LittleRefluxers

HI all

My 11 month old is lactose intollerant and has cows' milk protein allergy.  He's on 3 good meals a day plus Nutramigen AA.  I thought it was time to start introducing some of the foods he's supposedly allergic to.  I started with giving him bread that contained egg and he seemed to fine on that.  I then went onto wheat and gluten and again, fine.  I then started soya (as the dietician said to try soya if he was fine on wheat) and he again appeared fine.  I then gave him foods containing more gluten and wheat (a piece of "healthy" cake and some weetabix, on two seperate days).  He started doing his grunting again which normally indicates allergy but was also constipated, so could be that.  I stopped giving him any allergens from Thursday and he woke up yesterday really unsettled, screaming, bringing his knees up and arching his back.  How long do allergens stay in the system for?  I know milk can stay for up to 6 weeks.  What advice have any of you been given on introducing allergens?  I figured that he's only 3 weeks away from being one, it wouldn't hurt to start now. My dietician is beyond useless and I'm still waiting from my paed appointment.

Thanks in advance for your help! xx

Hi gerib
I don't really have a lot of knowledge re the foods but would assume it would be the same as the milk if they've had milk they've been allergic to. I think they're all different and the timescales would be different. I know they normally say with the milk 4-6 weeks max, but with my lo it took over 9. I would say though that as he's only had a little it shouldn't really take any more than a week. I think the reason the milk takes so long when we first find out when they're babies is that it takes so long to have them diagnosed before you know what the problem is and for all those weeks they're taking between 5-7 feeds per day which must cause massive irritation - however trying something once or twice should have it out the system quickly xx
Thank you so much for your advice Susie, that's so helpful. He only gets constipated, no rash or wheezing so I'll introduce stuff slowly. I think I got a little over excited and gave him a little too much. He has quite an appetite!!!

Thanks again and hopefully his symptoms will get better soon and we can start again.

THanks Lara, makes sense! He'll hopefully be back to normal soon. How are you doing? Did the move go well?
Hiya

I hope he's better today, it's just shit when you see improvement then they have a few down days.

The move went well thanks, I can't beleive I managed to do all this with two kids, one of which has severe reflux and milk allergy lol.

I'm actually getting ready to go back to work now too, I start back next Friday and have found a really wonderful nursery for little missy - honestly, 10 weeks ago, I never would've beleived I would be talking about going back to work. It's such a shame though that for my whole maternity leave she's been poorly - I feel like I've been robbed lol.

My son has also settled really well and has made loads of new friends and the school is fabulous, and I've found a really good childminder for him too. So all is well, but I'm feeling a wee bit like Billy no mates at the minute.

Keep me posted on how little mans doing, I had tried to wean Nicole at 13 weeks following paed advice, but it made her much worse and we ended up back in hospital again, so I think the poor wee lambs' gonna be on Nutramigen aa only until she's 12 cos her mummys too bloody scared to try anything lol

Glad the move went well and that the kids are settling in well. I know exactly what you mean about going back to work and being robbed of your mat leave. That's exactly how I felt and am therefore waiting a bit before going back to work. 13 weeks is quite young though to start weaning, we waited until 16 weeks and had no problems. I gave him a tiny amount of soya yesterday and he screamed for an hour at 1.30am. He did the same with wheat and gluten so I think it's fair to say he's still allergic, grrrrrr. Am going to book him in with paed so we can get a referral to allergy specialist as I have no idea what to do next. It's a nightmare as he really liked the soya yoghurts and desserts. Not too fussed about the wheat and gluten as you can find tons of stuff that doesn't contain any but it's impossible to find dairy free, lactose free, soya free desserts.

Anyhow, have a lovely day and I hope your return to work goes well.

Thanks Susie, didn't know about the rice milk. I went to the health shop this morning and got lots of bread, cake and pancake mixes. It's Samuel's bday in 2 weeks and would at least like to give him a cake he can eat! Samuel also hates deserts made with Nutramigen AA. Was going to make ice lollies so glad to hear your little one likes them.

I've got an appointment with the paed on Tuesday so will def ask to be referred to the allergy specialist, the dietician in Cheltenham is just far too rubbish.

Thanks again Susie!
