LittleRefluxers

Hi guys, just a quick hello to everyone, and how wonderful to see this website. My daughter Savannah was born on 17/07/09 at 36 weeks, i knew from about 10 days old something was wrong, she was arching her back constantly, making straining noises, screaming all day, and not taking feeds very well. After trying about 4 different milks, 6 sessions with a chiropractor, Savannah was still no better, and i was still being told she was a naughty baby, and maybe its colic. By this time i had hit rock bottom, i suffered with PND, i was very depressed and unable to bond with my baby. It was only when the HV came and saw the state i was in that something got done, i had stated from the beginning that i thought Savannah had silent reflux, but this was scoffed at by my G.P who told me again that it was colic. After an emergency pediatric appointment, she was diagnosed with silent reflux, by this time she was three months old. So far we have seen 3 different pediatricians who have turned out to be useless. There is no consistency with the pediatricians, the one i saw yesterday got her name wrong, started trelling me how to treat her colic, and reccomended i give her weetabix to sort her bowels out. Weetabix at 6 months!! I have been apalled with the lack of knowledge, healthcare providers know regarding reflux, and i have found most things out by researching myself. Savannah is on domperidone, ranitidine, and we have just stopped the gaviscon. I am starting her on SMA follow on milk today, after tring soya milk, comfort milk, cow and gate, aptimal etc. She still has reflux symptoms, we have 5 good days, then 2 bad days, and she has never slept through the night. Well thats me, nice to meet you all. xxxx

Sorry you have been messed around so much. I often feel like I know more than the paediatricians. We have also seen loads of them so there is no consistency. Hope weanign helps. It hasn't helped Josie :(
Sorry to hear about what you've been going through. We luckily got referred quickly to a paed after I told the docs to (they also told me Samuel had colic as he wasn't being sick or losing weight). He was put on meds eventhough I had asked them for a hypoallergenic milk before trying the meds as I was convinced he was lactose intollerant but he didn't display the right symptoms. Cut long story short, I finally got the milk I wanted when he was 4 1/2 months and that seemed to make him better. Have you tried Nutramigen AA and considered that your little one might have a cow's milk protein allergy? A lot of reflux cases are linked to allergies. Samuel took to weaning very well and we weaned him at 16 weeks but he can't have any dairy. He loves his solids so much but doesn't take enough milk so I've reduced his intake slightly. Have you read Gina Ford's weaning book?. I'm not pro Gina Ford at all but her weaning book is brilliant and will guide you through what to do.

Hope this helps and good luck :)
Hi ya my daughter was diagnosed at 5 wks old after she stopped breathing and turned blue. We went through loads of tests, bloods Barium swollow, heart/head scan's, E.E.G, but they all come back norm, just reflux. I have been lucky with the consultant iv'e had, can you not be referred to a consultant or specialist at your local hospital.
I understand that gut instinct that there is some thing wrong, at 12 hours old I told the midwifes at the hospital there was some thing wrong, she would scream after every feed. Hipacritical woman stated she's just hungry and tried to take her off for a further feed, (stupid xxxxx) I stated I thought it was the milk, so this was changed, no different.
demanded a lactoes intolarence test. (came back negative) She is now 17 months old and has a dairy free diet due to dairy intolarence, since 14 months old, (always check out that gut feeling, NO one knows your baby like you).
It is true loads of health profs dont understand reflux,, both my G.P and Health visit have stated they dont know enough about it to help me, and left me in the capable hands of the hospital.
I weaned my daughter at 20 wks and it did help. She refused milk at 5 months old, and was fed on fromage fraise instead. But always loved her grub.
She still never slept through the night and again there seemed to be some thing I couldn't put my finger on.
At 16 months we went Wheat/gluten free as an intolarence, and I had my first ever TWO FULL NIGHTS SLEEP.
She is still on meds but only a few, 2.5mg Omeprazole and 2ml of liquid Gaviscon a day.
Reading these posts lots of babies are still having milks/follow on ect... ? My daughter has had none since 5 months old, she hates the stuff. Her dietition has stated that the foods she eats gives her enough calcium.
I think she must be the only one x
No she is not babe my LO drinks a couple of Oz milk a day and thats her lots (half an oz at a time) she eats fromage frais and cheese and has a vitamin supplement with calcium in it - I just have to hope that enough for her

Touch wood through she seems a lot happier now, sleeps great and is such a sweet little thing

I got so cross with the treatment of babies with reflux and their parents - I was so lucky - my GP knew about it and prescribed the meds at 3 weeks and then got me a paed app within 1 week of my first appointment - from then on the hospital would see me the same day if I rang up

However thats what we should all expect and receive - it was hard enough to go through with the support - we should not have to fight for reasonable support for our children should we??

Ok Rant over - soap box away xxx
Hi Anthea,

I am from Walsall also and have been in and out of the peadiatrics department at Manor hospital with my LO since he was 8 weeks old. He is now 16 weeks old. He was refusing his feeds from 5 weeks old. At his 8-check up with the GP he was referred to the peadiatric department at Manor Hospital the same day and was diagnosed with acid reflux.
He is also currently on gaviscon, domperidone and ranitidine. We ended up in hospital again yesterday and he almost had a tube put up his nose to try and get some neocate in him to see if he has a milk protein intolerance. (neocate is an anti-allergenic formula). Luckily he did drink 1 1/2oz of the Neocate at the hospital and we avoided the tube. I have been feeding him the Neocate today so will see how it goes over the next week. If this doesn't work they might put him on omeprazole.

If you fancy meeting up for a chat, let me know. We could meet for a coffee somewhere in town centre.
