LittleRefluxers

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and appear to be having exactly the same problems as everyone else.  I have a ten week old daughter who has had problems with feeding since her first formula bottle (ended up in neo natal unit overnight with blood in her poop).  My health visitor, gp etc put it down to the wrong formula (C&G Comfort) and told me to try Aptamil.  To cut a long story short this has been going on since she was 8 days old and we were eventually told she has colic and would grow out of it (I hate the word colic, easy thing for GP's to say rather than find out what is wrong).  We have tried Aptamil, Cow & Gate Comfort, she was then wrongly diagnosed as lactose intolerant and given SMA lactose free, nightmare milk!!!, she was then back on Aptamil, Pepti Junior, back on Aptamil, given Infacol, Gripe water, Dentinox, Fennel tea, we visited a Crainial Therapist etc before I finally demanded to see a dieticain.

She was finally diagnosed as suffering from Cows milk protein allergy and reflux and given Omeprazole (not sure if thats how its spelt) and Nutramigen AA.  The fantastic news is that most of her symptoms have disappeared ie Tummy cramps, arching her back, constant leg kicking, and crying for most of the day.  She now appears to be suffering from trapped wind, which is making her scream a very high pitched, shrill scream (especially worse when pooping).

I have seen that some of the mums here have tried Nutramigen, but not noticed if it's Nutramigen AA.  And does anyone have any experiences of the AA?

I have to say that she did manage to poop this morning without any screaming (then however screamed holy murder when put in the bath which she normally loves).  The Nutramigen AA seems to be one of the most hydrolised formulas out there and I have to say for parents it has taken away all of the above symptoms, but the trapped wind is worrying me as she still appears to be very unsettled when awake, this is day 4 of being on this exclusively, am I not giving it enough time?

Thank you so much for your response, think I'm just getting worried as we seem to have gotten rid of three symptoms and gained another one.

Thanks again

Hi Lara, my dauughter who is also 10 weeks old seems to have travelled down same route as yours. She is on omeprazole 5mg and been on nutrigamen for nearly 4 weeks. Haven't really seen an improvement on the milk, it's not the aa one but will prob be changed soon. She suufers from terrible wind now and seems to get bad stomach cramps where she brings her legs up and head forward. She seems more settled on the omeprazole but (and I have posted question about this) has passed a mucousy/bloody motion so sending sample off - may be the meds. It shouldn't be the milk as is the most easily digested on market I believe. She has had a few episodes of screaming after passing a motion which I find strange also. If anything the milk may have made subtle changes between 2-3 weeks but only slight. Apologies for spelling, still very bleary eyed Emx
Sorry again Emma, just opened this message, my lo has been given the Nutramigen aa, apparantely the Nutramigen works on about 90% of babies but the aa is more broken down

Hi all

I have a 2 year old and a 16 week old who both have cows milk protein allergy, my 2 year old was fine with just regular Nutramigen and can now tolerate "normal" milk and foods, my 16 week old was not able to have this milk, i recognised the similar symptoms very early on in feeding due to my elder child experiencing the same, i had been back and forward, being sent away like a neurotic mother! told it was wind, given colic remedies, and gaviscon, i persisted until i was referred to pediatric unit where low and behold... they tell me what i already know, he has the same, we tried the Nutramigen but his symptoms didnt clear up, with both of mine it wasnt vomiting but severe diahorrrea and really offensive smelling (having to cut off clothes) and this continued in my youngest even with the Nutramigen, we have been on the Nutramigen AA for almost 4 weeks now and at first it was really difficult to feed him as he wouldnt drink it, even although normal nutramigen tastes horrid anyway, nutramigen aa tastes and smells even worse, but slowly we are getting there, he doesnt seem to have any trouble with wind so far and he poops easily, they are always soft and unformed but stay contained within the nappy and dont smell quite so horrid as before - im hoping this is the result!

Hi Nicky, did your little ones suffer from reflux symptoms and if so have you tried meds or has the milk been enough to resolve the problems? x
Hi there

