LittleRefluxers

Is there anything I can do to help the screaming?

Hi. My son is 6 weeks old and has recently been diagnosed with reflux after 3 weeks of crying in the evenings and after feeds. We tried Gaviscon but he got constipated on that so the doctor has prescribed Ranitidine. We have only given him 3 doses so haven't seen any improvement yet. Hopefully this will happen soon as I am really feeling stressed out with the screaming after feeds and in the evenings.

I just wanted to find out if other babies scream in pain for hours on end in the evenings and if there is anything that people can suggest to help relive some of the pain?

Hi Emma/
Oh yessssssssssss the screaming is the norm,,, Im really sorry to hit you with it but this is part of the symptoms.......
I used Gaviscon infant (coats the insides to stop the acid burn) which takes a good two weeks to build up in the system,, but is no good on its own. We were also given Ranitidine (antacid) but due to the weight to dose thing it's hard to keep on top of the dosing. I prefered Omeprozole. We were given Domperidone (empties the tummy quickly, helps stop sickness and the amount of acid). The key to it is finding the right combination of medication, to help with the pain.
I would also use paracetamol on a regular basis, this was oked by our consultant.

Another good tip is keeping him up right after feeds for at least half an hour, I never let my daughter lie flat, not even for a nappy change, elevate the head of the coat, or better still if you can buy a wedge there really good.

Sorry iv'e been so negative, I understand how your feeling about it, iv'e been where you are now. Keep your chin up, its not easy. Things do get better over time and with good meds control, she's now 19 months old and iv'e found my little girl is VERY VERY loving,,,, Im a mother of 3 and she's my only refluxer.

I dont know much about other milks that can be offered and other types of doctors that can help.
Good luck.
