LittleRefluxers

Hi all, I have just come across this website and already feel slightly relieved.

My little boy who is now 10 weeks old was born at 34 weeks his corrected age is 4 weeks. Since he was about 5 weeks old he has started vomiting up his milk and it was projectile not very nice for my little man often followed by lots of screaming. We have been to the Childrens Hospital who diagonised reflux and they prescribed him infant gaviscon which didn't really do much, we they went back to the hospital and they thought it may have been pyloric stynosis but ruled that out and said that it was reflux again and prescribed Losec Mups (omeprazol) 1 10mg tablet disolved in 10ml of water and then for me to syringe 2.5ml and if no better increase to 5ml once a day.

I have just increased his medication to 5ml and he is still being sick (projectile) I really feel like I don't know what to do next, if I go back to my GP they will just send me back to the Childrens Hospital A & E and I really don't feel like totally understand how stressful it is for both my baby and me and my partner.

Has anyone tried any other medication that has worked, can I demand to see a consultant instead of having to go to A & E ?

Thanks in advance

Hi hun im so sorry to hear you and your family are going through hell at the moment. Ok so First off how long have you been on the omeprazole? because it takes a few weeks to kick in and it sounds like the dose is right. But your little one needs to be on Domperdome for the sickness asap. the omeprazole is great for the the acid control but if your little one is being sick you defo need domperdome as well. also does baby have a rash or runny nappies ?
All the best hun x
this is his second week on the omeprazole, the poor thing is still being sick, I will ask my GP for some domperdome and hopefully they prescribe him some, will it stop him being sick? no, no rash and no runny nappies

Hi there, my little boy had severe reflux and at about eight weeks (he was also/small and early) had a barium swallow and a pH test so they could see how bad the reflux was - so it's worth asking about these tests (neither require an anaesthetic). Then he was prescribed maximum medications of Omeprazole (the strongest drug) but also with Domperidone (which helps with the vomiting) and Ranitidine as well. It really did make a lot of difference - hope this info. helps to see what other options you can ask about. I think you need to ask about being referred to a gastro. peadiatrician as your average GP won't be able to prescribe this level of medication.

am off to th drs this morningto see what he can do about getting us referred to a peadiatrician - will let you know how i get on - the other thing is am i expecting too much i.e. that with him taking the meds that he wont be sick at all or at least it shouldn't be projectile

Hi ya, sorry to here your going through the reflux challenge, think at some point we have all been there and can fully sympathise with you.
My little one was diagnosed with relux at 5 wks old, She use to take Ranitadine (antacid tablet, never rated it) so changed to Omeprazole 5ml for a time but then increased to 10mg daily, great stuff. Gaviscon infant for a while and as she weaned went on to Gaviscon advanced (fantastic stuff), Domperidone, (this was wonderful stuff helps stop the sickie ness, (but you get more dirty nappies), also thick and easy you add it to milk help thicken it to keep it down.
Some H.V and G.P's are great but they dont seem to fully understand the problems. Im not saying its any thing more than Reflux but reflux parents do say REFLUX is the sympton of some thing else.
I always had this niggling felling there was some thing about milk with my daughter, so I demanded a lactose intolarence test, this was done but came back negative (5wks old). How ever she is now 17 months old and at 14 months was told dairy intolarent and 15 months we found out she is wheat and gluten intolarent. Her reflux is pretty much under control now,,,, and she is a lot more a happy little toddler. Could be barking up the wrong tree, but any thing is worth a try if it helps x
Oh my what a few days we have had. I went to my GP to ask to be referred and he wasn't very keen to do this - but I totally had a paddy and stamped my feet, then yesterday 01/01/10 we ended up in A & E because my little boy was soooo sick and in his sick brought up what looked like poppy seeds, Dr at A & E said it was old blood from where the acid had irritated his food pipe and the sheer power and volume of sick had forced them to come away, I asked if my little boy could have any medication to stop the sickness, or could he be tested for milk alergy or have his tummy scanned and the answer was no to all of these, because he is still gaining weight they have told us to put up with the sickness. Its okay for them to say this, its not them having to try and comfort their baby after he has been sick and is screaming the place down - I really feel at a loss and hope that my appointment with the peadiatrician. At the end of the day its all about making my little man more comfortable.

The whole thing is just sooo stressful and if another person says to me, don't worry he will grow out of it, I may blow my top

Hi hun

If you read my previous posts you will see I am huge fan of Carobel. It is not as widely used these days and a lot of Doctors don't think of it but we found it to be amazing.

Its a thickner you add to their milk feed and it helps keep the milk down. My son used to vomit all day long, and I mean VOMIT. Not just dribbles. People were shocked at the amount. The first day of using the Carobel it kept the milk down in his tummy! Obviously the advantage of keeping the milk down is that the acid can stay down too, causing less pain.

May be worth a try.

One other thing I was searching the internet last night and I was on the SMA website and noticed that they do a milk for babies with reflux caled SMA Staydown Infant Milk - have any of you tried this milk?
Hi Hun - there are a number of things that might help you

The Omprazole will help with the pain but you do need domeridone as well - that can be prescribed by GP - that helps with sickness as it moved the contents of the tummy on faster i.e less chance of being sicked up

However what I found the best was thicker mik and introducing solids at a young age (12 weeks with my LO)

SMA staydown is ok - it is like normal milk in the bottle but thickens to a gel in the tummy - its ok but I personally would not recommend it - its difficult to make up and can give tummy ache and constipation - my paed was very scathing of it

You can use Carobel in any milk to thicken it (need to get on prescription) using up to one scoop per oz of milk (trial and error we found 2 scoops in 5 oz milk worked for us)

Also any of the "thicker" milks - Aptimal easy digest, Cow and Gate comfort etc are all quite good and much thicker (consider yr teat and bottle as you need to get it just right as if the milk is too thick then baby won't drink much) Nuk bottles are good for this

Finally might be worth a stint on a dairy free milk (neocate or pepti junior) or a lactose free (SMA LF) as the reflux symptoms can be caused by an allergy to dairy or lactose in around 40% of cases and if thats the case they eliminate the milk and the problems should resolve themselves

Good luck and they do grow out of it - my LO was terrible and she is now almost compeletely better xx
You definitely need domperidone for the sickness. It helps move the food through the gut quicker. Also, I am not sure if it was related to Josie's intolerance but stay down milks caused her to get constipation. Carobel has been much better and you can make it thicker or thinner according to what you need. So I would rate carobel as well :)
Thanks for all your replies, we are off to the hospital tomorrow to see his neo natal Dr about his reflux (we had got discharged but due to lack of help/support from GP and the Drs at A & E fobbing us off) I decided to get in contact with his Dr and see if she would see us again.

Unfortunately for Daniel he has started bringing up what look like poppy seeds or coffee granuals in his sick now, A & E were not concerned about this and said that if he is sick again and they are present to come back

I explained this to his neo natal Dr and she said that it sounds like he has had a tear and bled and apparently when blood meets the acid it turns it almost black and like poppy seeds.

So, I am hoping that tomorrow I will have some positive help and Daniel won't be in as much pain