No my little ones didnt have reflux - well i say that, Brody, my youngest did suffer a little with it but Gaviscon cured that very quickly, it has always just been the really bad diahorrea with them both and the milk has tamed it for now, we still just take each day as it comes though because as i said weve only been on the AA for a few weeks, never say never...... x
I have to say that Samuel is more constipated on AA than he was on normal Nutramigen. He's suffered with really bad wind for such a long time, I don't think he takes any notice anymore! I know by the amount of wind he has during the day whether it's going to be a good night or a bad night. I used to worry about it too and went back on the gripe water and it just seemed to clear itself up a bit and he doesn't get it as often. I also noticed that when he is in a bad mood and has a tantrum (yes, my 10 month old has terrible tantrums!!!), his wind just gets worse. When he gets really annoyed about something he gets really bad wind. He has a tantrum, his cry turns it that high pitched scream and then I hear wind. Crazy but true!!! Some adults suffer from really bad trapped wind when they are stressed so maybe Nicole is so stressed out with all this reflux, she's winding herself up and it's affecting her tummy. It's like when we get tummy ache when we're worried about something. It might sound totally mad but I think this is what happens to Samuel. His favourite doc mentioned it to me and I thought she was crazy but it now totally makes sense. But then other times he gets really bad trapped wind when silly mummy feeds him pear on an empty tummy!
its so reasurring reading your comment, my son kiegan 9 mths old has had problems since he was born and the doctors put it down to colic, he screamed for 3 weeks solid until we had really had enough, they changed his milk from the sma gold we was giving to nutramigen but he had severe diahorrea but they told us to keep him on it for a few weeks then changed him to the aa, he then turned constipated but the bloody stools and sickness stopped! they put it down to cows milk protein allergy and acid reflux, he also had a hernia!! he also gets bad trapped wind and like yrself i notice he has temper tantrums and im glad u think its related to all the wind as i think the same!!! kiegan has been to doctors, hospital and dietican but they really dont listen and i have recently weaned him onto milk and have not had any problems with sickness or painful screams so we changed his milk back to cow and gate and he has infact slept better and was able to poop easier so we actually think he just has acid reflux and trapped wind! a 9 month torture for him but i agree that aa is not the best milk !!!
hi.
i have 2 lo's, a 26 month old who had relfux as a baby so was on gaviscon in bottles and has grown out of this now and a 23week old who has recently been diagnosed with milk protein and lactose intolerance. this is after several months of struggling! she struggled putting on weight and only weighs 13lb 8oz when weighed this last week. shes still newborn clothes and babygros and her skin was in constantly bad condition.
I have lactose intolerance and my mum had milk protein allergy
after 3 weeks of struggling to breastfeed and not gaining weight i put her on aptamil. but this made her severely ill!!! she got a really bad rash all over her face- severe exma looking, projectile vomiting and expolsive dihoreea (not sure of spelling!) so i took her off this and gave her hipp organic. she seemed fine on this except reflux so was given gaviscon like her sister.
then after a month or so she started with a d n v bug n never really recovered! the hv diagnosed lactose intolerance and gave us some colief drops to add to milk to help. these worked for all of 2wks before getting even worse.
at her worst she constantly had colds and chest / throat infections, her tummy would bloat so much i couldnt put her nappies on as i couldnt get them to fasten, she would scream with pain and not sleep. vomiting constantly and foamy bright yellow horrid smelling nappies. iv had to throw alot of her clothes as they got ruined!
finaly we got reffered to the hospital where very quickly she was diagnosed and then prescribed nutramigen aa.
all i can say is she smells like potatoes now!!! when she finally got used to the milk, she seemed to improve within a few days, her nappys becoming more green and normal and no bloating or wind. shes started to fill out more but still not gaining much weight yet.
but this last 3days or so her nappies have got worse again, smelling worse than before and going more yellow than green again. and her reflux has come back as i was told to give aa exclusivly and no gaviscon. i was wondering if anyone had any ideas...its still a fornight till shes being reviewed!

any help is greatly appreciated!!

hi there

god you seem to be having terrible troubles! Apparently if you find that the AA doesnt do the trick they put you back on normal nutramigen, there is no other milk available in such a hydrolised form. i have to say we have now been on AA for about 3-4 weeks and yes maybe he pumps a little more than normal but he has no trouble with his bowels atall, he goes regularly every day, soft but never runny and not half as smelly and awful as they were on normal nutramigen, i am feeding him now too and he is having no problems atall and is steadily gaining weight, at the last check he was 15lb 9oz and 17 weeks which is MUCH better than my 2 year old who had the same problems (he has now completely outgrown it) ever did with weight gain, they do say that babies can become constipated on the AA milk but that will settle down and not to introduce anytyhing to try and cure it as most medicines contain milk protein? its strange how there seems to be so many different treatments/stories about this milk? hope you get some answers

Hi, I'm new on here but my daughter has a similar story to yours. She is now on nutramigen aa and lanzoprazole and seems well so long as the dose is increased as her weight does. I had a really good doctor who changed her milk to this immediately but the omeprazole wasn't enough for her, if u think the omeprazole isn't strong enough lanzoprazole is the strongest there is which may be worth a go. My little lady has a ph study next week (a tube up her nose and down her throat to the entrance of her stomach to measure acid levels for at least 24hr, this is the only way to fully diagnose silent acid reflux) and I have to stop her meds 72 hrs before so its gonna be like starting from scratch :( but at least we will have a definate diagnosis :)
