LittleRefluxers

Hello all. I'm relatively new to this site and find it very helpful.  My son is 13 weeks and has been snuffly since birth and had a cough and is covered in excema. he has silent reflux and feeding is a real struggle at the minute. only taking 2-3 oz at a time. Well anyway I was getting nowhere with my GP so went privately to see a paediatrician today. He thinks CMPI and has put us on a trial of neocate. Ryan doesn't seem to keen on his first bottle but it is difficult to say as every bottle is a struggle at the minute. We are using MAM anto colic bottles but are not sure which teat size to use with this neocate. Paed told us to drop the gaviscon for now so just neocate and Ranitidine. Deos neocate take a bit of getting used to?? Does it make babies struggle with gas? and does it change thier nappies?

Sorry for all these questions but I'm struggling.

             Thanks Edel

Simple answers... Yes, yes, and yes... But it's wonderful stuff. It's very thin so you'll probably need to go down at least one teat size, especially as you've previously been using thickened milk. Also be were that a previously silent refluxer might actually vomit a bit because it's so thin.
The gassiness will last a couple of weeks. The change of formula might temporarily cause constipation or diarrhoea - completely normal - and neocate poo is often green! Lol!
It tastes revolting to you and I, but once the babies adjust to it they seem to love it.
It can take several weeks to see the full benefit of the improvement so hang on in there xx
Hi Mary
I went down a teat size as its thinner than other milks , but we were told to continue with gaviscon. Neocate does make them more windy for a few days but that should settle. My little boy was more fussy for a few days as the milk was thinner it made his reflux worse until he got used to the consistency , I very nearly went back to his old formula but glad I persevered as he settled very well after a few days and started sleeping through after hourly wakenings!!!
We had to gradually wean Cían onto the milk as he refused point blank to drink it !! Started with 1 scoop neocate to 6 scoops of his old formula and gradually increased over 24 hours..
On the nappies , it makes Cían constipated so I use prunes to help this as he's weaned.

Hope this helps xx
Edel,
The neocate website is really good, especially the faq's, so have a peep. You will want a slowish teat for neocate as it is very thin. My little boy was very snuffly, it is a strong syptom of cmpi. Hopefully the neocate will be the answer for you. Xx

Thanks ladies he took 4 oz of it t 7 and spewed a bit and  seemed to struggle with cramps but is now asleep. fingers crossed this works. Edel

Mary, the cramps maybe wind due to neocate , fingers and toes crossed it is the answer for you xx

We started neocate last Friday, and it's been a rocky road, her reflux is definitely worse (more gulping, more nasal congestion), she's more congested than ever so feeding is a battle, she's refused more bottles than I could tell you, wind / cramps are a huge problem. But we're persevering on the advice of everyone ..... fingers crossed !! Just letting you know that it wont be a quick fix really, but I'm hopeful we can get through the next couple of weeks and hopefully see an improvement.

thanks we are struggling to get Ryan to take his bottles. He is more screamy than ever and reflux seems worse. Excema is looking better today though. I will keep going but am finding it so hard when a 13 week old boy is only taking 2-3 ounces with a lot of effort. I have added gaviscon as It is just too watery without . i might ask for carovel tomorrow and see.  Keep in touch as it is my only saving grace knowing that we are not alone with this. Edel

Hi sorry to be posting again today. We had Ryans 12 week jabs today . he is almost 14 weeks. GP who is normally nice was really off with me. He said its colic and excema and we need to ride it out. he gave me colief !!! I think he is annoyed that I went private and the consultant has rec neocate and GP has to prescribe it. he said that because the ranitidine hasn't made any difference  it must not be silent reflux. I feel so deflated and am glad that I am back to see the consultant in 2 weeks.  Anyway Ryan is only taking 2 oz of neocate at a time. only had 14 oz in total  yesterday and I am soo stressed. Do they eventually up the ounces??? he was only taking small amts of his normal formula for the few days days before he started neocate. I dont think it is taste that is the problem but rather the reflux. Am scared of dehydration.

Had to reply as we're experiencing something very similar, though are about a week ahead. My duaghter stopped feeding from me in the days before we were advised to start neocate, she'd dropped some weight too and was in a lot of pain still, so HV and specialist really forced me to stop feeding her as I was already on a restricted diet.

We'd already started ranitidine and then added neocate. At first she'd only take 2oz of necoate at each feed, then she stopped even that. I've been beside myself with worry the past week. But my dietician said as long as she gets 10oz she will remain hydrated - look for tears (water) when crying, wee in nappy, and check her fontanelle.

Florence is now drinking much more of the neocate, we battled through the 'tiny amounts / no feeding' stage, but this has only been in the past 2 days. I'm still v.v.nervous she'll stop again.

Our specialist thinks it's an intolerance causing severe secondary reflux, my GP says there is very likely to be no intolerance at all and it's 'just' the reflux. Both want to get her stabilised, then specialist wants to stop ranitidine and keep her on neocate, whilst GP wants to stop the neocate and keep her on ranitidine. so that will be my next battle / decision no doubt. If she stabilises (that's a big IF) then i'm going to refuse to change anything for a month, minimum !

Hi Laura, am glad to hear your little one is taking more neocate. We cant get past 2 oz. I was wondering is it really fowl if it get cold as it takes ages to drink those 2 oz??? our paed is keeping us on zantac and neocate for now but thats what GP is grumpy about!!! I know this in NOT colic as Ryan is a good baby and screams only when feeding. My last wee boy had colic so I knoe what its like but this poor feeding and watching my baby in pain is torture for me.

Let me know how things are going for you . Edel

Guys, hang on in there. The small volume is nothing to do with the neocate and everything to do with the fact your little peoples insides take time to heal. Gp's are not keen on prescribing neocate as it is £25 a tin, whereas zantac is about a fiver a bottle! I have a 20 week old under the same consultant as lauras little girl. You are both describing him perfectly at 15 weeks. Now he is taking 5oz bottles with no sign of reflux if handled with care! So there is hope, i promise. He is allergic, which your babies may or may not be, but i cannot believe the difference in him for finding the right medication.
So chins up, and dont worry, my little one has gained 3 months worth of weight in the last 3 weeks, and is visibily catching up with his peers now. Big hugs to you both, xx

Spoke too soon. She's refusing again, after an entire day of good feeds (proving it's not the taste, it's not the milk, she wants to eat but can't). It makes NO sense.

She's full of mucus, sleepy, pale. Worse still is that she's trying to smile under it all but just crumbles. I just feel there's something else going on here but can't get to the root of it.

So sad.
