tuesday, we didn't even know she had reflux but during a visit to the dietician, where she was also diagnosed as having an allergy to Cows Milk Protein and changed formula, I mentioned that one of her symptoms were that she arches her back and was told this is apparantely a symptom of silent reflux (she doesn't spit up much) and given Omeprazole. I was given medicine 2.5mg and a little syringe thing. My daughter is only ten weeks. The pharmicist told me to hold her upright, slightly tilted back and squirt it to the side of her mouth not the centre. My husband and I noticed yesterday that she has stopped arching her back already so around 4 days for improvement. Good luckxx PS I was also told not to add it to the milk due to the temperature that the medicine needs to be kept at (in the fridge)
Hi Sarah, I hope the meds work for your lo, has she been started on 10mg? Good luck. Thanks Lara for input, things may be improving for us on the reflux side but my lo passed a very mucousy motion yesterday that contained blood so i'm not sure what is going on. Hospital says may be the omeprazole, waiting on stool sample results now! x
Hi Emma

I just wondered if your lo is on cows milk protein based milk? Sorry, but my lo had that at 8 days and dietician said she would have known then that she was allergic to cows milk protein
