Feeling like there is no end?! :(
Hi All,
New to this site and just looking for some advice, reassurance etc.
My son is 5 months old and at around 6 weeks old was diagnosed with reflux, he was breastfed for 7 weeks with formula top ups as he didnt feed off me for the first week properly due to jaundice, and this reduced my milk supply. Moved onto all formula (aptamil comfort) at 7 weeks. Since birth I've felt guilty and almost a failure for not exclusively breastfeeding as this is what I was determined on, I'm blaming myself for the reflux now! He was prescribed gaviscon but this did nothing, and because he is on the comfort milk they then advised not to use it anyway as the milk is already thicker.
At 4 months old he was taken to A&E as he was throwing up blood, and was admitted for the night & they diagnosed him with silent reflux. He was put on ranitidine & domperidone (0.4ml / 1.2ml) this had no affect whatsoever, so at his follow up appointment at 5 months they upped his doses to 0.5ml & 3ml. It has been a week and along with early weaning on advice from the doctor, there has still been no improvement. He sometimes keeps the food down but as soon as he has milk everything comes back up and I feel back at square 1!
He also has eczema, which is really bad under his chin and neck as this is where the majority of the sick goes. I mentioned if it could be a possible milk allergy at the hospital appointment, but he said that because the steroid cream had calmed the eczema on his stomach & back a bit, that it couldn't be a milk allergy. Now a few days later the eczema has come back worse all over his body again! So now I don't know whether it still could be a milk allergy. I'm just driving myself crazy searching online trying to find answers. I love my son to pieces but I find myself just feeling so down everyday because of the constant sick, the constant washing, the bad flare ups of eczema.
Does anybody have any thoughts on whether it does sound like a milk allergy? Is there something I can be asking the doctors to do? I even find myself wanting him to have the operation they rarely offer just to stop this all, but the doctor said only if he still has it at 18 months after trying everything else would they even consider it. Just feel like this is never going to end :(

Hi Tasha ah so sorry yes it's horrid feeling so helpless :( I will check the protopics 'clinical' name. 2 strengths 0.03% and 0.1% we have found the 0.03% is fine. You put it on all the patches and continue to do so even when it clears up. You can get the vests etc prescribed but may be worth investing in couple to 'try' cos I always find if you can go and say 'I've tried x y and z' and it really helps please prescribe some. I don't know if iit's any use but I have a tin of Nutramigen AA (Joe just wouldn't take to it cos he's mostly BF just needed for odd feed when working or after throwing up) it is pretty vile TBH but worth perservering if it helps. More than happy to post it to you, again to 'try'. Can't remember TBH when sickness reduced whether with omeprazole or something else. Becomes a bit of a blur doesn't it?! Glad he's keeping done food down. If it's a while til he's sick he will be gaining some nutrition. Yeah you're probably right re the dairy no point in adding something in right now which may make things worse. Keep in touch x

Thankyou, will try anything atm and yes I know what you mean some doctors seem reluctant to prescribe anything different till you've said it definately helps! Just checked the link you sent, not sure if the vests will be much use to me the sizes seem too big as my son is 5 months old. Yep it does become a blur, I find myself thinking was there ever a time where he didn't throw up?! He must be keeping nutrients down as he's never lost any weight which is why I think GP's etc don't take me too seriously, and say I'm just probably thinking its more than it is but if they spent one day with him they'd see how its pretty much constant from one feed to the next! Ahh thankyou that's very kind, I have a doctors appointment booked for today which I'm going to really push for them to try him on a trial of the milk so I'll keep in touch and let you know what they have said, if they still refuse it then that might be a real help to try it!

sounds like cows milk protein intolerance to me. I'd push for a trial of Neocate or Nutramigen AA (must be AA and not 1 or 2 as they still contain milk proteins). xx

My gut feeling is that he does have the milk intolerance :( i'll be pushing to get a trial asap to either fix this or at least rule it out! x

Just to add, the doctors at the hospital when he was admitted due to throwing up blood diagnosed him with silent reflux but since reading about it it seems thats when babies are not being sick? My son's main issue is that he is constantly sick! Confusing, definately booking yet another appointment with GP to try and get some needed answers :( x
