LittleRefluxers

s anyone had any problems with weaning, my 7months old won’t eat food, HV has suggested a food aversion due to reflux, as food = pain, has anyone got any fab ideas, I’ve tried everything, making my own food, packet food, fruits, veg's, rusks, nothing gets past him, when i first started he was accepting of food, now he's not, the only time i can get him to even open his mouth, is if i put him in front of baby TV (he's addicted) as it's total distraction. He’s on gaviscon, domperidone, and omepazole though we haven’t stated the omepazole yet has he’s just had gastroenteritis which he ended up in hospital with dehydration as the doctors were just diagnosing him with constant reflux. It was very frustrating, the upshot being we actually got seen by a pead and he’s got a follow up in 4 weeks, as uptill then the GP’s were not referring him, I don’t feel they were listening to how much and often he’s puking, as he’s gaining weight. I know from this site this is very common and it’s comforting to read everyone else’s experiences.

Hi there, sorry you are having problems, it took my little boy a long time to come around to eating (he had already developed a bottle aversion) but he doesn't do too badly these days. I would suggest that rather than keep persisting when he isn't keen you need to a) make absolutely sure he's on the right doses of all his meds. and b) ask for a referral to a speech and lang. therapist as they can give you some advice re. feeding. Liam likes his finger foods - he really needs a Wotsit or similar in his hand to help keep him interested as you give him the puree. Have you tried melt-in-the mouth things like Wotists or those Organix crisps of chocolate buttons?

Good luck, you will get there in the end. If you haven't started the Omeprazole I think this should really help, so give this a week or so to work and you might see an improvement in the eating, The gastroenteritis will also have put him off his food I would think, so I do hope things start to improve.

Thanks for your reply, Ollie had a bottle aversion also, but the since being on gaviscon that seems a lot better. the HV is trying to get a referral to a dietician as there is a feeding clinic at the local hospital, but she’s not sure it deals with infants, also we’ve given the omeprezole today, it’s tricky stuff to dissolve but he took it with a shudder, think it must be pretty jucky. I’ll try finger food and wotsits to see if that’ll help.
I had to take it very slowly weaning my son but by trial and error found things he liked (e.g. breadsticks as he was teething very early - first few teeth at 4.5 months). However, the reason for replying to your message is that a friends baby had a food adversion and the dietican helped her introduce food through play and activities (e.g. to get him used to food even before eating it). She got a referral from her GP. He's now over one and is eating really well as a result. :) Your consultant should be able to help you find the right dietican to help you.
My last bit of advice is that my son was sick all the time but still put on weight - so HV wasn't helpful as they were just concerned with weight gain. What happened for us was that my son took about 2 months after weaning starting before he was eating enough food for the volume of reflux sickness to start to reduce (my HV said it would stop as soon as he started weaning!!) and then it started to get better. Now at 21 months he has no reflux (only lasting effect is that if he has a cold he is more likely than his peers to be sick if he gets phelm on his chest).
