LittleRefluxers

So back we trotted to the gastro paed last night so he could see for himself the effect that 2 bottles of C&G formula given on saturday had on our LR (paed recommended taking him off aptamil comfort formula to try normal with carobel last week) .  He was covered head to toe in eczema and has been so unhappy all week - really clingey, not wanting to play even though it was only two bottles and we immediately put him back on the comfort formula.

After examining him the paed declared that Harry has cmpi - finally!  I've only been telling the medics that since he was 6 weeks old!  He wants him to do a barium swallow and also have a skin prick test given the number of foods he has reacted to so far.

So now we have nutramigen 1 plus carobel plus 5mg omeprazole every night.

Problem is that the milk is so thick I can't get it out of the teats - we are using size 3 tomee tippee teats and even tried the variflow (which he doesn't like for some reason) but no joy (used 3 scoops for 6oz). I made his second bottle this morning a bit less thick but he has been more sicky with it than the first.  Might have to resort to getting out the hot needle to the size 3 teats.

The carobel pack says to add to handwarm milk - I assumed that meant once the bottle had cooled rather than to a hot bottle but it doesn't look like it dissolves properly (you can see the particles sticking to the bottle sides).  Anyone know if there are any issues with putting it in when the bottle is hot?

Also - anyone make the nutramigen bottles up in advance?  Do you put the carobel in when its re-heated or when you make it up?  We used to make the days bottles up in the morning when Harry was on regular formula but couldn't with the comfort because it used to seperate in the fridge and the bottle needed to be hot to dissolve the gaviscon.

Hoping that this new regime is going to work!

i honestly think carobel works for some and not others. For what it is worth my little one was on it i used 1 scoop to 6oz. I was cold water sterilising the blender and making the milk up in one batch with really hot water, like letting the kettle cool for 5 mins, putting the carobel in withi the milk and blitzing to dissolve. Then plunge the made bottles in to cold water, bring the temp down as quickly as poss. The storing lidded on the bottom shelf of the frige, at the back for up to 20 hrs. Ia have a fridge thermometer, and turned the fridge down so it read 3degrees where the bottles are.
i found carobel just made my little one really constipated and uncomfortable, but he has other issues too. Xxx

Thanks Sara.  I think I will make them up in a batch and see how we get on.

What a trauma you've been through just to get the right diagnosis! Glad you've finally got it, poor baby!
My son was on Neocate and Carobel we never had any problems with it and he started on 3scoops in 6ozs. I used to add it just before I gave the feed, just remember to shake well. Nutramigen 1 still contains dairy, albeit broken down. You may need nutramigen aa which is on a parr with Neocate .
They have changed the formulation in the last 8 months, if it is the new stuff it will tell you that the formulation has changed, but it is "stronger".
Carobel consistency has changed recently it's now thicker so maybe try less scoops. I use tommee tipee variflow teats and need just a scoop and a half-2 for an 8oz bottle.
