LittleRefluxers

I'm new to this site but it's excellent.
My 5 month old son has bad reflux, he's on omeprazole (high dosage), carobel and Neocate formula for a milk intolerance. I've been weaning him for 2 weeks now and he's taken to that well, but I just can't get him to drink enough milk. Until weaning him, he would take about 600 ml a day split over about 8 bottles as he just doesn't like the bottle. It can take an hour to get him to drink 70 - 80 ml. Now he's taking quite good volumes of solids he's only been drinking about 350 ml a day. He's sometimes quite contented but other times is unhappy, I'm not sure if this could be teething but also whether it's hunger.
Also the paed dietitian told me to feed him at 2 1/2 hr to 3 hr intervals, but given he takes so little this is impossible, it's more like 2 hr intervals and that's from the start of one feed through to the start of another so he's actually only getting a 1 hr break between feeds.
I've tried changing bottles from white Born Free to coloured NUK ones but that's made no difference.
Does any one have any advice or do I just accept this ?

if you are stll concerned talk to dietician they will work out exactly how much you lo needs
Hello

My five month old drinks about 14 ounces a day if I'm lucky, the most we have ever got her to drink is 22 ounces before weaning. She is on 2 solid meals a day aswell but is having permenant tummy upset so have been advised to just give baby rice. I am worried about the amount she drinks especially with the tummy problems and we have been given a calcium supplement for her to take aswell. She just will not drink and doesn't ever cry for milk I just keep trying to offer her milk every 4 hours. My pead and dietician have told me I'm not allowed to let the feed go longer than about 30 - 40 mins and I'm to just stop if this is happening. They said not to allow her to feed for an hour at a time as this just suits her and will create more problems. It is so difficult though because I worry about the lack of vitamins and minerals she isn't getting due to the low intake of milk but I do have to accept that she isn't going to drink and if I push it she gets upset and I don't want to end up with her refusing the bottle altogether. I use dr brown bottles and the flow is really good and they definately help with wind but they didn't help with her drinking more after I switched from tommee tippee. Ella is also on Neocate milk, not sure if that might be the problem! lisa
i am becoming increasingly concerned about my little one. her intake went down when she went onto Nutramigen 3 weeks ago but then it seemed to improve a bit but in the last week, it is a real battle to get her to take more than 2 and a half oz at a time. Her intake is decreasing. She only had 16 oz yesterday. She is in pain once she reaches 2/ 1/2 oz. People keep saying this is her capacity. Then why was she taking 4/ 5 oz before and is now bigger so should be able to take more. I am sure her symptons are getting worse again so presume her meds are not enough for her now. It doesn't seem like Nutramigen is working but I am scared to change without seeing the paed in case it all gets even worse.
Hi Folk's my little Ollie is nearly 7 months old and has severe reflux since he was 3 weeks old he was also put on neocate milk but had the same problem he just refused to drink it is so i put him back onto Aptimil. He also had bad tummy pains for quit a while when he started solids (for the first 4 or 5 weeks ) thot it was doing him no good but i kept on going with it now is is taking 2 to 3 solids a day and looks really pleased when he knows its feeding time and no more tummy pains(i cut out his milk thro the day still gets about 18oz a day as he is still up at night think it has more to do with his reflux than being humgry)

cheers karen
Karen, Sarah and Susie,
Thanks for this, it's helpful to know I'm not alone !
Karen - when you say Ollie is up in the night - is it like us where Oskar is up from about 4.30 am waking sometimes up to 20 times until 6.30 am and crying. I try to settle him with the dummy but this doesn't always work and sometimes milk but think that it makes him uncomfortable. I'd so like to know how to get rid of these multiple nightwakings (he sleeps well and soundly from 7 pm to 1 am then feeds and goes through to about 4.30) but don't know how to.
Many thanks again,
Sarah
Little Ollie gose down about 9.30pm till 2.00am i try to give him some water and his dummy but makes him worse just cries and arches his back so i give him a bottle sometime that is even a struggle then gose down till about 6am (still very uncomfortable during these hours)wakes up crying and is still so tired but can't sleep because he is in so much pain i have tried putting him in his car seat sometimes works i still swaddle him and he is still on his side just wish i could have 1 night where he sleeps with a relaxed look on his face he also has a severe heart condition and am not allowed to let him cry at all but is getting better through the day as he is mostly on solids now

thanks karen
Karen, Did you make the decision to put him back on Aptimil or did you wait till you went back to see the paed? It is another 5 weeks till we will get an appt. Did he get worse when you put him back on Aptimil?
Hi Hun - just to let you know we did the same - were given peptid junior by paed and she hated it so we went back onto aptamil and she started to gain weight again - albeit slowly and took more milk - not much more but more
Karen,
I was told by the paediatric dietitian we were referred to, to avoid water for reflux babies as this makes it flare up.
Not sure if htis is of help.
Sarah
Hi Sarah/Victoria

I put Ollie back on Aptimal myself But i put him on the hungary baby milk and he started to drink a bit more again and he also gained a bit more weight (he is 16lb)
I have seen a few different paeds for Ollies reflux and his heart condition and none have told me to avoid water in fact they told me i had to give Ollie plenty of water because it is important for ollie not to be dehaydrated because of his condition
Hi all,
I've always been told to avoid water for my LO as well although to be honest l don't have any choice as it comes immediately back up and chokes her badly.
If you think about it thicker fluids and food help reflux because they stay in the stomach better so water would be the worst thing as it's so thin. Karen have you tried adding a bit of thickener to his milk at all -you can do this to water as well if he needs to have it. If you don't already then it would defiantely be worth trying.
