LittleRefluxers

Our daughter Evie is now 8 weeks old and in our opinion has been suffering with silent reflux since birth although at that stage we didn't know what reflux was. Midwife/HV all fobbed us off with colic and we tried every remedy under the sun to try and help, after that failed we started to look on the internet for advice and that's when we read up on reflux. Evie was showing all the usual symptoms, fussing at feeding, arching back and neck, comfort feeding throughout the day, unexplained screaming, only sleeping when held, waking after a few mins if laid flat in moses basket/cot, frequent hiccups etc etc etc.... We tried changing her formula from Aptimil 1st to Easy Digest (BF had been abandoned due to her constant and difficult feeding) which seemed to help slightly but still showing many symptoms and seeming to be in a great deal of pain.

Anyway we finally visited the doctor about 2 weeks ago to explain the situation and ask for a prescription for Gaviscon. He was not convinced that Evie had reflux and again put it down to colic, but I was persistant and in the end he prescribed a small amount of Gaviscon for us to try. Evie was like a different baby immediately and the reflux symptoms are much improved, however the Gaviscon has caused terrible constipation. Although she is now settling better at night the daytimes are terrible with her straining and crying/screaming in agony all the time she is awake. When she does eventually have a poo (1 a day at the moment) they are very firm. Have been back to the doctors and he has prescribed some senna liquid, which she has been taking since yesterday, however so far it doesn't seem to be helping. It's a nightmare, like going round in circles....

Asked the doctor about a referral to the hospital but he said it wasn't worth it!!! Also asked about other medication instead of the Gaviscon and he said there's nothing else, although from reading oher posts it seems there are other things which can be prescribed. I get the impression that the HV/Doctor doesn't really know much about Silent Reflux as he keeps having to refer to his book - not very encouraging really. It's difficult to know what to do next....

It's awful seeing Evie in pain all of the time, she gave he 1st smiles last week but they are few and far between at the moment because of all the pain - poor thing. Anyway it is nice to know that there are other people out there going though the same thing, I have friends/family with babies but they are all trouble free and don't really know what it is like. Very hard work is what it is like and some days I feel at the end of my tether!!!

Sorry for the long rambling post - nice to get it off my chest x x

As mentioned in my post, I had an agonising wait of 6 months before someone would listen, I was sick of being told hes just a sicky baby, hes just a crier, its colic etc. In the end I went to the extreme and went to A&E! Thankfully I saw a Paed and problem solved. He is now a happy little boy at long last. He is on Ranitidine, Infant Gaviscon and Carobel and they have worked absolute wonders. I am still seething though that no one would listen. My GP/HV are useless and Ive actually changed Dr's since as I am so upset with them.

You MUST MUST keep going on and on to the Dr/Hv until they listen, if all else fails, go to A&E, where they ahve to listen.

Good luck.
Thank you for your replies. My hubby has taken the afternoon off work so we're going to take Evie back to the docs, hubby's a bit more pushy than me so hopefully we'll get somewhere - I hope so!!!
Ask for ranitidine and domperidon at the docs hun they work best together and they are very good and can also be used with gaviscon if necessary - also insist on being referred to a paed as they are the ones who specialise in this
That's the plan, seems lots of people have had success with that combination. Thank you
Doctors appointment went well, so glad hubby came with me - he' much better at these things!!! The Doctor phoned the on call paed at the hospital to ask for some advice and we have now been prescribed some ranitidine to try. The paed also told the doctor that he could prescrbe domperidon if necessary so Doc has told us to come back if no results.

Evie has had her first dose tonight so fingers crossed we will see some results soon, I really hope so!!!
