LittleRefluxers

My little one has had bad reflux for 6 months and has a very strong gag reflex and retches a lot especially during the night. It can be quite scary and sounds horrific! Does anyone else's baby do this and any tips?

Hi

Yes our baby does this all the time, it really can be horrible. As far as tips go nothing to suggest really I'm afriad, our paed referred us to a speech and language therpaist to look at the way he swallows but the waiting list is 8 months ! Has anyone told you that it is to do with the reflux as I'd be interested to know if it can cause this ?

Hi Liz,
Yes, i have been told that it's linked to the reflux. Apparently reflux babies produce excess mucus to supress the acid which can make them retch and gag especially when they are lying down. Sometimes she just spits up bubbly saliva which again is common i have been told. I have been seeing a speech and lang therapist (who is also a feeding specialist since Orla was 3 weeks old as we were in hospital and she has never wanted to feed and we had to have a nasal gastric feeding tube for 3 months. The worst thing about the gagging and retching is that it wakes her up at night almost every hour and we are just soooo tired! i guess they will grow out of it - it's just a case of when! she had a cold last week and that seemed to make it so much worse which wasn't pleasant. 8 months is crazy to wait! Good luck x
