LittleRefluxers

Any advice will be good, my daughter is now 6 month old and since she was 4 week old she has struggled on her bottles, only taking 3oz max a feed and believe me that is a struggle, we were fobbed off with the usual colic excuse till she was about 12 week old, when i pushed for a pead app, she was then diagnosed with silent reflux and suspected dairy intollerance, she was on ranitadine, helped with the screaming but not the intake of milk, tried every dairy free milk going 7 kinds to be exact, none of which she would take so had to keep her on normal sma, started weaning at 12 weeks on advice from h/v, and been struggling with weaning ever since, she was put on omeprazole 4 weeks ago, this has helped a little but not a cure.

The problem i have is anything with any type of texture, ready brek or jars that are not like water she just gags and then refuses to eat them, sometimes she eats and sometimes she doesnt, its just like i cant find anything she likes except pureed fruit (she will probably have a sweet tooth already), i am just at my wits end, im lucky if i can get 2 and a half oz down her per feed and then lucky if i get some food down too!!

She has slept through from 4 weeks, has no problem on her back and is happy as long as she is not eating.

She also is always blowing out of her nose, like you do when you get water up your nose, does anyone elses baby do this!

Please help!!!

By the way she has never lost weight but only gains about 1oz a week and is small!!

hi have you tryed the sma lactofree milk its exactly the same as sma gold just got the lactose removed i got ours from the internet then had it prescribed although i dont know wether this would help with the amount shes drinking my lo was like this i remember it taking over 1 hr sometimes to get 1 1/2 ozs in her eventually i just stopped putting pressure on me and her i let her drink what she wanted after around 30 mins i stopped trying to force her no matter how much she had taken cos one feed was blurring into the other i then just fed her 3hrs later or even 4 hrs also when i started to feed her solids i stopped worrying i gave her literally 2 tablespoons twice a day at first then 3 times day then every week i increased it to 3 tablespoon etc my lo was only 8lbs 13ozs at 18 wks when she was at her worst and at 18 months is only 21lbs in 9-12 month clothes still but she has quite a good little appetite now we still have days where she dosent eat well sometimes but she eats resonably for the rest of the time hope this helps i just found graduly introducing solids slowly helped us i know your lo is not gaining weight fast but she is gaining so you know shes not starving herself your doing a great job good luck.x
Thanks for your reply kelly, yes that was the first different milk they tried us on, she took that no probs but it made no difference, as she is supposidly intollerant to the dairy and not the lactose, your story sounds same as mine, i struggle to get 1 oz down her sometimes, my little girl now weighs about 14lb so she is putting it on slowly, but its very slowly, did your lo still progress the same i.e sitting up walking etc?, cerys is now turning over so im not too worried but just wanted to know, when did you stop giving your lo milk and did she ever take juice, cause i cant get that down cerys either.
Hi Sian,
My little girl is just coming up to 12 weeks now and sounds very similiar in that she seems a lot more settled than she used to be and is really quite happy and sleeps through the night but when it comes to feeding just doesn't want to know she will only take a few ounces at a time and that is a real struggle, feeding always takes an hour and sometimes she will gag as soon as you put the teat in her mouth, she is still putting on weight but really slowly.
She only used to suffer from silent reflux but recently has been bringing back feeds which she tends to do more when i have really pushed her to feed so probably my fault but i worry so much that she isn't feeding enough especially when the hv tells me she should be aiming to have atleast 30oz's a day.
She is on nutramigen 1, gaviscon and ranitidine, we have just started the ranitidine in the hope to increase her milk intake but although it seems to have settled her she still gets very tense and fidgets when feeding and hasn't really increased her intake at all.
Have got a paed appointment tomorrow so will see what they have to say.
Keep being told that she will be better when i start weaning her and suggested i start at 17 weeks but i'm not so sure if her tummy can't tolerate milk then surely solid food will be worse.
Sorry i'm not being much help to you but do know how you must be feeling xx
hi i didnt stop giving her milk i just stopped sitting there getting us both frustrated i use to be in tears so after 30 mins i stopped to be honest once i did that and slowly introduced solids i cut her bottles down and she drank larger volumes naturally until she was on 3 a day then 2 a day now none at 18 months i gave her extra dairy in soya yogurts half a yogurt for her dinner or tea then as i increased her food intake over the weeks i gave her it at dinner and tea as dessert this how i did it
7:00am little porridge and milk to drink
11:00am starting with 1 tablespoon at first puree food or half yogurt
12:00pm bottle milk
3:00pm bottle of milk
4:00pm again starting with 1 tablespoon puree food or yogurt
6:30 bedtime bottle
i just let her take what she wanted it took the pressure of us both and cause i knew she was getting something every few hours i knew she was alright i didnt start weaning till she was sick months because she had puemonia from10 to 18wks because her reflux wasnt treated properly so we were advised to let her recover from that first plus when i got her on this regime she started sleeping through for the first time since she was born so she must of been getting enough from what bit of food she ate i increased it every week so her tummy could gradually strecth when i thought she was eating enough i just gave her one bottle at 1pm ish not one at 12pm and 3pm and thats when she increased the volume to 6-7ozs by herself omeprazole did help her alot she started on 10mg then was upped to 15mg what style of it are you having we hve the losec mups i read on here the medicne form is not as effective .x oh and she wouldnt take jucie so i just kept offering her it at mealtimes and was happy with any little sips she took now she drinks it by the gallon lol. and even thogh shes little she has developed normally walked at 12 months and now has mastered the word no very well ha ha
p.s i never gave her the fruit in yogurts i pushed it to one side cos she gagged and alpro soya do chocolate, carmel & vanilla desserts in the free from sections not in fridge at the supermarkets they have no lumps at all.x
hi, my little girl will be 23weeks on sat, and she has silent reflux too, we started weaning at 11 weeks with baby rice(told by h.v) as jasmine would only have 10oz in 24hrs. Then we has a speech and language theorpist to see her and she said experiment wth different flavours. It seemed like jasmine would only eat anything sweet, so we started with ella's kitchen pouches, they are sweet and savoury mixed together, they sound horrible but jasmine loved them, we gave her them for about 2-3 weeks and then gradually introduce my own dinners and now she eats them, its a struggle at first, but the h.v told me every baby gags when they try food and just keep trying, there is alot of food wasted but it was worth every penny. she has good days where she eats lots and then days where she doesn't but her milk intake has improved she has about 18 - 20oz in 24hrs, but i was told by pead, not to give water with food just milk, and that seems to have worked. Hope this has helped.
hi there,

