LittleRefluxers

Hey everyone!
I would just like to intorduce myself...my name is Isabel and I have a 19 week old baby daughter, Skye, who is a little refluxer, mainly of the silent variety now. She was born 7 weeks prem and has been suffering with reflux since about 6 weeks old.
We have been down the Infant Gaviscon route, which gave her constipation and bad tummy pain. And we have recently tried Ranitidine, which just made her even more sick : (
So yesterday we spent 4 hours at our local childrens unit and have come away with another prescription this time for Omeperazole. I am off to collect it this afternoon and really hope it will answer our prayers, as feed times are all about screaming with pain and punching the bottle away these days.

Has anybody else had success with this medicine? Would love to hear some success storeis please!

Iz & SKye x

Hi and welcome. My LO has just turned 4 months and we are currently on Nutrimigem and Gaviscon. We are waiting to see the Paed so aren't on any other meds at the moment but from the sound of it it sometimes takes a couple of tries before the right med and dosage is found so hang on in there. Hello

I've recently found this site and whilst it's not nice to hear of other people having similar problems it is very helpful to read what they have to say. Our 16 week old has been on ranitidine for weeks and weeks and it does seem to make quite a difference but he too is sick a lot and we do still have the screaming and going red and squirming about. Have you started solids yet ?

Liz M
Hi
I've not started solids yet but have an appointment may help with my HV tomorrow which I'm going to discuss with her. The last time I spoke to her about it she had said to wait as long as possible but we're going through quite a bad phase at the moment and I'm wondering if weaning may help. We've also got an appointment with the Paed next week.

Karen
Hi

Same here, I'm really hoping that solids will help. We're also having a bad patch with a lot of crying and his weight has dropped and are also due to see the paed this week. I asked HV today about baby rice but they said the same, wait as long as you can. It's hard though isn't it ? Our babies are the same age so feedback on how the solids go when you start would be appreciated if that's OK ? The pic of your baby is very cute, it's horrible to see them in pain over something which should be easy for them.

Hi Liz

Yeah I know what you mean I asked my HV today about weaning and she's said to wait and ask the paed next week. I feel like so much is hinging on this appointment I see your LO is on ranitadine did you get it easy enough? I'm just scared of going and not getting any meds I know that the won't nessesarily be a miracle but even if they help a little. I'll keep you updated with the weaning etc. Will youn keep me updated as well? My LO had a really good time of it last week and was a dream it was just so good to see her happy and the way she should be without pain but since Saturday the reflux has been horrendous and she's been so uncomfortable. It's so upsetting seeing your LO in pain I feel like I'm living on my nerves at the moment. My 4 year old is really playing me up the now as well. When are you seeing your paed?

Karen
Hi there

We've had a shocking day here ! Sickness and very little milk and howling. The GP wanted to give me Gaviscon but the paed gave us ranitidine with no bother at all. We've got a check up tomorrow I'll post another message to you after that. It is really hard to see them in pain especially when the rest of the time he's such a sweet baby and smiles at everyone etc. I felt at my wits end today so am also pinning hopes on hosp appointment.

Will of course keep you updated re : solids and if he says tomorrow that I can start I'm certainly going to in case it's any better !

Liz
Hi Liz

Hope you got on ok at the paed? We've actually had a really good day and I thought I would post a quick msg while Poppy is sleeping and before I pick up my other two from nursery. I know what you mean Poppy has been an angel today and laughing and giggling at anybody and anything it's just such a shame that there's quite alot of the days that reflux gets in the way and she's in pain with that but at least we're getting some good days it makes it's bearable. Let me know who you got on and how your LO is.

Karen
Sorry I'm a bit rubbish with computers and it took me a while to find this message again to reply to. Paed said he needs to be seen by a speech therapist to look at the swallowing to see if there's a problem there. She said not to wean but I went to the doctor one day as he had 11 oz by the end of a day and they were all difficult and she said try baby rice if intake that low. So I do give him some rice every few days and it goes in fine. He's either sick or he isn't I can't see that the solids make any difference to that yet. I won't try anything other than rice til he's 6 months if I can help it and as long as his weight line doesn't drop any more as he's gone from 60th to 25th. How are you and Poppy ?
Hi Liz
Well Poppy's on ranitidine now and has been for about 3 weeks but unfortunately it's not the miracle we were hoping for things have been worse than ever. Poppy has reached new heights of screaming. We're going for a barium swallow on Monday so hoping that'll give us some answers. Our paed told us to try and not wean but I'm going to ask again when we go back. I hope your LO hasn't been too bad it's just so frustrating. Some days it feells like it'll never end and I just feel so sorry for Poppy. Keep me posted. Karen x
Well so far one week on Omeprazole seems to be the answer to our prayers, hurrah!
The dose has been upped from 4mg to 8mg daily, which I have to make up with tablets and mix with cool boiled water, mmm!
She is certainly a much more settled baby, and we had a follow up appr at the hospital yesterday and they are pleased with her progress too : )
We are managing to syringe it in to the side of her mouth slowly as she's only just starting on solids, but we hope to hide in in her baby rice soon, much easier I'm sure.
It's so nice to be able to go out and about again with her and not be scared to feed in public in case she screamed the place down teehee!
I hope you all find your holy grail soon too : )
Hi, regarding ranitidine - remember that it is WEIGHT DEPENDENT so get your lo weighed regularly and ask the chemist to check the dosage against the weight. Also ppi's like omeprazole do take about a fortnight for them to build up in the system. When you're at the paed ask about domperidone (apparently this helps the sickness - or so it says on our bottle!).
My DD will be 1 next week and still suffers terribly with "silent" reflux - although it's not very silent when they scream the house down from morning til night! I would hang on as long as you can with weaning - we weaned early on paed's advice and are now left with major issues with food allergies - I am positive that my dd's stomach wasn't mature enough so I understand why they recommend to wait til 6 months. Another note have you thought about reflux + possible milk allergy. More than 40% of babies who suffer from reflux the underlying cause is milk allergy. We saw the allergist a month ago and he advised us of this. Our story is way too long unfortunately for me tell - but we eventually went private to see a fantastic paed gastroenterologist in Sheffield - and due to the mishandling of our daughter's care at our local hospital she now suffers from severe oral aversions! sorry for rambling on a bit but I do wish you all the luck and I hope the new medicine works - we have just been put on omeprazole and domperidone (after a year-long battle I hasten to add), and for the past week she has been great, but today again the dreaded crying, whinging etc etc has returned - so I'm thinking is it the fish I gave her to eat yesterday playing up?

Let us know how you get on and if I can help anyone please pm me.

Pat
Hi there

Our 4 month old is on ranitidine and due to be reviewed tomorrow. I note your comments about weaning and am nervous about doing so early but his weight is dropping so I guess I might not have any choice. Do you know what the diff is between omeprazole and ranitidine ?

It sounds like quite a battle you've had for your little one to get sorted out.

Liz
