LittleRefluxers

Hi guys I just wanted a bit of advice about how often etc you guys are feeding your babies. With my 3 yr old I stuck with a 4 hourly routine and before she was 3 months old she slept through the night and this helped form the routine. For bed time I had a very clear bath, bottle and bed routine and did this every night. She too had reflux but her symptons were more that she was very sicky and didn't always drink a lot. With this baby who is currently 14 weeks I was feeding her every 3 hours because it was taking an hour to feed her. Her reflux symptons seem alot worse however and this seems to be affecting any kind of routine that I want to implement. This one cries alot when it comes to being fed and then when I get her started she doesn't drink alot. I would then leave it for a bit and try her again (within the hour allowed) most of the time she cries and screams again, sometimes she will take some more. Bedtimes seem to be a nightmare. Essentially I would like her and my older one to go to bed somewhere between 7-8pm, I have taken to bathing her in the morning because although she likes the bath she screams blue murder when getting out, so I have taken that bit out of my routine. However, because of how the feeding pans out during the day, which is all very random, its often only a few hours after her last bottle and therefore she not hungry enough to take anything or just a little for what should be her bedtime bottle. I can't really keep her up later because she seems to really need to go to bed at around this time. I don't know whether to try and wake her up at a certain time in morning and start with a 4 hourly routine like I did with my other one. I really seem to have much less confidence and knowledge this time around when it should be the other way round surely??? As I seem to be totally clueless I wonder if people could give me some advice. Tonight I have put her to bed without a bottle and plan to go up in a little bed and see if she will take a bottle whilst asleep. But again this takes away the next part of forming any kind of bedtime routine, but don't know if I am just getting too hung on on a routine, its just this has always worked well for my older child and was keen to continue this with the new one. So sorry for rambling...

Ha they always catch you out dont they. My first 2 girls went on a routine great- I followed the contented baby book routines but very very roughly as there was no way I was waking them up for a feed at 7am if they werent looking for it.
Anyway just as I thought this parenting malarky was easy I got baby no3 with silent reflux, a determined personality and a total aversion to daytime sleep. I have had to admit defeat and leave her to it. But in honesty its fine as she sleeps through nearly most nights and its so much easier just letting her eat when shes hungry and sleep when shes tired as it really is different with reflux babies, or maybe its just mine but she is erratic with eating and sleeping and cannot be cajoled if its not what she wants and you really need to do whats best for them, and they will let u know whats best for them not the other way round !! Sorry if this is not helpful but I have tried for 5 months to get into a routine and now that I have given up on that it is actually easier.
Hi Karen

my LO is now 5 months and have also attempted a 4 hourly textbook routine but reality is, as I quickly found out, that my baby is not a textbook baby and reflux babies are different, I think. I've decided to stop fighting it and feed 3 hourly during the day as that is what Max wants. Day time feeds for us are also difficult as Max very agitated and unhappy if put down on his mat or chair - and likes to be held. I was thinking it was cos he was used to being held cos we would need to hold / keep upright for reflux, but reading these threads it seems quite common in reflux babies with intolorances.

It must be difficult with two children, especially if the baby does not have a routine or follows a different routine to your other LO. All I can say is well done you as it is difficult enough with one!

I've been trying cranial osteopathy on my LO and the nights seem to have improved considerably. I highly recommend it.

I hope things start to get better. M

Don't know if it will help as I haven't received mine yet, but alot of the Mums on this site recommended The Sensational Baby Sleep Plan by Alison Scott-Wright as she deals with routines with babies with reflux - I'm eagerly waiting the arrival of mine as the Contented baby Riutine which worked fab with my toddler just doesn't deal with the reflux issues - I found a second-hand copy on Ebay, they also have new ones available. Hey - anything is worth a try isn't it? It;s hard with toddler too as your energy gets sapped away with lack of sleep - good luck

Hi
My little one is 6 months old on the 26th of this month. I found it very difficult to get him into a routine when he was younger.
I found it really awkward to get him to take his milk and he ended up sleeping in his car seat for about 2 months as this was the only way to settle him.
I have now got him on solids and his routine has greatly improved. He has his breakfast (weetabix with his milk) at around 8-9 in the morning. Dinner at 12-1 which is our food blended down with a fromage frais. Tea around 4-5 which is the same as dinner. Then at around half 9 he will take 4oz milk made into porridge and drink 2 oz milk. He then will sleep through til about 5 where he drinks 4oz milk.
I found that getting him onto solids was the best thing I ever did and it has got him into a routine (finally!) and his reflux is settling down. I weaned him at around 15 weeks following the advice of our consultant.
I found it really hard to get Ryan to take his milk and tried him with some baby rice at around 14 weeks and this seemed to settle him as well.
Hope this helps.
