Nutramigen AA - Problems
Hi everyone,
I'm new here and appear to be having exactly the same problems as everyone else. I have a ten week old daughter who has had problems with feeding since her first formula bottle (ended up in neo natal unit overnight with blood in her poop). My health visitor, gp etc put it down to the wrong formula (C&G Comfort) and told me to try Aptamil. To cut a long story short this has been going on since she was 8 days old and we were eventually told she has colic and would grow out of it (I hate the word colic, easy thing for GP's to say rather than find out what is wrong). We have tried Aptamil, Cow & Gate Comfort, she was then wrongly diagnosed as lactose intolerant and given SMA lactose free, nightmare milk!!!, she was then back on Aptamil, Pepti Junior, back on Aptamil, given Infacol, Gripe water, Dentinox, Fennel tea, we visited a Crainial Therapist etc before I finally demanded to see a dieticain.
She was finally diagnosed as suffering from Cows milk protein allergy and reflux and given Omeprazole (not sure if thats how its spelt) and Nutramigen AA. The fantastic news is that most of her symptoms have disappeared ie Tummy cramps, arching her back, constant leg kicking, and crying for most of the day. She now appears to be suffering from trapped wind, which is making her scream a very high pitched, shrill scream (especially worse when pooping).
I have seen that some of the mums here have tried Nutramigen, but not noticed if it's Nutramigen AA. And does anyone have any experiences of the AA?
I have to say that she did manage to poop this morning without any screaming (then however screamed holy murder when put in the bath which she normally loves). The Nutramigen AA seems to be one of the most hydrolised formulas out there and I have to say for parents it has taken away all of the above symptoms, but the trapped wind is worrying me as she still appears to be very unsettled when awake, this is day 4 of being on this exclusively, am I not giving it enough time?

Sorry to butt in, I just wanted to add that my lo was put on Nutramigen aa at the beginning of March and it has only been in the last two weeks I would say that the milk and meds have had effect. I was told that it should be working to the best of its abilty within 4 weeks, but to be honest - I think it depends on how long they have gone untreated and the damage that's done to their little tummys in this time. It has really taken around 9 weeks for the milk to digest properly ie poops are finally normal and she has finally calmed down a little, I genuinely believe that the damage that was done to my lo's insides during the time of being untreated caused the problems xx

i have to agree totally with this! we are settling down okay too, Brody doesnt need any meds along with the aa, he is soping just fine, sometimes he will struggle a little trying to do a poo but he manages, i dont want to introduce anything else to complicate things further, he is 18 weeks now, my 2 year old was 6 1/2 months before anyone diagnosed him and we had a terrible time with him, thankfully he has completely outgorwn it now!

Hi there, can i ask just out of sheer curiousity..... ive seen 2 or 3 folks talking about lanzoprazole and omeprazole..... what are they?

ah ok thanks for that susie! thankfully we dont seem to be having reflux probs, i think wev escaped compared to lots of others who are experiencing the same!

my son has been having the same problems your discribing, it finally took the health professionals 10 weeks to diagnosis him. He started on nutramigen 1 which solved the problem for 6 weeks and we were then back to the beginning, we were very lucky and had a dietitain as soon as he was diagnosised and she suggested changing his milk i was reluctant at first but i wanted what was best for my son so we have tried nutramigen aa and i have to say some of the symptoms have resolved, but he still continues to have problems when going to poo, if has now been started on lactose with very little effect. if your still having probs ive found pestering your health visitor and gp seem to get results. i have noticed your little one is on omperazole does that help with the reflux as mine is using rantidine and he is continuing to have severe reflux and i spend most of my time clearing up sick

How old is your lo?
Nicole is now 8 months, and on the whole doing really well. The Omeprazole is fantastic, but it took for Nicole to have Ranitidine and Domperidone added too to make a difference. She was on lactulose for a while but I found sometimes it helped, sometimes it didn't and she has been moved on to movicol. Since she's been on this she's been much much better.

Glad it's helping Abbey. how much of it is she being given? Nicole's on half a sachet twice daily, she's going mostly once a day, but sometimes missing a day,

owain is now 7 months and is still experiencing difficulties, im now waiting to see my gp again this week as his poo has got generally worse and is hardly going when he manages to go its solid i really dont understand how he passes it. im going to ask if he can be put onto omperazole and movical as reading through this discussion im seeing there is a diffeence when these medicines ar being given.

My litlle one up until 6 p.m. today dare i say had a reasonably good day ( omeprazole increased since yesterday - so i remain hopeful) also on ranitidine and domperidone (have been told by gastric chap to wean her off domperidone so only had one dose at 4 ish) - then all hell broke loose! ( didn't help i suppose that she was sick after her second omep dose). She started her bottle, tried to break wind and like your little one screamed - a very high pitched noise which seems to be a pattern when she needs to poo, pass wind etc. She went on nutramigen following 1st trip to paediatrician, then they switched her to Neocate as she still had lots of problems - she has been on that just over two weeks and the gastric chap we have been seeing in meantime may switch her back to Nutramigen and not Nutramigen AA. He said Neocate had a lot of fat in it which could make things sluggish and that is why he will switch to Nutramigen if no improvements are seen on our current plan of action. I imagine neocate and Nutr AA are similiar.
If the switch goes ahead to Nutramigen I will keep you posted on how it goes! I am not too convinced about Neocate!
I am going to baby massage next week to specifically ask how to deal with trapped wind!!
Sorry i do not have experience of NUT AA but my problems seem similiar with Neocate.
