Hi all was just wondering if any one knows if there is a link between asthma and hay fever?............
I have been told that kids that suffer from asthma can be more pron to hay fever.

Pig has asthma but only very mild, and we dont have to use her inhaler a lot at all, but over the last week she has been sneezing, runny noes, watery eyes.

Is there any truth in this.

They're both type 1 hypersensitivities so if you have a tendency to develop antibodies to things in the environment (usually referred to as being atopic) you are more likely to have both diseases. Jen x

Jenny is right - they're both atopic conditions and there's a definite tendency for them to go together. In fact, hay fever can apparently predispose someone to asthma and more so if hay fever is left untreated and is poorly managed. Hay Fever also worsens the symptoms of asthma in an asthma sufferer.

Hay fever results from an immune response to pollen (an allergen) and has symptoms include a runny nose, watery and bloodshot eyes and itching around the throat and face area. Asthma causes the lung's airways to swell and narrow and causes symptoms involve wheezing and shortness of breath.

There was apparently a whole WHO Initiative about "Allergic Rhinitis and it's Impact on Asthma" in 2002!!!  Oh and asthma, eczema, and hay fever are also all linked with dairy intolerances/allergies!

I think if Pig isn't already on them, maybe you should speak with your doctor about some antihistamines so that you can tackle the hayfever effectively, Belinda. I am a hayfever sufferer and it's horrible - feel permanently run down and under-the-weather, and although I've now completely grown out of it, I had childhood asthma, which is equally horrid!  My toddler has mild asthma... but fortunately doesn't appear to show any symptoms of hay fever as yet :-)

Hi Sarah, cheers chuck.... Pig (Paige is her real name lol) She also has Eczema and is CMPI and wheat/gluten intolarent.

My 8 year old son (non refluxer) was diagnosed with hay fever around 2 years old but only suffered badly one year...He has now been given some piriton for an alergic reaction to some thing??? His skin has come out in a rash (not spotty rash) looks like he has been standing to close to the fire, but all over his body.

Doctor says could be some thing as simple as his clothes?

Maybe she could take a bit of his... I'll have to clear it with Doc cause of the other meds she is still taking.

It's a long shot, Belinda, but have you changed washing powder recently? I come out in a rash like that if I've worn clothes/slept in sheets washed in biological powder! In fact, it started when i was 7 and my mum thought I had scabies and painted me all over with some horrendous lotion to kill the scabies - I can still remember how much it stung even now!!!  Anyway, as long as I stick with non-bio washing powder I am absolutely fine. It's just a thought...
Jenny / Cheers chuck.

Cole is on inhalers and asthma medication.

He started with the runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, rubbing his nose etc back in april. We saw his resp consultant and he said it looked very much like hayfever. Started on antihistimines and his symptoms cleared up within a few days.

Not sure about the link but its certainly the case for him.

Definitely Belinda! Also linked to cmpi as I'm finding out at the moment. Harry has cmpi and has just been diagnosed with migraines !! I'm so gutted in shock a bit. No migraine in our families or cmpi or food allergies but my parents and dh's brother and sister all get hayfever. It seems it's missed me and dh but Harry has copped the lot :(
The neurologist said straight away is there any asthma, excema or hayfever in our families.
It's quite likely that some kids grow out of cmpi but it develops into the other things as they get older! Something else to worry about... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news x
Can young babies (7 months) get hayfever?  Hubby and I both get it (hubby particularly bad) and Jacob is always rubbing nose quite violently????x
Rachel I swear Lola has hayfever, and I get it too. I don't see why babies couldn't get it, although I know that docs say they cant. But Lola's runny nose and itching eyes are worse when the pollen count is higher. The whites of her eyes also get red streaks.

Babies can get hayfever its very rare they start with it before the age of one but its not to be ruled out.

Thats from Cole's resp consultant, again i ask too many questions but sometimes the information is useful lol

I was told the nose rubbing is allergy/reflux. Duggles does it a lot. Poor face is often scratched to pieces. Still haven't worked out why his congestion hasn't eased at all with anti-histamines. X
Do you think it could be the dog?  I worry that Jacob might be reacting to our cats =( x
