LittleRefluxers

New Member - A few questions you might be able to help me with?

Hi,

I have just joined the site since my 15 week old son has been diagnosed with acid reflux. He is on Gaviscon, Domperidone and Ranitidine.

He is currently also teething (his two bottom front teeth) and has had a terrible caugh for 2 weeks now, so the poor boy is going through a lot of pain. I am giving him Calpol to try and help the pain and wait for the caugh to pass.

I have a few questions people might be able to help me with:
1. Is it best to give the Ranitidine before or after a feed?
2. Can Domperidone and Ranitidine be given on the same feed or can they cancel each other out? Hence shall I give them on alternating feeds?
3. There is an incline the reflux could be caused by a cow's milk protein intolerance and he was prescribed Neocate, however he refused to drink it (it stinks and I think he doesn't like the taste). Any tips on getting him to drink it?

4. Anyone from the Birmingham area out there and fancy meeting up?

Look forward to your replies!

Hi Hannah,

I will try and help - my dd is almost 10 months and is on the same meds as your son.

1. How many times a day is he on Ranitidine? It shouldn't really matter if you give it before or after, as it's not as time sensitive as the Domperidone.

2. Personally, I give dd the Domperidone 20 min before her feed, and the Ranitidine after.

3. My dd refused to drink any milk, as either they smell horrible or made her sick! Have you tried doing half and half with normal formula? It might help him get used to the taste. Also push your dr to get your son allergy tested. (we're currently waiting for dd's tests results to come back).

I hope all this helps!!!

Hi ya my daughter was diagnosed with server silent relfux at 5 wks old and given a lactoes intol test, however it came back negative, (she's now 17 months old and dairy intolarent). At 5 wks she was put on Ranitadine until 2 months old which I then found stopped working, I use give it before a feed.
She was then given Omeprozole 20mg, once in a morning at the same time every day, (helped loads).
Gaviscon infant that you add to bottles with every feed, How ever she was never very keen and stopped having any milk at 5 months, down right refused any and all milk. Wont touch soya or rice milk even now. She would eat yoghurt which I use to have to give her loads instead of milk. (mad or what)..
Once she stopped bottles I was given Gaviscon advance liquid, GREAT stuff helped 100% and she still takes 2ml a day even now.
Domperidone I gave her at same time every day 8am with breakfast, 2pm with a yoghurt and 9pm with a yoghurt I found if its given to close together then it causes green poo and terrible tummy cramps.
Live in Wolves chuck no Brum.
Hope some of this helps
Thanks Marnie and Belinda,

I give 2ml Domperidone 4 times a day and 1ml Ranitidine 3 times a day. He's 4 months old next week.
Marnie, what do you mean when you say the Domperidone is time-sensitive? I give it 15 minutes to 30 minutes before the feed. Is that okay?

James has:
- 7am 2ml Domperidone, followed by his bottle at 7.30am, then 1ml Ranitidine after his bottle.
- 10am 2ml Domperidone, followed by his bottle at 10.30 + a little baby rice from a spoon
- 1.30pm 1ml Ranitidine, followed by his bottle at 2pm
- 4.30pm 2ml Domperidone, followed by his bottle at 5pm + a little carrot and potatoe purree
- 6.30pm 1ml Ranitidine, followed by his bottle at 7pm, then bedtime
- 10.30 pm, 2ml Domperidone + dream-feed
- he will then wake for a night feed between 3 and 4am (no medication).

Does that sound about right?? The meds have helped his reflux, but it hasn't gone away and he still has some crazy moments. He also has runny green poo. Do you think I am giving the Domperidone too close together in the morning?

Is the omeprazole better than the ranitidine?

Hi Hannah/

maybe the green poo is cause the 7am and then 10am Domperidone are slightly to close, try changing it see what happens. There is only 3 hrs between doses but you leave 6 1/2 between next one and then 6 hrs before the next, could he not have 2.5ml dose's then you would only have to give him 3 dose not 4. Thats how i managed it with my daughter and the consultant was happy for me to do this.
I found you needed to keep changing the ranitadine dose all the time, so it left me unsure how much to give, and whether it was working. I changed to Omeprozole at 2 months and stayed at the same dose for a long time, lots better.
Im sorry to say this chuck, but the meds dont take the reflux away they only help with the pain. Age and the maturaty of the musle is the only thing that will stop it.
I was told to give ranitidine and domperidone together 20 mins b4 a milk feed

Thats what my paed suggested to make it most effective
So you give Ranitidine and Domperidone at the same time? Like one straight after the other and then feed 20 minutes later?

I might see if I can get the Omeprazole instead. Sounds a lot easier. And from what I've been reading it's more effective? Will also ask the GP if I can cut the Domperidone to 3 times a day.

Sorry again, but did you give Rantidine and Domperidone at the same time three times a say?

Say 7.00am Domperdione and Ranitidine, followed by a feed at 7.20?
10.30 feed with no medication?
1.30pm Domperidone and Ranitidine followed by a feed 20 minutes later
5.00pm feed with no medication
7.00pm Domperdione and Ranitidine, followed by a feed 20 minutes later
10.30pm feed without medication
3.00 or 4.00 night feed without medication.

Does that sound about right?

Hannah x
