Thanks Sara, wonder what constitutes long term ..... I'm just very unsure of Omeprazole. It seems to stop the acid (somewhat), but seems to make my LO iritable in other ways, and not at all sleepy even on a low dose. But sod all else even comes close to working, so like you say where does that leave us with regard to the use of it ! Rock and a hard place ....
Hi,
I am new to the site, ongoing reflux with my 10 month old boy. If i could do things again, i would be quicker to accept a trial of new medication and not put it off hoping things will improve! I think i would also have more confidence in trusting my own instincts as a mother! :-)
We'll see I guess, we have our first private appt with Dr Shah next week. My daughter is 7 weeks and on 5mg, so a little more than 'allowable' for her weight. But given the way she acts when she's on it I feel so wary of increasing the dose.
She's so unsettled, still screams a lot, and doesn't seem to be able to sleep on it. But we all know what life is like without any meds too, so I don't know where to turn really.
We've tried everything and nothing's helping so far. I'm hoping for a miracle from Dr Shah, I can't take much more of the constant screaming, and today she's refusing feeding for the first time too (I knew it was coming, she was slowing up and getting very fussy on the boob ..... and it finally has).
Hi This thread is great. I'm new on here. My son is almost 12 weeks. Was a great baby up to 9 weeks was on gaviscon from 6 weeks for reflux-never spews but is in obvious discofort. Things gradually got worse. He started losing weight and fussing with feeds so GP put on 0.5mg ranitidine three times/day. To date i feel this has made things worse or maybe its the reflx progressing. I went back to GP last week and he gave me infacol yes infacol! I questioned hi about this making the reflux worse but he prescribed me 2 bottles. I feel like i am battling with a brick wall. this past few days my son has been screaming at the bottle only taking 1-2 ounces . he is hungry but cant take the milk. I am bottle feeding. He also had bad excema and has been very snuffly from birth with 3 colds and one chest infection. My 2 year old has a severe nut allergy and looking back he was a 'colicky' baby or so we were told. I am wondering if my baby has an intolerance or allergy to the milk?? and what is the best formula to try?? also can Ranitidine make things worse???. i have been very tearful and find it so hard to see my baby in pain and not feeding.. am sure many of you can identlfy with this. thanks Edel
Hi Mary, welcome to LR. It's quite possible that your LO has a dairy intolerance or allergy. The first step is to try a hydrolysed formula like Pepti or Nutramigen 1 where the dairy is broken down. A lot of CMPI babies will be ok on this type of formula. If you are still having issues the next step is an amino acid based formula like Neocate or Nutramigen AA.
In general I'd be surprised if ranitidine makes things worse, but it's always possible that an individual baby reacts adversely to any medication. It's not very good as an acid suppressant, if you are not getting on with it and your son is still uncomfortable then I'd ask to move on to a PPI like omeprazole or lansoprazole.

Hi Jen thanks for your reply. Can I buy the Nutramigen or does it have to be on perscription? Also I am giving Ranitidine 15mins before bottles is this the best way. The bottles after ranitidine are the the screamy ones at the minute. Edel
Don't think the timing of the ranitidine with relation to bottles is important. You can buy the hypoallergenic formulas but they are very expensive - about £40 a tin for Neocate, £30 ish for the hydrolysed stuff. It's worth doing if you can't get them on prescription as a short term trial, you would know within a few weeks if it's helping, but I'd certainly approach the GP about it first. They are all supposed to be used on medical advice only anyway.
I don't know how much of the site you've read, but if you haven't already got a copy of the book Colic Solved I would strongly advise it. A lot of the time doctors and HVs are not clued up about reflux and you need to be going to the appointment with a pretty clear idea what is the next step. The book is a must-read.