i cant really offer any advice with the feeding but wanted to say my son is who will be 1 yr old in 2 weeks wil still only take 4 ounces, he has severe silent relfux and dairy intollerence we found out at 8 months he also has i hiatus hernia.he has always been difficult to feed, seems like he ouwld take just enought to take the hunger away and thats it.
we have tried every milk going and he just will never take any more in one go, often he only takes 3 and has gained weight very slowly he was 8.8lb at birth on the 75th centile and is now 19lb5 on the 9th centile. and he as never slept through, i still have to feed him every 3-4 hours at night!! zzzzzz lol

we had terrible trouble with food and he didnt start tolerating untill he was 9 months after he changed from the omeprazole to lansoprazole, maybe you could ask to try this?
like your daughter sometimes he will eat often he wont. how is she with finger foods?

kate xx
Thanks for all your advice it really helps, i think i have been pushing the food thing too much desperately trying her to put on weight, i think i will try the ellas kitchen pouches and the soya yogurts too, she will take the hipp organice sweet chicken and squash so think i will just persevere with this and stop trying to push other things on her,.
Kate cerys was 7lb 12 at birth and is now only 14lb putting on about 1 1/2 oz a week, but im so lucky she has slept through from 4 weeks, i dont know how you all deal with this with no sleep too!!
Thanks kelly on the weaning advice i will certainly give your routine a try, id try anything just to see her improve.
Kathryn cerys has never taken 30oz and dont worry too much my pead told me as long as she is taking some milk and food dont worry about it, as she will not dehydrate and as long as she is putting on some weight she will be ok, also cerys calmed a bit on the ranitadine but it never immproved the intake, she is on omeprazole 5ml now and this has helped with the screaming but still not the intake, im just gonna except the fact there is no miracle cure and its gonna just be something i have to deal with.
So nice to know your all here for advice cause my h/v is crap and does not even phone me, i have to phone her and asked for her to be weighed!!!
My little boy who is now 3 was a breeze so this is all a big shock to me
thanks allxx
