LittleRefluxers

I have a 8 week old and he has been diagnosed with silent reflux about 2 weeks ago. At present he is on Ranitidine 3 times a day and gaviscon in his milk. He is currently taking aptamil 1 and after having 2 oz screams as soon as you show him the bottle. I was wondering if I needed to change him onto comfort milk.

any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi hun my little one was the same at that age and we also were on aptamil 1. and gaviscon and it was hell. Then we went on to aptamil easy digest and stopped useing the gaviscon as the easy digest is thick and they say not to add any thickeners to it. the milk did help. but i would say when you make up a bottle make it with boiling water dont wait for it to cool in the kettle. just make the milk and let it cool in the bottle. see how you go and if your little one is still in pain see if you can be put on omeprazole.
p.s make sure you use a fast flowing teat with the easy digest.
Best of luck x
Thanks for the advice. I will sort out putting him onto the easy digest.
Hi ya this is not to do with milk but after reading your post it triggered a memory for me with my little one, she was diagnosed with silent reflux at the age of 5 wks, shes now 16 months, and still suffers a little.. Things did improve loads once she stopped having milk totally, which was at 5 months old, her chose she hated it and refused it. Now found shes dairy intolerant,,, any way I found that she would drink very small amounts of milk when tiny and become very uncomfortable and cry, even refluxing it out the mouth while i was tryin to feed her. When she was two months old through the problems the reflux caused she was put on Domperidone, this stuff helps empty the tummy quicker so they dont have to digest there food totally them self, meaning that the amount of acid they have in the tummy is less, so not as much to reflux up and with Ranitidine being an antacid tablet there is not a lot there. Found the stuff a great help, I also found due to the change in the weight the Ranitidine needs it's dose changing a lot, I always found it did not help my daughter, so it was changed to Omprazole, which apart from the liquid Gaviscon advanced is now the only meds she is on.
Just wondered if your little one may benefit from trying different meds.
Sorry its a long post.
Hi Thanks for the advice. I am seeing the peadiatric cons again in January so if things havent improved I will discuss it with them. Then health visitor has advised me to change onto comfort milk for now. He has had two feeds now and has taken just over 3 ounces both times. He seems a bit more content at the minute but its just a wait and see.
I agree with Belinda completely - I used aptimal easy digest for a while it helped but now we are on aptimal again as she is a little better but my LO never took more that 2-3oz in a feed and she did not have hardly any weight gain till we started on solids - I personally would say let her take her 2oz and then stop and they try again a couple of hours later and then as soon as you feel ready try solids it might help

Also my LO for some reason would take Hipp Organic bedtime milk and still takes a 7oz bottle of that at night - weird but she seems ok with that - no idea why??
I have tried my DS on the comfort milk but after a couple of sucks he screams the place down and refuses hismilk. Put him back onto Aptamil 1 and he takes it. Going to speak to HV tomorrow but think I will persevere with Apt 1 and see how his weight is as he is dropping his centiles.
HI

My twins are now 13mths, one has reflux since being in scbu stopped BF at 3 mths tried cow & gate/aptamil/nutramigen then was put on Neocate only thing he keeps down but have stopped all his med recently I dint feel they were helping, he has multiple allergies and oesphgatis seeing paed on 3rd dec for next step he has had xrays and bariums etc. anyway Neocate helps, I stopped BF twin 2 in july he started shwoing signs silent reflux, that worsened -tried SMA aptamil cow& gate infasoy goats milk full fat milk half fat milk (due to this age I tried the normal milk) went to dr 5 times told them what I thought he had, finally 2 weeks ago a different dr agreed switched him to enfamil he is no longer screaming and arching and refusing bottles. Hope this long reply helps .
It does help thanks. Spoke to HV today and she has suggested I try him on Carobel in his feeds instead of Gaviscon. Doctor has given prescription and asked me to get a stool sample from him to eliminate lactose intolerence. They have discussed giving me a milk on prescription after all these other tests have been done.
